World of Tanks: Catch All

Whenever i play arty i get taken out within moments by scouts. I switched to the US version so i could have some fighting chance against them.

Arty is fun but the smart tankers know how to avoid artillery fire.

Keep moving in the open (I've still bullseyed a few light tanks going flat out across open fields. THAT's epic)
Find positions to fight from that have some obstruction between you and the enemy base. The corner of a house, a boulder, a larger dead tank all do pretty nicely for that.

If you see a shell land near you, DO NOT STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE. I get so many kills from guys who dont bother to move. This is probably due to tunnel vision and low volume on your speakers. Crank it up and listen for nearby explosions!

As an arty-user, I love nothing better than a tank that has lost a track.

Just remember, once you see a tank(and fire on it if you're in concealment), it can see you and so can its arty. Get any important business done fast, and find something to shield you from the arty. If you can find a good spot that shields you from typical arty hideouts and still set up an ambush on advancing tanks, awesome, tell me where it is.

It feels like a large amount of my matches end with me being tracked and left as fish food for arty or tank killers. Grrrrrr. I can get up and go grab another beer any time I'm tracked in a TD.

Did I mention manual aiming in this thread already? I haven't used auto-aim since one of the first few days I played in Beta. Dialing track shot after track shot on another poor fellow is oh so sweet. Tic for Tac I guess.

This probably happens to me one in 5 games. And yes, I always check to make sure it was actually Artillery before complaining.

I haven't seen it here, but I've been on the official forums, which are surprisingly not a complete cesspool and seen it mentioned a few times.

Gah!! I've had that stupid auto-targetting turn on accidentaly, without knowing how I've done it, and more importantly, how to turn the damn thing off (in the thick of combat).

Playing this the other day and watching the reveal of the Clan Wars stuff, I realize how much this is like Chromehounds, and how much I miss Chromehounds.

So, I finally found my enjoyable niche: Tank Destroyers. Fun, fun fun

Artillery still drives me batty though.

Been playing this an enjoying it. I joined the TacticalGamer clan and it was pretty fun coordinating in TS. The 3 person limit for a platoon sucks. Doing a countdown and everyone hitting ready at the same time gets everyone in the same game, but on opposite sides. Wanting to try the clan war, but you have to be something like a minimum of tier 5 or so.

I'm up to tier 3 in the US branch and someone made a comment that I chose a pretty grindy path. Are there branches that are less grindy than others?

Friend me up if your still playing, my handle is stixvegas.

I've been playing the Russian branch and my goal from the outset was to get to the T-34. It wasn't bad at all until the A-20 came along which was an absolutely horrible tank at the tier it is at.

I'm determined, for the time being, not to put any money in. For the first three or so weeks I was playing often but now that I've gotten to the T-34 I play a couple of matches an evening in it, and one in my BT-2 to change things up.

The T-34 is pretty fun. Even though the 57mm gun on is widely praised I've gone with the 76mm because of the matchmaking was setting me up at the bottom of my team fairly often. I had enough when I hit a tank from behind with the 57mm and it bounced off.

I'll friend you up the next time I log on, my handle is Roke.

I loooove the 57mm on the T-34, I really missed it when I moved up to the T-34-85. I really like the 30 rounds/min, and the higher gun's average penetration isn't that much higher than the 57mm.

I'm up to an upgraded Marder II (7.6cm(?) gun sounds nice and "boom-y"), Grille (I got pretty good at hitting moving targets), and the T-34 (get in behind heavies and shoot the engines, or tracks for the arties to hit more easily). I love being able to just jump from tank to tank without having to wait for the match to end. Grinds up the "silver" quickly, but means that I'm pretty spread out with my research points.

Buying gold even if only to convert XP is worth it.

Picked up this game yesterday, so far I'm really enjoying it. I can put 10-20 minutes into it on my gf's laptop when she's not using it. I've just been messing with the starting three tanks for now, although I have 11k silver saved up, so I should be able to buy my first new tank tonight. So far I like hanging back at a place with good visibility to peck at stragglers probing the front lines, so I think I'm going to go the TD route, perhaps concentrating on Germans.

How do TDs differ from SPGs? I have not tried any yet.

Yeah, I discovered this playing. I've gone back to the 57mm.

I've finally got the hang of playing the T-34 near the bottom of the tank list. Who would have thought that actually using cover would be a good idea?

Steppes has to be my favourite map. Not all that flat, big giant rocks providing cover and plenty of maneuvering room. My first match on the map had my T-34 dancing around a KV to destroy it which was awesome.

SPGs are basically artillery that provide indirect fire. You search around for a target using a special SPG aerial view, click, and your vehicle fires, arching into the air and then down onto the target. I've dabbled with the lowest tier Soviet SPG but I was terrible, didn't know what I was doing, and too impatient to figure anything out. You rely on other tanks to spot for you while you sit back in a forest or something firing at targets. Tank Destroyers are basically tank with big guns and weaker armour. If I ever move on from the T-34 I'm moving to a tank destroyer for something new.

