Unintentionally Decaffeinated

Section:

Today's comic isn't so much about games as it is about my process of drawing comics. Artists, writers, and probably any creative types have muses who inspire them to...well...create. The Muses were the nine greek goddesses in charge of the arts - Zeus's daughters to be specific. The Shrike was the muse of the poet in Hyperion. My coffee maker is my muse. My muse failed me this week.

I enjoy the process of preparing coffee more than coffee itself. It is very ritualistic to me. I probably couldn't even tell the difference between a meticulously brewed cup and some Folgers. But I insist on buying fresh whole beans and grinding them for the pot I'm about to make. I always get my water from the Brita filter. Does it make it taste better? I don't know. But it does take longer to make. I get plenty of thinking time while I'm going through the motions of making a pot of coffee. And that's just the prep-work. Once I push the go button on the machine, it's going to take its sweet time about filling that pot. I can't rush through this ritual so it forces me to sit still for a while and think.

It is during this ordeal that the final pieces of a comic fall into place. I'm able to wade through the jumble of random thoughts and incomplete ideas and focus. By the time I've poured myself a cup of caffeine, I'm at peace and ready to work. This week, however, my coffee maker abandoned me. There I was, with a full cup of coffee in hand, and no closer to an idea than when I had started. So I apologize now for this completely idea-free comic. My muse has one week to redeem itself before I go and buy some Folgers.

Suddenly I'm glad I don't drink coffee, that's one scary-ass pot.
