A sprinkling of solid game releases headline yet another relatively well populated week. For those of you not drowning under the digital joys of Seattle's PAX convention, there's fun to be had by RPG fans, sports fans and fans of things that go boom.

While those who payed the extra scratch for the Madden Collector's Edition have been enjoying the latest version of Head Coach for several weeks, now the rest of us have the opportunity to see what the surprising fuss has been about. 360 owners also get to enjoy Infinite Undiscovery from Square Enix, Rare's Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise and Warhmmer Battle March.

But our Game of the Week, available on the PC, 360, PS3 and even PS2, is a game that you can actually go to the store today and pick up, and having done so myself I'm inclined to recommend you do just that. Mercenaries 2: World in Flame is not sophisticated, not necessarily the best looking game on the planet, not even particularly deep, but for fans of carnage, explosions, chaos and devastation, this may be the game you're looking for.

I'll be picking up Infinite Undiscovery for sure. But I need to finish Lost Odyssey first.

Hmm. I need to find 120 dollars to get both Infinite Undiscovery and Tales of Vesperia... and THEN I need to actually beat Lost Odyssey.

Was gonna pick up Facebreakers, but the demo saved me that scratch. Looks like a money saving week!

I picked up Mercs 2. Now its just a question of finding time to play.

Spore on Sunday!

It's sounding like Infinite Undiscovery going to be a rental for me. The feedback from reviewers so far as indicated that it might not be a keeper, but I've been hungry enough for another JRPG to at least give it a look.

I saw the ad for Facebreakers, and it actually looked like a bad version of Ready 2 Rumble. I need to wake up after a nice long day at work to go fetch Mercs 2.

Has it been announce whether or not Spore would be available to purchase through digital means? Preferably something other than EA's download service?

Oh god, yes! That's the exact thing I thought when I saw preview shots. "Oh cool, a current-next-gen version of R2R!".

You'll be able to get it from Direct2Drive - which lets you redownload as much as you want, and as one of the major digital distributors to rival steam doesn't look like it's going anywhere. I got mass effect from D2D and was content.

Do I apply it directly to the forehead?

Mercs 2 coming from GameFly.

SOCOM: Confrontation beta starts on the 5th, and runs through to October 5th (leaving a small window of 9 days to go through withdrawals before the game hits).

It's not even a bad version of Ready 2 Rumble. R2R at least sorta tried to be a "boxing" game. Facebreaker is a plain ol' button mashing fighting game. Y-A-doubleU-N.

I don't know how I missed this the first time I read this thread.

Getting Warhammer: Battle March this week.

I impulsively buy everything that is related to Games Workshop. The last (and best one) was WH40k Squad Command for PSP (also available on DS). It is an absolutely great game that got so-so reviews when it came out. I didn't even know anything about it. I saw it on shelves and impulse bought it. Best tactical game in the wh40k universe ever made.

I already got Mark of Chaos but I don't mind. Battle March will play differently and I prefer console versions.

my girlfriend is picking up Infinite Undiscovery.

nice week

I really need to parse out the online games that are more time-sensitive purchases for this fall. I feel like Mercs 2 might be part of that list.

Also, I fear that I'll lose track of all the great single-player games I'll need to come back for. I still have games from last year that I need to pick up eventually (Witcher and CoD4, probably others).

Being a gamer is hard work!

Mercs 2 is a GameFly rental for me, already on its way.

Ok, I did something I normally don't do and bought Mercs 2 on launch day.

Uh, how the hell does this run on the PS2? What kind of game crippling compromises did they have to pull and why even bother at this point? Yes, I know, install base yadda yadda yadda. If they could do a PS2 port they could have scored a major win with a Wii port.

Anyway, loving it so far. Not so happy with some of the changes (Quick-Time Events? Are you [censored for the children] kiddin' me?) but it's still good old Mercs at heart.

I have Merc2 PS3 as a rental right now. The game is riddled with bugs, but the game itself is a blast. I am thinking of buying it, but I am not sure if I should go PC or PS3. If the PC version is full of bugs too, I will probably go PS3, but I wanted to check with everyone to see.
