Sometimes, it's as though the Nintendo Wii is operating in a completely different industry than the one with which I am familiar. Not a week goes by that some bizarre game which I've never even heard of is summarily launched onto the inscrutable machine to, what I assume, is some kind of retail success. In a way, which I admit isn't entirely negative, the generic nature of the Wii library is almost reminiscent of the bygone NES days, and I wonder, as I so often do, whether Nintendo is operating from a position of almost prescient genius or resolute stubbornness.

Either way, I suppose some credit should be paid Nintendo for managing to get anything out this week, or apparently this month for that matter. The sudden drought continues and should extend into the foreseeable future, though PS3 gamers get something of a treat this week with Valve's The Orange Box finally making its way onto the languishing system. For those of you with a PS3 and no 360 or PC, this is one of those easy must-buys that trump other lesser priorities like food and shelter. Sell your blood if you have to. Sell your friend's blood if you have to. Just find a way to treat yourself to this week's Game of the Week.

On DVD this week, People Magazine's Sexiest Man of the Year, Matt Damon, does a lot of very actiony things while apparently being filmed by Michael J. Fox in The Bourne Ultimatum. I know, a Parkinson's joke may not be in the best of taste, but seriously, Paul Greengrass needs to stop shaking that camera so much! More DVDs here.

Comments

Now I realize why the Week Ahead today was so late. The list is downright depressing.

Not that I'm even close to through the backlog of games I've yet to finish.

Isn't UT3 coming out this week for PS3?

There's an equestrian game out recently for the Wii called, 'My Horse and Me'. It has the approval of the International Equestrian Federation. There is only one review I've found on it and it's favorable and looks interesting (12/05)

And this week's "Low Blow" award goes to...Sean Sands!

Bourne Ultimatum on HD-DVD.

Thank god there's no more games (that matter) for at least a short while.

Go PS2! Keep getting releases you plucky, can-do console!

I agree with you about the book and I'm sorry in advance.

Still. Its true. Great films anyway, but there's a limit, Mr. Greengrass. A limit.

I actually enjoyed the first Super Swing Golf. I'll be checking out Season 2 eventually.

I seem to remember some goodjers calling for sanctions/bans (in a forum?) against me for saying Michael J Fox should have been the new James Bond. Glad to see you've adapted a mutation to your senses of humor since then!

That, or those people are unlikely to suggest I ban myself.

You should ban yourself for a bit. Take a nice Christmas vacation. Tell you what, I'll step in for you. You know, write a bit, run my mouth on the podcast. And I promise, when you return, you won't find me sitting on a throne of unused PS3 consoles, being fed peeled grapes by comely gaming wenches, while my enemies are forced to play Godzilla: Unleashed so that I may be amused by their cries of anguish. There would be no hint of EA corporate honchos working in salt mines to pay for my magnificent PC gaming rig, and neither Rabbit nor Nyles will be issuing daily written homages to the magnificence of the new Gaming King who has, through sheer strength of will, reconstituted Black Isle, Looking Glass, and other titans of gaming studios.

So...nothing to worry about. You can just IM me the admin password.

Alas, Coldstream, we hardly knew ye.

What? No!

I wonder what the online amount of people playing Orange box PS3 will be? If anyone buys it and wants to report, please do. I sort of sense a failure, but it might be the haterade speaking.
