$99 PS2 At Target?

GCAdvanced and PS2.IGN are reporting that the Target store chain supposedly will lower the Playstation 2 price down to $99.

Sources from Target today told IGN they have received printed fliers with the price of the PlayStation 2 at $99. The change will allegedly happen in mid-November, right before Thanksgiving, the traditional starting gate for Christmas shopping in North America.
However, currently this doesn't seem to be an indicator of a general price drop and might as well be a Thanksgiving sales stunt planned by Target.

I hope its true and permanent.. I'm sick of lugging my xbox up and down the stairs everytime I want to play on my projector...

I'd buy a second xbox at $99 in a heartbeat.

Unlikely... unless things have changed, the console makers do everything but force retailers to sell at the price the console maker sets. If Target does this, it would be burning some major bridges with Sony.

Lowering the price to $99 make a lot of sense. I'm guessing that it won't drop the price below what it costs to produce the console - it's probably the cheapest of the 3 current consoles to make. It'll pull in all the people (like me) who are on-the-edge about buying a PS2. It'll force MSoft to drop the XBox price to $99, which, as the most expensive console to produce, would create further massive losses for the XBox division. It'll take the steam of of Nintendo's suddenly-cheap Gamecube. By doing it in November, they're guaranteeing a significant percentage of gamers who'll find a new PS2 under the Christmas tree. Here's hoping!
