Dragon Empires Interview

Section:

There's a nice little Q&A over at Action 4 Life with Peter Tyson, the "Community Liaison" for the upcoming MMORPG Dragon Empires. A4L certainly opened with the question on everybody's mind:

A4L: With the seeming wide open play that you are incorporating into Dragon Empires, is there a fear that it will all boil down to a "hack and slash" failure?

Read more for the answer and observations.

Tyson: Nope, I don't think we'll end up with that. There is a lot of subtle interaction in our world. For example, while you're out bashing monsters gathering their loot players back in cities will be wanting that loot to create items. Cities will want you to bring the loot to their city to boost their local economy, other cities will be at war with that city and will not want you to go there. While folks may not actively stop you or encourage you to buy or sell in a certain place the point is that players are connected to each other in very real and important ways. What you do can change the world.  I think stuff like this alone will stop Dragon Empires being yet another hack and slasher.

Not that he would have said, "Yes, I think that is a very good possibility. You might want to wait to buy it until we see if it flops."

Dragon Empires has certainly been on my radar for a while. The screenshots of the environments have been brilliant and full of variety. I've always felt that it will be a shame when they fill it up with people and we all have to notch down our settings to play it. Personally, I'd be content with a Dragon Empires screensaver or series of desktop images. I actually think DE is better looking than World of Warcraft. However I think I know who the winner will be when the game is trying to run at 30 frames per second with a dozen players on-screen.

It makes me a little nervous that they haven't shown any interface or real game play so far. Especially at E3 no less!

What are they afraid of?

*shrug* the MOTS truth I would imagine. I'm still willing to give them a look even though I already am pretty sure this will just be a blip on the radar for a month or so.
