Flapping in the Wind

Section:

Sometimes you've just got to let it all hang out.

Like a fat man in a shirt three sizes too small for him, I publicly offer myself up for ridicule so that you can feel better about yourselves and your place in society. No, I haven't joined the Shriners. I tried to but apparently you have to be an old man with no shame to join so I forwarded them on to Elysium. In this case I've taken the plunge into the glamorous world of Dungeons and Dragons of the pen and paper variety and by god I'm dragging anyone within arms reach down with me. Both hoochie and Gaald have rolled up characters for our first ever Sunday of dice rolling, nerd jokes and arguments about whether or not it's cool for a Half-elf to have blue eyes. I'll give you a hint, it's not cool and nothing you can do will ever change that.

I want to make fun of you, but I feel a bit overwhelmed.  I can't find a good foothold to start from. - Elysium

I'm not exactly sure why it is that playing video games seems somehow more socially acceptable to me than playing a D&D game face to face with real people. It must be some remnant from junior high when during exams and lunch hours the nerds would play their little pen and paper games while we mocked them behind our juice boxes. We'd follow that up with going home and playing the Super Nintendo for hours but at least we got to sit next to girls on the bus.

That's all behind me now. As an adult you have to move past the stereotypes from your childhood and see the value in things you may not have appreciated before. For example, who knew painting thumb sized figures would be so much fun? I spent a good four hours listening to the cast commentary on The Two Towers DVD and painting a couple figures I picked up for our game. I can see why some people buy Warhammer figures, paint them and then never play the actual game. It's nice to create something with a good end result even though you have no talent.

*insert starting Gamers With Jobs joke here*

I'm sure those of you "in the know" are probably shaking your heads at the idea of three people, new to the game, trying to run their own campaign. That was the original plan but we've since been rescued by a friend of ours who just happens to have played and DMed all sorts of games since the early eighties. He's normal and he doesn't smell funny either so everything should work out great! We're meeting this Sunday for our first session and both hoochie and I plan on going full hilt and trying to roleplay our characters as much as possible. None of this "my character says hello to the wizard" stuff. WeÂ'll be speaking AS our characters when the time for conversation comes. ItÂ's a little scary but hoochie has training as an actor and I might be drunk so it should work out ok. I will of course fill everyone in once the session is over, we all need a light ego boost once in a while.

As an added bonus today I want to share a Bloom County strip posted as part of Comics.com ongoing Bloom County re-run.

If only they knew.

Wow. First Elysium admits EverQuest makes him coo...repeatedly. Certis follows that up with a public admission so rife with geekery it makes Elysium rank up there with The Fonz on the coolness traceability matrix. I suppose it's my turn next, and, evidently I have to top those that have posted before. In any other company I could complete this task admirably by simply stating that I write and draw comics for a website about videogames. However I doubt that will suffice here. You're going to have to give me some time...either to think of something truly shameful, or to pick up a new hobby. Something that combines Captain Kirk, girdles, a d20, and protective mylar sheets suitable for displaying Magic: The Gathering cards should do the trick.

I think it's entirely possible that Hoochie and Certis *become* virgins again this weekend. Is that possible? We shall see...

Again? Bagga, they aren't married yet.

Only sinners would glorify and participate in fantasies dealing with the black arts. Plus, didn't Certis get lucky in Tijuana once? I hear the aftermath can't be cured.

Hoochie: This is so cool, I feel like I'm back in the
Renaissance.
Other guy: Please stay in character, gentle wench.
Certis: Verily I declare that the Earth revolves around the
Sun and not t'other way round.
Hoochie: Stop looking down my blouse Copernicus.
Certis: Forsooth, mine eyes doth rove of their own accord.

Anyone know where that's from?

Simpsons? Mensa episode, maybe?

I suddenly don't feel as nerdy as some of you.

Those don't look like the dice I sent you man? You didn't like the big 100 sided die?

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Hey, you stole my line!

Coming soon: Sway admits he participates in Erotic Live Action Role Playing set in the Furry Star Trek universe. They play games of Magic the Gathering to decide who gets to be on top of the furpile and roll a d20 in order to decide who gets to clean up afterwards.

