March 13th - March 18th

I have a PSP. This is a piece of information that I regularly forget. I realize there are people that play their PSP with great regularity, watch movies upon it, browse the interhypermeganet through its wireless features, and even run classic emulation upon their system. There are people, a great many I'm sure, that find their PSP the height of portable gaming goodness, but mine rots away in an upstairs drawer with a copy of Hot Shots that I played for a few hours last year. I've been waiting for a game that isn't based on vehicular theft to make me pull that sleepy, techinically impressive system out of its quiet refuge, and back into my hands. This week's Game of the Week is getting the kind of reviews and buzz that make me think that maybe, just maybe, it's time to give my PSP a little love.

Meanwhile, on the DVD front, we see the release of Good Night and Good Luck, a film written and directed by George Clooney who, as it turns out, is not only the object of lust for many women, but a talented actor, writer, director. The fierce intensity of my jealousy knows no limits, and I wish the man a special brand of ill-will. Nonetheless, good movie that one. Here's the rest of this week's releases.

Subsitence! Time for some non-Splinter Cell stealth online.

And, for the first time, some *gasp* 3rd-person non-fixed camera view MSG action!

I'm tempted to rent the new Onimusha title--I'm curious about anything with Keiji Inafune's name on it, at this point--except I don't know if I can get past the main character's crown of horns. Or whatever it is. What's up with that?

The Outfit will definitely get rented at some point.

Online?! Co-Op? How can that be?

Go forth and look for videos and reading of it!

The Outfit comes out this week and the GOTW is Daxter? It's official, Elysium has been bought.

Not really, judging from the Outfit demo... the game is fun but nowhere worth $60!

[edit] Oh,... and Oblivion is next week!

Nei's dead on. The Outfit looks, ok-ish, but it's not even something I'm going to rush out and rent.

Also, Sony sent me an envelope with a stack of untraceable, unmarked, non-sequential bills.

Warning: this tactic will only work once online per opponent.

Hmm, although I love me some MGS, I never really got my PS2 setup for online action and I already own a copy of MGS3. Looks like GRAW will have my undivided attention until the end of the week when my rental of The Outfit shows up... and probably even then, since it seems as though most people aren't terribly interested in that one.

The Outfit got 8.5 from OXM.

+ Multiplayer modes up the yay-hoo.
- Jeeps handle more like tanks.
? Will a sequal that works the little kinks out be made? We hope so.

I don't think that it's a good sign when they need a sequal just to play what the original should of executed.

By the way Oblivion got 9.5!

Portable devices are only good if you are portable yourself! I too haven't dusted off the PSP (or the DS) for quite a while, but I tell ya, when the situation arises where you're bored and waiting for a good chunk of time, they are great to have.

I downloaded The Outfit on the weekend and I found it no where near as bad as others have made it out. I had a lot of fun with it, and I really dug the tongue in cheek and comic like presentation. It's not super pretty, but the gameplay compensated for that.

I am absolutely sold on The Outfit after the demo. Finally a console action game with some strategic depth.

How does it compare to Freedom Fighters? I loved that game.

It plays a lot like freedom fighters, only you get to buy all kinds of crazy crap while you fight.

'Come on, next week' is what I'm thinking.

Damn, you didn't even offer me hush money. You're new at this whole 'marketing shill' game aren't you?

The PSP Daxter demo was pretty decent and Syphon Filter IGN is claiming to be a "system maker" type of game.

I suppose i'll be the only person here (and mostly a lurker at that) that is cheering for the release of Midnight Club 3 Remix? MC3 was the best racing game of last year I believe, PGR3 not withstanding. Just do the math guys, MC3 + More Stuff + $20 pricetag = WIN.

I got Syphon Filter: DARK MIЯЯOR and I must say this game seems to work a lot better than Splinter Cell DS.

The controls are more intuitive, the "shoot from behind a corner" feature is priceless, and the framerate doesn't go to sh*t when using the cool vision modes.

I haven't finished all the tutorials yet, but the weapons tutorial made me feel like I'm inside an episode of Family Guy. I just kept bursting into laughter.

guidewoman: "Ok, let's try the gun. Come up to the recruit and try it.".
hapless recruit: "Oh... no !! Not the paintball gun !!"
you: "don't worry, it won't be that bad"
(you shoot the recruit several times, he keeps going "Ow ! That hurts !" and eventually he falls down)

guidewoman: "Ok, let's try the hand-to-hand combat. Come up to the recruit and try it.".
same hapless recruit: "Oh... no !! Not the kicks and punches and stuff !!"
you: "don't worry, it won't be that bad"
(you come up to the recruit and BREAK HIS NECK. his body drops to the floor)

guidewoman: "Ok, let's try the electrical zappy thing. Make sure to hold the trigger after it connects to the target."
same hapless recruit: "Oh... no !! Not that thing !!!"
you: "oh you'll be just fine"
(you zap the recruit and keep holding the trigger. The recruit keeps making agonizing screams. Then he BURSTS INTO FLAMES, screaming "It burns ! It burns !", and falls down, charred)
