2011 Donation Drive Starting Next Week

Those of you who have been with us here at GWJ for a few years know that this time of year brings about two occurrences. First, the annual donation drive where we come crawling humbly to your feet, wearing glasses and probably just pretending to be blind while we hold out a cup half full of change and shake it at you until you make a charitable deposit. The second is the annual giveaway in which goodjers, because that is what I finally must admit you have chosen to call yourselves, win fabulous prizes. And, this year will be no different.

Well, maybe a little bit different.

For a variety of reasons which mostly have to do with bureaucracies I don’t fully comprehend, we are compelled to divest these two events, which have been inextricably tied in the past. However, this doesn’t mean that in practice things are actually going to be very much different. We will be having our month long beginning donation drive next week. Shortly after that, and leading up to a drawing on International Goodjer Day, we will be announcing our giveaway prizes. While we are finishing up preparation, it will be fair to assume that rules will probably mirror previous years.

We wanted to be completely clear on this well ahead of time, so that those of you who have been a part of our donation drive in the past won’t be surprised when we don’t announce giveaways in tandem next week. Worry not, there will be prizes, there will be a new icon, there will be festivities and joy for all mankind, or at least those who have found our tiny corner of the web.

As always, we depend on all of you -- whether through financial support or simply your participation -- to help us continue to keep GWJ the phenomenal community and home on the web it has been for nearly a decade, and we are continually in your debt for the amazing support you all have shown year after year, day after day. Thanks, and we’ll have more information next week and in the immediate weeks to follow.

I have been waiting for my first change to donate. Hooray!

Aaaaaaaaaah, good times!

I can't wait to give you guys some money.

You know you are old (but awesome?) when podcast donations become items in your monthly budget.

there will be a new icon

I trust rampart speculation on unsuitable icons is in order?

Are you sure?

Weiner hat?

A golden bust of a Certis & Elysium love child?

The delay is so that they can figure out the appropriate legal channels to auction off Demiurge.

You know, Elysium, if you wanted to do it the old way, I think you could by running it as a raffle, rather than the donation + giveaway. I suspect someone has suggested that a giveaway that requires a purchase is not legal, and they're probably right.

But I _think_ raffles are completely legal. Might be worth checking. I'm not sure if you can have variable pricing on raffle tickets, though, so I'm not sure it could be precisely the same, where the first ticket was any donation up to $25, the second up to $50, and three tickets up to (or over) $75. You might be forced to sell tickets at a hard price, maybe $25 each, with a cap of three tickets per person. That would kinda suck for the impoverished, though.

I know raffles have to show up separately on IRS forms, but I don't even know what country the back office files in.

Absolutely not! :D

Sigh, someday.

I'm not a lawyer, and I also don't know what country or state GWJ lists as home base, but in Illinois, I know raffles usually require a gaming license from the county and sometimes the state. If the raffle brings in enough money or the prizes are valued high enough, there are IRS and state tax requirements for both the raffle operator and the winners.

I know nothing about this type of thing. But couldnt you just label the "money" part as a fund-raising donation event.

And then a month later run a contest that just so happens to coincide w/ the people who donated?

But to be honest Ely, I'm pretty sure the site would still get close to the same amount of donations w/out there being a "prize" contest.

I would still donate just as much as previous years if there was no prize portion of this event. We don't do it for the prizes

PAR

Dibs on par's prize if he wins! (I do it for the prizes. )

Spoiler:

Ask me how well that's been working out!

Well, I didnt say that if I DID win I wouldnt take the prize But if there were no prizes I think most of us would still donate the same.

There's not enough speculatin' in this thread:

A golden Vinnie
A golden heart
A pair of gold eyes (GoldenEye)
A gold Steam sale logo that would infringe on all sorts of copyrights and bankrupt the site
A golden parachute

I would like to submit my donation in the form of an interpretive dance. I can give some money, too, but would still like to show my sweet moves. Because they are sweet.

But are they as sweet as Cory's?

Probably. The bar was set very low. And that clip's never going away, is it? So long chances at public office. Well, there's always hope for a secretarial appointment.

Indeed, and seconded.

Heart of gold engine?

I have marked my calendar, my wallet is open and I was just paid on Friday. Yay for an icon, I won't forget to donate during the drive like last year.

I would like to see a Vinne with golden boxer gloves - like that awesome photoshopped image in the thread. Or some sort of Vinne photoshopped image recreation. a golden broom would work as well. (the weapon of choice for dog defence).

A golden heart would be pretty awesome.

Finally the weiner bomb shall be mine!

Weiner bomb is OP, needs nerf.

Let's see what do we have so far...
1. Key
2. Watch
3. Weinerbomb
4. Car
5. Cruise Ship
6. Jet
7. Companion Cube
8. Handcuffs

and Certis has a Pillow.

(I may have 5 & 6 switched, not sure.)

Golden Heart would be the best next one.

Tagging as a reminder to donate.

Posting to see what freaking Donation Icon I have.

An interesting side note: there are only 9 people who are still eligible to get the most current icon when it launches.

So in a few years it will be a golden Highlander Sword?
There can be only one!

There can be only one!

So this year, it should be rings?

And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern over each race. But they were all of them deceived...

Or maybe, they're just the fellowship and should get golden lambas bread if one fails to make it to donation.

When do they roll out the golden 2600 joystick?
