February 7 - February 11

I think of this week as an exploration in skeptical nostalgia. Between the rebirth of a Dungeon Keeper style game and the rejuvenation of the nearly 15 year old trivia series You Don't Know Jack, it's quite a gaming week for someone stuck in the past like myself. Enthusiastic as I am, however, at experiencing an all new Jack Attack, I can't help but be a little worried that Jellyvision can come out of a years-long hiatus and jump right back into the mix.

My attention this week is instead more firmly focused on the PC title Dungeons, which offers the mirthfully evil and long absent opportunity to do malice by building a dungeon to lure hapless doers of good. Sprinkle in some intriguing RPG elements and some direct combat skills, and I find myself helplessly hopeful that this will at least be a shadow of the fun I once had with Bullfrog's classic.

I do find it curious that developer Kalypso has consistently downplayed the Dungeon Keeper comparisons to this game. While I appreciate the interest in putting one's own stamp on a game, it's not exactly like Dungeon Keeper is a game you necessarily need to be trying to run away from. Hell, if they'd come out and said, "we basically ripped off DK in every way we could think of," I'd probably be more likely to rush out and pick this up. Don't tell me it's more like Theme Park than Dungeon Keeper; I don't want to hear that.

Anyway, as for the week overall, toss in Mario Sports Mix on the Wii, some Test Drive Unlimited 2 action and a Tecmo Koei JRPG from across the ocean on the PS3 and you have a somewhat niche-y but potentially decent week for gaming. Could be a lot worse for Mid-February.

I may have ripped on Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll because of its name, but the art style is pretty unique. Looks like they took some cues from Valkyria Chronicles and then did their own thing.

I recommend everyone interested in YDKJ look at the console version even though the PC version is $10 cheaper. Everyone being able to have their own controller, on a couch, instead of sharing the keyboard around the computer is a big benifit to the new launch. Granted, there's many more ways (setups) we play PC games today than in the 90s, but this really has the makings of a great console/party game. I'm encouraged to see DLC is going to come, I can only hope they release a TON of question sets. It won't take long to burn through the inital 75.

Yeah, I'm one of the first to complain when a game doesn't get a PC port, but a trivia game makes zero sense.

Just ordered a copy of YDKJ (along with an extra 360 controller for the wife) from Amazon.

Can't wait to dive in!

Okay, let's organize some MP YDKJ games!!

I was able to snag a copy from the local gamestop over my lunch. They had 1 copy - only 1! They said they order based on pre-orders, and 0 pre-orders means 1 copy I guess. I hate gamestop, but I wanted it today.

I also picked up the Scene-it bundle from Amazon with 4 controllers (which do work with the game, they're even mentioned in the manual) for 24.77 - much cheaper than 2x xbox controllers (I already have 2).

That is easily one of the greatest gamer tags ever.

Wait, YDKJ has online play? Interest revived. I take it's not possible to do mixed local/online?

That is a question I would like answered as well as my wife would be down to do this and go online for a full 4.

I looked through the options last night and it did not appear you could mix online and offline players.
