August 22nd to 29th

Welcome to the slightly delayed Week Ahead, I hope your Monday morning is humming along nicely. There have been some cool site developments over the past week that are probably worth mentioning. For one, we've been working on some new swag and gathering opinions on some of our designs, you can see what we have so far here. In other news, Pyro fixed some lingering Internet Explorer site issues that should make browsing the site a bit easier for those of you stuck using Microsoft's unexciting little navigator. Our Game of the Week is none other than Advance Wars: Dual Strike for the Nintendo DS, it ships August 22nd for the low low price of $32.95. It may be enough to push me over the edge and buy one of those crazy Nintendo clam things.

Wow, Nintendogs gets no mention?

*Looks at the DS list*

Looks like they get mentioned to me. I'm not really UP on the DS games, is that the first release of Nintendogs? I guess those different versions aren't just additions then..*shrug*

How many times can they repackage the same Futurama episodes over and over? If the DVDs sell enough to warrant so many different options, then maybe they wold get a clue and bring the show back.

Yeah, it's the first release, and they'll be the best selling DS titles to date. Easily. I think that deserves an actual mention, not just a listing with everything else.

I think they're planning on using the sales of this DVD to gauge whether or not they should create new content. Which, if you think about it, is kind of sh*tty: why would a fan buy this DVD when they already have the boxsets? There's no point. Which means the sales will be pretty dismal. Which gives FOX an excuse not to okay more Futurama content. After all, its no secret that Groening and Fox don't see eye to eye on Futurama - Groening's been very possessive about the show and Fox does not like that one bit.

Anyway, I do hope the DVD sells, because there are some great episodes on that collection. I may just pick up one to tide me over before I can scrounge up enough money for the box sets. Plus, I am a Futurama fangirl, obviously, and owning more Futurama goodness can't hurt :).

You're a cat geek! Just admit it!

Actually, the only thing preventing me from getting a Black Lab is that I live in a fairly central location that doesn't offer much space in the area for dogs. I'm thinking my next house will = new dog for Certis. I'm a cat geek only by default right now

stop now!!! please!!

I might have to buy a DS tonight. AW for me and Nintedogs for the girl might put me over the edge.

I'm all over my new Dachsund buddy soon to come this way. Can't wait!

Luda, thanks for actually mentioning Nintendogs, it's great you're here to keep us on track.

As for me , I'm holding out until they've got a Nintendogs whippet. Only then will I buy the game.

Between Advance Wars and a few of the other games I'm close to the edge too. Hold me.

It's a scientific fact that men with DS's and Nintendogs get laid with higher frequency than those without. They've done studies and research and stuff. You know, science.

I don't even know what Nintendogs is about, but the box art is ridiculously cute. They'll probably sell by the boatload.

Roger that. I was just perusing the titles on EBGames.com. The price drop didn't hurt either.

I did it, your turn big man. Picked up a silver DS, Kirby for me and Yoshi for the girlfriend. Stores said they will have Nintendogs and AW tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest.

EDIT: Oh yeah, my girlfriend was on the fence, then she played the demo of Nintendogs at one of the kiosks and two minutes later she said "where is the game?"

I had to preorder Nintendogs for my daughter so she'd get the "Doggy bag" lunch bag. I had to She had a knife.

On another note, I freaking loved Gladiator. 17 minutes of new footage may make me spend the cash.

I just read about nintendogs. Sounds like a non-slimy, actually interesting version of Seaman. I'm sure that they will make a fortune with it. Not sure if it will get me to start playing games with a Palm -style stylus though. The very idea makes me shudder with repressed memories of dot-com era staff mettings ...

Fletcher, after playing with the stylus a couple of hours last night, I can tell you it is pretty good, very smooth. My hands are a little too big for it so I wish the stylus was a little longer, I'm going to look for an accessory longer one to use around the house.

*ahem*

Thank you.

Advance Wars DS has a few notable differences from the GBA version:

a) the upper screen is used PERFECTLY for the much-needed info on what each unit can and can't do (helps with my prior complaint about the GBA version and the need to remember these kinds of details)

b) the view is slightly tilted as they use the 3D capability to shrink the sprites at the distance. Supposedly for 3D effect, but it lacks the shadows, so it still doesnt look 3D, just tilted and slightly squished.

c) there are clouds and birds flying by, its a nice touch. the battle animations have more background animation.

d) the music everywhere is exceedingly gay, except for the map. I only played one map, and the music is energetic, almost Command and Conquer-ish. I have a feeling theyll drop the ball later on.

e) the crappy cheesy dialogue is still there. It can be skipped by pressing START but they seem to put hints about the current map in the middle of it. So I am forced to wander through the endless "witty" exchanges that would be considered dull by a 10 year old.

Overall, my impression is positive thanks to the games' efficient use of the upper screen for detailed information on the current unit. I may actually, gasp, play this game after all.
