Normally E3 week means no new releases. Even in the years when E3 seemed like barely a whisper in the wind, the industry still seemed to memorialize the occasion by not putting new product on the shelves, but this year is strangely different. It's not necessarily a week of gangbusters, but if you were to look at it without context you'd be hard pressed to realize that anything out of the ordinary is going on the week of June 6th.
If you would have asked me a couple of weeks ago what the Game of the Week was going to be for me, I'd have said Red Faction pretty definitively. Oh what a few pre-release reviews can do to temper a boy's enthusiasm. Across the board, buzz for RF: Armageddon has been decidedly tepid, and in some cases much, much worse. That's intensely disappointing, as I think Red Faction: Guerrilla was one of the standout games of 2009, and by all accounts developer Volition has taken all those fun subroutines and completely forgotten to install them in the new version. Disappointing.
Which leaves inFamous II, and it's oddly placed capitalization left to pick up the pieces. That's not enthusiasm, friends, that's a Game of the Week by default. inFamous was never a favorite of mine in the first place, and the idea of a sequel that, as far as I can tell, doesn't really bring anything new to the table is not one that get's my wallet all a dither. Still, at least it looks like Sucker Punch didn't lobotomize what worked out of their game, and for this E3 week that's going to have to be good enough.
