Battlefield 3 Catch-All

Battlefield 3 is all the lovin you will need for a long time. You could also call out sick.

At this point, I'm worried DICE have completely messed up the balance for air vehicles. The attack helicopter seems to have had a nerf between the beta and release, and the lack of flares means it's currently pretty much impossible to level on the European servers.

Jets are fun enough to fly, but are completely peripheral to anything else that's going on.

As a ground-bound player, I can't say that upsets me too much

I got some time in yesterday, I am sad to say that I am no longer any good at Battlefield games. I hope it is just a lack of practice, but I was feeling like I was stinking up the joint.

Vent is still the Voice Comm of choice for this game/group, right?

My first round I went 0-10. Next round started out 0-4 and then about 50/50 after that. This was playing 64 player Caspian Border. switched over to Rush mode, which I'm a lot more comfy with from playing quite a bit in BC2. I'm at a .93 KDR now. You just need to get the hang of it again. Keep at it and you'll be fine in no time.

I'm currently giggling with glee at how relatively low powered helicopters are jets are in this one.

The most frustrating games of BF2 ever were always any game where a couple of really good jet pilots were playing. I have many memories that progress something like this:

Spawn: Get bombed. Die.
Spawn: Get bombed. Die.
Spawn: Get in jeep. Get to a cap point. Get strafed by guns and die before you can even uncap the point.
Spawn: Get bombed. Die.
Spawn: Get in tank. Drive ten yards. Get bombed. Die.

Aaaand continue variations of that from start to finish for an entire map and every map after that had jets unless you changed servers to get away from them.

Maybe they've gone too far the other way, but I saw enough Helicopters cutting down stuff on the ground in various maps yesterday to think otherwise.

I love it so far. Looks great on High settings on the PC.

Many of the 64 person servers are super laggy though - I've been staying on 32 and it's been much better.

Dog house, here I come.

I'll be on the 360 tonight. Any reports on the graphical quality on the 360 in comparison to the OMG PC?

I'm usually not too concerned with graphics, but I think they're amazing on for the 360. Much cleaner than BC2 IMO. Knock on wood, but I've been seriously impressed by how smoothly this has been running from the start. Little hiccups and some squad matching improvements are needed, but light years ahead of BC2.

My biggest gripe has been flag placement, some of which feels too linear. I'm not a huge fan of 3 flags in a line, but certainly not game breaking.

Everyone on the 360 be sure to join the Gamers With Jobs 360 platoon so we can squad up.

You'll get a little influx of requests at the end of the week when us UK players get the game.

You got to the jeep?

I've been impressed at how even things seem right now - of course that will change once everyone else levels up and I'm still stuck with the defaults.

Well, it's all degrees, isn't it? If air vehicles prove to be as peripheral as they are now, all the jet/heli pilots will just go on foot and shoot you in the face anyway. While I'm very sorry people have been traumatised by better players in their earlier lives, better players will always find a different way of killing you

In general though, if you're going to include them in the game, it might be a good idea to make them useful in some way People keep on saying vehicles are meant to be an important part of the Battlefield series.

The problem on the European servers at the moment is that everyone playing is a Battlefield fanatic, the kind of person who hunts around to unlock the game a few days early. It will be interesting to see how balance changes with an influx of more people.

Seriously? I'm holding top recon?
That won't last long!
I've never spawned as recon.
One time I picked up an impressive looking rifle, pointed it down a hallway and popped a couple of heads, and was promptly RPGed for my trouble.

Important != Totally overpowered.

The problem with Helicopters and Jets in Battlefield 2 wasn't so much that they were seriously powerful, the problem was that the counters for them didn't work at all. One good tank driver can scatter half a team of infantry, but it only takes 1 really good engineer to stop the reign of terror. For now, the air power in the game does not look broken, but the game has almost been out for 24 hours, it serves us well to not decide about how good or bad it is until people have more practice with the air power, and with the anti-air power.

From my little time playing, the A-10s have been very good at neutralizing tanks (by design) and the choppers have been more of an incentive for infantry to take cover than a means for a foot soldier to get back to the spawn screen.

They are underpowered right now because no one has any of the unlocks for them. Once dedicated pilots like myself play for a week we might see that change.

I don't mind better players killing me - hell everyone that plays is better than me. I don't like the idea of mere seconds after spawning being blown to smithereens because the map has turned into an air-combat simulator. I'm one of those guys who only played Karkand, and while my K/D ratio was 1:19837 I was happy.

I just dug out and reinstalled my joystick. Time to find an unsuspecting server to train on.

I got to play Caspian once last night, and I was an absolute terror in my jet. Can't wait to get some unlocks going!

I plan on setting it up tonight, but has anyone else already tried mapping their 360 controller to BF3 for vehicles/piloting? I know BC2 was a Female Doggo, I thought I heard somewhere that BF3 would make it easier to map actions to specific controls.

Yup

Btw, GWJ Kill Zone server runs WAY better than any other one I've played on. Very smooth!

Any way to play alone to try out and 'train' on the aircraft without being shot down?
can you host and start a password protected server with one person?

Nope, and unlike BFBC2, the default is that a server with 1 person in it won't let you leave the spot where you spawn and get in vehicles.

so I am doomed to crash on takeoff for the rest of my life and to be labeled "YOU FING NOOB GO PLAY WOW!" in perpetuity forthwith.

Ack. My order from Amazon just showed up and they sent me the wrong version. It's the PS3 version and not the 360 version. There goes my pre-order bonus.

If you ring Amazon they'll probably be able to sort out any issues about retaining the preorder bonus. Amazon (in the UK at least) are usually pretty good at fixing problems.

I ordered from Amazon - they sent me a dog tag pack code - Where do I enter this? Can't seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks,

This is information I also need.

I put in about 8 hours on the 360 and here are my thoughts:

Minor Complaints

No Commo Rose. It's very akward to use the Back button to request ammo, health, and transport. I hope they find a way to add in a radius/dial function to streamline this. I don't want to stop moving to try and and aim at a teammate for help. Why can't I press a button and just yell it out a la BF2?

No option to change loadouts or exit the game between rounds. Instead of staring at stats I'd rather be browsing through my kits and setting my loadouts for each class. I hope these tweak this later.

I'm a little disappointed with the unlock system - mainly the fact that they force you to decide between equipment. The Assault Class unlocks a M320 underbarrel grenade launcher (not very powerful btw) but to use it you have to give up medikits. Why? It's not like the M320 turns a ordinary medic into a godly one so there's no need to do this. The same goes for the Engineer Class, which has to choose between AT Mines or the Repair Tool. Again, the AT Mines are very ineffective on large maps/open areas so why do I have to sacrifice my Repair Tool just to throw a few mines down. Dumb.

Bonus Complaint- how come there aren't any smoke, flash, or stun grenades. I'm pretty sure they were in BF2. Doesn't make sense that the only smoke is available to the Assault Class' grenade launcher.

Positive Thoughts

I'm pleasantly surprised with just how fun and chaotic the matches are with only 24 players. Coming from BF2, I was REALLY worried that the console version would feel dumbed down and there wouldn't be as much action but I was most definitely wrong. In fact, I actually think there are times when there is just too much going on especially when spawning on a squad member whose already in the thick of it.

The game looks amazing! I was also hesistant about getting the console version after seeing how gorgeous it looks on the PC but DICE really delivered beyond what I expected. The lighting is outstanding, destruction and explosions are epic (although sometimes slightly delayed), and the environments (particularily outside the playing area) look incredibly realistic. I <3 Tehran Highway! I have to wear a bib to keep the drool under control.

I'll be on all night tonight to hit me up!