The SPGs I had played. I'm pretty handy with the Grille and I'm grinding up to the next tier. I've also got the earliest USA heavy tank (T1?) in my garage. I still get disassembled pretty quick in that sometimes.
I started on the German TD line last night and so far they're much fun.

Despite having a ton of hate for SPGs, I picked one up last night and pretty much confirmed what I already knew; SPGs in the early tiers are stupidly overpowered. Being able to one shot a guy you can't see is ridonkulous, and I did plenty of that.

With that said, playing also makes teammate errors glaringly obvious. When folks on your team get stupid and leave attack lanes open, those errors generally result in your death. Same with when they turtle or rush, as in both of those cases you quickly run out of scouts and/or get destroyed.

In pretty much all the early tier tanks, 1 to 2 (maybe even 3's) the guns are WAY more than a match for their armour-plating. You'll get penetrating hits practically every time, and they don't have much for hit points.

I try to advocate to my team every match that there should be a small group that hangs back right to the end (3ish is usually alright), barring that, at least stick around for the 1st few minutes (2 min is usually plenty) to kill those early rushers that get in behind your main line, and kill off at least 1 (if not many) of your team's arties, which can put your team at a serious disadvantage.

I've got my Grille fully upgraded now: the long barrel 15cm gun - waaaay more damage/shot (I can 1-shot guys with this, especially open-top tanks) and everything else. I just need the RP to unlock the Hummel.

I frakkin' love this tank. It probably doesn't hurt that I've gotten pretty good at aiming and my leading-shots hit with pretty good frequency on moving targets. I don't feel so useless when using the Grille vs either the T-34 (not that useless, but going against those Tier 8 Heavies = lots of bounced shots, even on the weaker facings) or the Hetzer (again many bounced shots on the high-tier tanks, without the ability to "circle-strafe").

Later at night (when the team-balancing can get really wacky) I stick with the Grille: it can kill little stuff, and actually do something against the Lowes, IS-3s, etc. Earlier in the evening, I'll use the Hetzeer/T-34, when the opposing tanks aren't "impenetrable".

Given that I'm playing on US servers several hours ahead of the east coast, this can be absolutely glaring at times. I very, very frequently find myself in the middle of very, very bad matches tank comp wise; like being the only light tank in a field of heavies and arty, or a team with *no* heavy tanks and your opponent having 3-4.

Okay, I've played this for one month now (3 weeks of which were "premium") and recorded 1600+ matches with a 52% winning percentage -- and loved every minute. I've unlocked Tier 7 tanks and tier 6 arty. Why is this game not burning up the hours of everyone else? It's awesome.

I enjoy it but I've tapered off a bit lately. I try to get on once a day to burn through the double xp fight, but I haven't paid anything yet.
Bullying smaller tanks with even a starter Heavy is fun, and getting a sweet long range artie kill is very satisfying.

Its burning my hours up Scrub =) I was up past midnight doing Ultimate Conquest last night.

Once you get to the end game w/ the T9/10 tanks and T7/8 Arty you can join a clan and start fighting for gold. We managed to take Portugal last night and will be pushing further into Spain tonight. Hopefully we make the sweet underbelly of France by the weekend.

Do you need a joystick to enjoy this?

Nope. Works great with mouse/keyboard.

I'm surprised there aren't more comments on this game. It has been eating my life and I haven't even dipped my toe into clan wars yet. But then again I've always been a tank nut and this just scratches the right itch. Anyone else still playing?

Every day Madthane, I've been playing every day. Best time to run into me is after 5pm eastern. name is Gegil send me a message and I'll see about platooning up with you =)

AlexDGT and I have joined the fun. Just dipped our toes in for the first time, but having a blast even in level 1 tanks. I love how you can jump in for a quick 15 minute session and not have to commit to something much longer.

I'm DonDGT on there.

I think it's kind of tough to get into. I played it a couple times a few weeks back and didn't have a clue what was going on. Came back to it on Wednesday and didn't do anything but play for like three days straight.

I can't tell if I suck or not, which is generally a strong sign that you suck. I'm averaging maybe .75 kills a game, and I'm in the 2nd-3rd US tier. I've had a few games where I manage 4 kills or so, and I've even managed to win a few battles single-handedly, but I think one on one, I'm about as likely to lose as I am to win. I managed to lose a head to head with a Cunningham in my T2 the other night. It's pretty clear that I suck with that particular tank.

Is anyone still playing this? I seem to come an go on the game. The only issue I have with the game. Is you have to pay cash to be able to start a group. So i dont know how easy it is. To be randomly inserted into one anothers game...

Not in ages. Probably wont bother either, but will check out World of Planes when it drops.
