June 6 - June 10

Normally E3 week means no new releases. Even in the years when E3 seemed like barely a whisper in the wind, the industry still seemed to memorialize the occasion by not putting new product on the shelves, but this year is strangely different. It's not necessarily a week of gangbusters, but if you were to look at it without context you'd be hard pressed to realize that anything out of the ordinary is going on the week of June 6th.

If you would have asked me a couple of weeks ago what the Game of the Week was going to be for me, I'd have said Red Faction pretty definitively. Oh what a few pre-release reviews can do to temper a boy's enthusiasm. Across the board, buzz for RF: Armageddon has been decidedly tepid, and in some cases much, much worse. That's intensely disappointing, as I think Red Faction: Guerrilla was one of the standout games of 2009, and by all accounts developer Volition has taken all those fun subroutines and completely forgotten to install them in the new version. Disappointing.

Which leaves inFamous II, and it's oddly placed capitalization left to pick up the pieces. That's not enthusiasm, friends, that's a Game of the Week by default. inFamous was never a favorite of mine in the first place, and the idea of a sequel that, as far as I can tell, doesn't really bring anything new to the table is not one that get's my wallet all a dither. Still, at least it looks like Sucker Punch didn't lobotomize what worked out of their game, and for this E3 week that's going to have to be good enough.

Sadly the single review I've seen and forum chatter about Operation Flashpoint: Red River haven't been favorable. I had been looking forward to it and Red Faction, but now I think I'll hold off on both for a while.

agreed, Sean. inFamous, although solid in all respects for the type of game that it was, just never got its hooks in me. I'm gonna pass on the sequel pretty easily.

I played through infamous almost 3 times; can't wait for this one.

I wish Green Lantern would actually be a good game.

I have actually really been looking forward to inFamous 2. The first is one of my favorite PS3 games and I'm hopeful this one will be really good as well.

Of course, what I'm really looking forward to late this year is Uncharted 3.

The 1up review for Red Faction was pretty positive, and I really enjoyed the demo. I'm just playing the first Infamous now that the Welcome Back program has been unrolled, and am enjoying it, just as I enjoyed the Infamous 2 demo a few days ago, but shooting lightning at dudes isn't as entertaining to me as using magnets to smash giant alien bugs with walls.

Yeah, last year's E3, June 14 - 17, had a sweet launch lineup involving Toy Story 3, Death Track: Resurrection, and Flips: Silent But Deadly (?).

Wish I cared more about Operation Flashpoint: Red River. The presentation of wide-open maps on Dragon Rising wasn't a baldfaced lie, I wouldn't say that, but they still played out with greater linearity than the 120 square miles would lead you to believe.

I was interested in Red Faction: Armageddon as a "maybe later" title, but after playing the demo I just can't do it. The game could have been pretty solid, as there's a lot there to like. Unfortunately, fighting those bug creatures isn't really one of them. There's something about their A.I. that prevents them from being any fun to fight.

I can't rationally explain what it is, but if I'm not having fun then, well, I'm not having fun.

Man I've been way excited for Infamous 2 for quite some time now. Looking forward to 5 o'clock. Sorry to hear there's love lacking for it over here.

I'm super excited to play Infamous 2, I don't understand the lack of love here. I thought the first one was a great time. That said, I haven't seen any good deals on it and I can't get myself to spend $60 on a game any more. When it's easily had for $40, it's mine.

+1

If they could find a somewhat creative developer, it could be an awesome adventure game.
