August 28 - September 1

It may have occured to some of you that as I choose the Game of the Week, I have some sort of bias against RPGs sent our way across the great and mighty Pacific. You're not wrong. But, I will give a nod to a couple of titles landing on the PS2 that, I am told, are releases of some import to a segment of people with whom I apparently have very little in common. Those titles are Disgaea 2 and Xenosaga 3. I'm sure there will be much saving the world, oddly colored hair, and humans with animal appendages. Have fun boys.

Meanwhile, our Game of the Week only recently became a title I was remotely interested in. For some time now, Saint's Row has seemed like nothing more than a Grand Theft Auto clone, and that still largely holds true, but the initial buzz on the title is surprisingly positive. With the hope that the prerelease critical praise is well deserved, Saint's Row gets our Game of the Week.

Enchanted Arms for me!

Sigh... now if only I could get my console back from MS.

Enchanted Arms and Disgaea 2. Good times

I'm so getting Enchanted Arms and Saint's Row. Like others, I couldn't care less about Saint's Row when I heard about it but now that stellar reviews are pouring in I can't help but try it out.

I'll have to check out enchanted arms to see what that is about.

Disgaea should've gotten game of the week.

Enchanted Arms is one of only a few games that are pushing me to bite the financial hit and grab a 360.

I want to pick up Enchanted Arms... but I just can't encourage this "new games cost $60" trend.

FYI for anyone looking at Birth of America, Robear started a great thread about it a while back.

I wish I had the time for this one...

I just want to bring up again that Birth of America is a great sim on the American Revolutionary War and French & Indian War. Great AI, very good UI and a great team that is available to talk over ideas, problems etc. Very much in the same vain as the folks at Mad Minute Games (with their great game,' Take Command: 2nd Manassas.). Very nice strategic game with a beautiful map and lot's of statistics to look at if you want.

Saint's Row keeps our advertising overlords happy! *runs*

Anyone heard anything about Pro Stroke Golf. I guess it is a startup franchise that is trying to make a true simulation. Being a golf junkie, I am keeping an eye on this one.

Enchanted Arms looks awful, but that could be my aversion to JRPG's talking. Before dropping the cash, I encourage you guys to download a few game videos to make sure it's the game for you. All quicktime files.

I didn't even make the connection until you posted that. Where's my money hat?!

Eh... it's a start.

If there was just one Colonial/Civil war game you could play, what would it be? These games all look great, but I doubt that I would play more than one.

There. Fixed it.

JRPGs - meh. Japanese teenage angst dramas don't seem as compelling in my 30s as they did in college. Then again, neither does american teenage angst.

I'm so out of touch, I didn't even know that Enchanted Arms was a JRPG. I'll have to take a closer look as the suck factor probability grew a few percent.

Depends on your interest/mood. BoA is strategic, whereas TC2M is tactical. I suggest you check out the forums and read a bit on both. Both have AAR's thread's and you can check out discussion threads too. MMG's has link's to reviews too, but the best one's are in the discussion section of both by folks who are playing it.

[mod edit] What the holy hell was that? I need an explanation. NOW![edit]

Wow... Just. Wow.

Christ, Stylez, what the hell were you thinking?

Seriously, get rid of that picture.

Stylez, you need to PM me immediately with what image you think you were posting. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming the site was punishing you for hotlinking. That better be exactly what happened.

Holy christ dude! Please tell me that's not what you were trying to actually post!

edit to Ely: no trust me you dont want wang in your face! Especially in the middle of a computer lab...

This is what happens when you hotlink to images on someone's server. You think you're getting an animated gif of a scene from Baseketball, and everyone else sees a horribly obscene pic of something unnatural. And you don't realize it because your browser cache.

I don't have a problem with "don't steal bandwidth, jerk!" pics if they're funny or embarassing. That one is way the f*ck over the line.

Edit: For the record, I went to the URL folder of the image he was trying to link and got it to come up. That pic that showed up wasn't the one he was trying for.

It's not just your aversion to JRPGs. By all accounts on both sides of the pacific, the game is awful (as I have dutifully pointed out every time someone has made the mistake of expressing interest in it :D). If you want a JRPG this, pull out your PS2 and take your pick between Xenosaga 3 and Disgaea 2.

Personally, I'll be playing Xenosaga this week. I <3 Xenosaga, even if it is largely because of its tenuous connections to my beloved Xenogears. I'll also be picking up Disgaea eventually, but confusing mish-mashes of German philosopy/psychology and Judeo-Christian mythology apparently are nearer to my heart than quirky tales of the rulers of the underworld. Go figure.

As for Saint's Row, looks like a perfect Gamefly rental to me.

Holy crap. I'm really sorry folks. I assumed the people I was linking from would at least have the tastefulness to pull the picture.

Again. So very sorry.

If you got wang then you got lucky. I got a guy who has half of his face missing.

Oh jesus, I'm so sorry.

They probably just link to random Ogrish crap. I assure you my intended picture was a much more lighthearted gesture...

Yeah, well I got a collage of piercings, wounds, and amputations.

It didn't seem like the sort of thing you'd post, Stylez

That sounds oddly appropriate for a Japanese video game.

Yeah, WTF with giving a gangsta' game the nod over Disgaea? Disgaea 2's been getting very similar scores, in the 90's. Where's the justice? I demand justice! A TEST! I also demand a test!
