Middle Earth Online Announced

Vivendi has announced that Turbine, the makers of the Asheron's Call series, are developing the long awaited Middle Earth Online MMORPG. The actual game will take place during the time-line of the books and it is currently scheduled for release in 2004. pc.ign.com has the first shots of the game in action, check those out over here.

The 3D role-playing game (RPG) will immerse players in the Middle-earth world where they will choose their identities from a cast of archetypal Tolkien characters, form kinships, build race-specific dwellings, explore the landscape, craft unique items and weapons, and perform myriad other activities to bring the world-renowned fantasy realm to life.

The fact that Turbine is making it means I can't let myself get too excited. Asheron's Call 2 just didn't do it for me.

Since it is Turbine, we can expect 2 things.  One is that it will have lots of moments of brilliance dotted around with a strong initial concept.  The second is they will completely fubar the strong initial concept in early patches and cyclically fix/break things in ensuing patches.  Oh and  third thing,  various parts of the chat system will constantly break, making it difficult to make new friends and keep them.

I wonder if their source control will be better this time around?

I'm hoping this will be the game that AC2 should have been.
