Battlefield 3 Catch-All

Be advised...

Played some last night with some fellow GWJ guys and really had a blast. Although my kill/death ratio is like 1/35 right now.

Any ideas on what the best class to play would be for someone who doesn't shoot very well? I want to spend the most amount of time in a class where the unlocks will fit my playstyle.

I don't know about 'unlocks that fit your playstyle' since most of them will be guns that require shooting. Maybe support since you don't really have to be accurate to suppress.
Personally? I would recommend Assault. Your first rank unlock is a Shotgun. Equip that. Stick to your squad, but hang in the back guarding the rear. Make sure you do lots of spotting and dropping medpacks when you run into opposition.
Do that for a few rounds and you'll unlock the defib kit. And there's nothing more satisfying than providing your squad with a solid core.

When playing the Beta, as Assault or Support, I'd drop a health pack or ammo crate almost immediately after spawning on a squad mate. Shortly after, I would toss my one grenade in the general direction of the enemy. Then, I'd die. Rinse and repeat but I always felt like I was providing some assistance to my squad.

This was, of course, on the meat grinder of a map Operation Metro. More open maps may lend themselves to a a more civilized play style.

I'd advise against the shotgun for most of these bigger maps for somebody unsure of their shooting skills. Unless you're in medium to close range, you're going to die.

Maps like Metro in the tunnels can be very good for shotgunners, but mainly if you work the angles.

I think the thing to do to get into this game if your dying alot is to play that mid range player. Probably assault, support, or maybe even engie on a vehicle map. Stick with the squad, and your your abilities. Drop health, ammo, do revives, pop in and out of cover and shoot rockets at vehicles or clusters of enemies.

I think what got me going into BFBC2, especially on PC games with more players, was that I had a bad tendency to run out in the open after people WAY too much. Strategic and measured movement to the objectives is a main key to improving. If I'm dying a lot, it's generally because I'm running and gunning out of my skill range, instead of working the angles and supporting my team. If I slow down, I do better until I find the rhythm again.

Another option is to learn to be the vehicle support guy. You can do a lot of damage in a tank or a mobile AA. Again, controlled movement to keep your vehicle alive instead of running into a fatal fight.

I applied to the Goodjer platoon. Eventually, I'll get home to play this one!

Ran - Does BF3 play well with AMD cards? I remember lots of people having issues in BC2.

I have a 570 in my new build and it is silky smooth.

Apparently roles have reversed this time around. I remember Wired cursing the gods until a patch was released for BC2 with his AMD.

Not seen much chatter about AMD issues with the game.

Tried playing on Ultra for awhile - I don't know if my 6770 can keep up. Just a little too much skipping around.

One reason I fired up the SP last night was to see how performance was without any external factors like networking, however I think that MP is more demanding generally.

I know this is a bit off topic, but you could try rubbing whiskey on baby lobsters gums. Works a treat - natural anaesthetic and soporific. I did that when my daughter was teething, and found it to work without fail.

I've had no issues at all on my new build, with an EVGA 570 classified, ultra looks amazing.

All of this. The first thing I always have to remember is slow down. Running like a fool into a room in a game where it only takes a couple of rounds to put you down leads to too much time spent waiting to respawn.

To answer the question though - I'd play as either support or Engineer.

Nevermind.

I love this thing...

If you guys are stuck with Origin names, there's that.

tagging - can't wait to get home to start playing this

Anyone running this on older hardware? I'm still packing a 3.0 dual core and GEforce 260 GTX. That config didn't handle BFBC2 particularly well (had to run on low settings for best performance) so I'm having trouble believing it'll handle BF3 at all... but I'm curious.

Although not quite as old, I am running an E5200 Dual Core at 3.2ghz with 4GB of Ram, and a GTX 560 Ti. Runs everything High, no problems. Your vid card will be the holdup, but you should be fine on medium I would suspect.

BF3 seems to need less CPU than BFBC2. There isn't quite as much destruction. I actually think it runs better than BFBC2 and I just did a system update a few months ago. While it may take more horsepower, everything seems much smoother.

Tagging the new thread. I'll be here in my ghillie suit, back at base, doing absolutely nothing.

Applied to the 360 Platoon as well; nice job(s) on the logo(s) everyone.

I'll be on by 5:30 EST tonight, to shoot fools in the face.

Actually, the best way to make him stop crying is for you to drink lots of whiskey! Well...Maybe he will still cry, but at least it won't bother you.

OK, I made a twitter recommendation to the battlelog dev at DICE to add server links to the platoon page, and he said it was a good idea and to post it as feedback on battlelog.

So I did. If you agree, adding a bit of additional feedback might help. I think you can just click "like". Thanks.
