The Sword of Damocles

The time has finally come. No more safety net, no take backs. Welcome to the new Gamers With Jobs! There's still some question of whether or not the site will crumple under its own weight once more traffic starts streaming in, but so far it's been ticking along pretty well. Despite the sword dangling over our collective heads, I'd say we're optimistic.

We are experiencing sporadic bouts of sluggishness when loading pages, but Jeff is working hard to nail down any lingering speed bumps. If you spot any major problems or anything that might help us optimize the site, do let us know! Also note that it may take a day or two for gamerswithjobs.com to move over to the new server space. Until that happens, some images (like the Conference Call and articles) may not appear on the site.

Comments

I think I've fixed the remaining issues with the podcast feed and the sidebar active forum topics not updating. Let me know if you see these happening any more.

Overall, I like it. Only niggles are the original post appearing at the top of every forum page (meaning I have to scroll down to get to the posts on every page), and for some reason the page doesn't resize properly into my browser (FF 2.0), which means I have to scroll right a bit to not have the posts cut off.

Beyond that, very nice. I like the cleaner look.

I am noticing in Firefox 2.0 that when I click on a thread for new posts the thread doesn't open up at the new post but usually several posts above it.

My only suggestion would be to move the logout button to perhaps the immediate right of your account name, as opposed to in the list of options below it. I find I accidentally click on logout instead of recent posts (a commonly accessed link for me) far too many times.

Of course I manage to say this NOW as opposed to when you were building the site, so feel free to ignore me for being tardy. I'm content with the design as it is.

I believe the "recent posts" (tracker) should be behaving correctly now.

Goodjerific.

Nice job, guys, looks great!

Ever since the url for GWJ started working for me my browser (Firefox 2.0) has been behaving properly when I click on a thread with new posts. I am immediately brought to the new posts. Unfortunately I can't remember if that was because of a work around someone showed me within Firefox to get that working properly or if it's just working properly for other reasons.

Thanks. The tracker is pretty much exclusively how I read the forums, and I doubt I'm alone.

you all SUCK! this website SUCKS. go to hell.

i made a whole new account, filled out allll these forms to tell you that! imagine the size of my nerd rage!...now imagine it BIGGER!

no...

no,i'm joking... i love everyone, that's not why i made the account. This spiffy new look to GWJ made me want to join the cult. good job guys! yay!

...so... what do i do now?... ::looks around with bright crazy eyes, wanders off mumbling... somethings not right with this one, is this the future of our precious community?...maybe the shiny new site will only bring on doom!::

Nobody move. It has very poor eyesight and can only see you if you're moving. Try not to breathe until it's moved on.

Looks good. I do miss not having links at the bottom of the page tho'. Now have to go all the way back to the top to pick 'forums' to go to another.

It's below the comment box. Some weird formatting thing is making it hard to bump the links above it like normal.

where? who said that?! i can hear you man, i can hear the mouth-breathing

The brighter shades of red are annoying. What's up with that giant black space on top of the page, and why isn't the recent topic list bolded like it used to be ? All the fonts sizes/settings and, for the lack of a better word, spacings, look... off.

This design is still in beta stage, I assume.

I like the added splash of color, and it's orange not red. (maybe your colors are off on the monitor?)

That giant black space is where the add would appear if you weren't blocking it.

I think the fonts and sizes are nice. Easy to read and clean.

Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?

I like it, good job guys.

Oh yeah, good point about the ad - I see it now. Since the side ads were showing, I forgot that the AdBlock was enabled for this site as well.

As for the rest - I am not obliged to lie about my impressions, Gaald, even if that angers you personally.

P.S. I suspect a lot of my problems arise from the fact that Cleartype makes a lot of fonts look radically thinner/thicker (depending), and the site is clearly optimized toward LCD screens of 1280x1024 and higher with Cleartype now...

Sorry I'm late.

The new site is sexy! French-Canadian sexy!

Much better than the old one. Good work!

They're matched to the same settings the old site had. Interesting.

But yes, we'll still be tweaking things here and there as we go. It's a website, not a stone tablet

Go Banana! Site's looking good so far.

You mean I can put away my "Engraving 0s and 1s for Dummies" book?

Small bug I found.
On *one* forum page - http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/3...
When you scroll to the bottom (or top), the usual tree ( Home > Forums > Games and Platforms ) is only showing "Home" for me.

I am on XP, and Firefox 2.0.0.12

There are some threads where the sidebar only allows a few characters per line, consequently the Popular Forum Threads and Steam Community Events gets spread out vertically. Mostly noticed this at work computers that have internet explorer 6, win xp.

a) I love having the podcast streamable off the front page. Great jeorb!

b) There's seems to be a sporadic weirdness with shift+i opening an italics tag in Firefox. I haven't been able to reliably reproduce it (though I haven't really worked at it), but I've seen it multiple times on two different machines.

Is it me, or do the ads seem way bigger than they used to? The animations seem way more intrusive, particularly since animated flash ads are simultaneously moving at the left and top of the page.

Just noticed that you can lengthen the Comment space when making longer posts. Very nice addition. It makes editing a lot easier.

If you're using Firefox, grab the Stylish extension, install it, then look in the lower left corner of the window for the thing that looks like a paint brush over paper. Click it and select "Find Styles for this Page". You should find at least one, "Sear Eyes Less" (the original color causes me pain), that tones down the red/orange/whatever and makes the signatures a bit more recognizable as signatures (and smaller). And, if you don't like it you can adjust it from there, too.
