December 6 - December 10

It's hard not to get too inside baseball about why World of WarCraft: Cataclysm is the game of the week. I mean, on the one hand, duh! I'm picking and there's a new WoW expansion -- if you're surprised then either you're new to the site or you aren't paying attention. Beyond that, however, the reboot of the old world, the addition of a half dozen new instances, 2 new races, new starting zones, new class/race mixtures, new raids, 1000s of new quests, new guild leveling, new professions, level cap increase, and countless little tweaks make for a new recipe for WoW crack.

That said, Cataclysm probably isn't the item on the list this week that will make the most money long term. No, that accolade likely belongs to Bejeweled 3. In addition, Tron: Evolution is a game that caught my attention at PAX and looks to at least be worth a rental. Toss Super Mario Bros. All Stars into the mix for some classic platformer action, and you've got a deceptively strong week of releases set.

- Bejeweled 3

I'm going to make a Worgen Catfinder.

Whew. Another breather week.

Bejeweled 3? We're just gonna pass over that? This is gonna be a horrible week for productivity with the WoW players going through Cataclysm and everyone else playing Bejeweled 3...

Everyone just close up shop...the economy is over...life as we know it is done.

And they say PC gaming is dead...

Hmm. I just ordered a copy of Batman Arkham Asylum, now I finally have a PC capable of running it.. And I'm all but done with MGS4, and around a third of the way into Deus Ex.

I love school holidays, I finally get to catch up on back catalogue.

GOG.com has my holiday season fulfilled (pretty much); replaying the Black Isle back catalog (complete Icewind Dale, complete Baldur's Gate) alongside Neverwinter Nights 1 (want to play the expansions).

Wanted to know if anyone knows if Neverwinter Nights ever got a graphical update by the community, like the old Black Isle games (HD res, better textures, etc.)

Haha. That girl took down here "Cata-ca-lysm" video. I was gonna post that.

I'm not too terribly hyped for Cataclysm since I re-upped my account a few weeks ago and they've already more or less put in a lot of the stuff from expansion. Or so I think. All the starting area missions and whatnot are tweaked, which is great because while there are still a TON of fetch and 10x missions, there's still some more interesting ones thrown in ... which I believe Certis mentioned on the podcast.

Screw that. Yogi Bear all the way!

It's been a wonderful fall/winter season for catching up on the back catalog. I haven't picked up a single new game due to the overall boring nature of the release schedule, and this week is no exception. Loving it.

January/February, on the other hand, are shaping up to be killer.

Ooh! I want financial security and peace!

Bejeweled 3?? How did I not know about this before?

You speak truth. Between Cataclysm and Bejeweled 3 - I expect to do very little work. I'm so glad Christmas is coming up so I will have time to play both!

Because you don't follow Jeff Green on Twitter, which is required by all humans.

Bah, come away from "the darkness" and step into the light; EVE Online's Incursions has started. ;p

Guys, you're killing me here. Stop replying to spam, once it's removed your post is useless filler -- like everything Quintin_Stone writes.*

You should see if her Black Ops one is still up. Look for the word "though".

Make sure to check out the Alliance questlines in Southern Barrens and Thousand Needles - flippin' brilliant little set of quests. Who cares about stupid flying mounts when you can have your own gnomish steamboat

They even managed to make Stranglethorn Vale interesting to quest through. Stranglethorn Vale.

Spoiler:

Don't worry lil' raptor dude, ima comin' to rescue you soon enough!

Best innovation so far though - not having to return to a questgiver for certain quests - e.g the Nesinwary(sp?) expedition quests in the aformentioned Vale or a lot of the stuff in westfall.

Okaaay, I'll stop it.

It's hard to resist though.

I weep at the thought of the lost comedic opportunities.

Your pain is delicious.

$20 for Bejeweled 3 though? Seems a bit steep to me... Maybe I'm just spoiled with Steam sales though.

$20 is the price point on all of PopCap's games. It's worked for them so far.

$20 I used to think was a great price for games but steam sales have definitely obliterated that.

Guys. I haven't played World of Warcraft since '04. If I hop back in this week, should I start with vanilla WoW, or say screw it and head straight into the Cataclysm?

Well, the 1-60 game will be exactly the same for vanilla and cataclysm except that with vanilla you won't have access to:

-draenei and blood elf races (need BC for that)
-death knight class (need wotlk for that)
-worgen and golbin races (need cataclysm for that)

The pre-60 leveling zones will be identical even with just a vanilla subscription, except that you won't have access to the starting zones for the races listed above.

The other restriction will be that you won't have access to the professions added since vanilla, including jewelcrafting, inscription and archeology, though you will still be able to use gems and glyphs created by people who have those professions.

And of course you won't be able to level past 60 or venture into any 61+ zones without the appropriate expansion.

So, if you just want to dip your toes back into the world and don't care about the features listed above, you'll be fine sticking with a vanilla subscription for the time being.

Okay, there can be no more talk of WoW: Cataclysm. It's already like a needle of heroin hovering just over my vein.

Launches tomorrow. Join millions of people for what may be the single largest game release of all time.

Who needs games? I decided to buy new computer speakers instead. ...pause... Of course I bet WoW would sound even better. Dang, there goes that coping strategy!

Had Blizzard bothered to update (improve) animations, especially the combat animations I would probably be interested. I guess I got spoiled by LOTRO graphics and animations.

On this we can agree.

So, is this like a Fight Club? Everyone is in, but nobody speaks of it?

I'm trying to innoculate myself with some Dragon Age, but it's not working dammit.