That should cover it.

Since we're trying to figure out exactly where we all fit on the Geek Hierarchy I thought a map might help

Hey, you stole my line!

Don't anger the leering fish, asshat!

There's an implied smiley there, btw. Asshat.

Thanks for the map, Pyro. It confirms that I am solidly less a geek than Certis.

This isn't all that geeky! I just rolled up my first character a few weeks ago and, truth be told, PnP is right up there fun-wise with electronic gaming. Admittedly, some of the people smell funny, but they're all alright to hang out with for a few hours (though one must be sure to take a shower upon ending before any lady friends drop by the dorm). Now if only I could have a halfling with blonde hair...

Heh, it's not so bad. I used to play a LOT of PnP RP's with friends, though never DnD. My favorite game system was Heavy Gear.

Those don't look like the dice I sent you man? You didn't like the big 100 sided die?

You know, I never got those dice.

I think it's entirely possible that Hoochie and Certis *become* virgins again this weekend

That. Would. Be. Awesome!

NERDS!

Open the box, and you will rule them all.

Never got them?! Grrr, damn Canadian custom officials.... I sent you a nice little collection.

Sorry Gnome, after a while I just flat our forgot about them. Drop me an email with the address you sent them to, maybe we can figure it out. I was really looking forward to those dice!

Well me and a couple of close friends have been playing DnD every saturday for about a year now. We're about to start playing shadowrun again also. I've turned down to many events on saturdays because of this, it's kinda sad really. Nice figures by the way. I'm starting to do mine over this week cause I've just started multi-classing as a sorcerer.
Oh and we play Halo before DnD and Magic afterwards. It's too much for one night.

My one recommendation for playing D&D: play a character with some realistic faults, including whatever you roled for INT. Try to make said faults not ones you currently have.

Playing D&D like it's a computer game gets boring quickly. I don't know about you all, but playing Civ I and Civ II, I generally turned the first civilization I encountered into diplomat/spy factories. It worked. It was an optimal, fast way of succeeding. Human being, dwarves and half-lings (don't get me started about elves) almost never do anything optimally. We do things half-assed, or our emotions rule our actions.

Obvious example: one guy I used to play with would want to start a ten minute discussion on tactics the moment a "whif" of danger appeared.
Do overly tall, testosteroned barbarians stop before a battle to carefully discuss flanking and baiting tactics? I never thought so, and so my barbarian "O-Tora" (japanese for big tiger...i think) would wade in, two-handed sword swinging, screaming at the top of his lungs, "Did I hit anything?" With a couple Guinness in me, that was the height of strategy. At the same time, I had a priest who had a very different set of morals and goals...and foibles. I love foibles. Cause you notice in The Two Towers who you have the most empathy for...Gandalf, Aragorn, Frodo, or Gollum? To me that would be in ascending order with Gandalf getting the least, and Gollum the most. Role-playing Gollum would get tiring, though.

My one recommendation for playing D&D: play a character with some realistic faults, including whatever you roled for INT. Try to make said faults not ones you currently have.

That's a tall order, I don't even know what it's like to have faults. Is it hard?

Good point though, if you're going to roleplay you can't just go with what sounds good and turns out best for your character. My rogue will probably shoot his mouth off a little more than he should, much unlike myself.

I'm starting a campaign with some guys from work tomorrow. Going to start out at 13 level.

Wow, I'm not as geeky as I thought. I cap out on the map at "anime fans that insist on subtitles" and "video gamers." I haven't played a pnp role playing game in years, so that doesn't count right?

I say you can be as dorky as you wanna be, as long as you don't turn into these guys..... Make sure the sound is on...classic.

I forgot where I saw this picture first.

ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
I've been playing table top games for years, plus Warhammer 40k. On top of that, I work at a Renaissance Faire. Fear my nerdiness!!

Oh, and yeah, I used to play in LARPs like the one hubbinsd linked to. It seemed fun at the time, but looking back, I can honestly say it was kinda lame.
