NFL 2011 Week 6

And Jim Schwartz just plain don't like Jim Harbaugh.

I don't think that's exactly what I'd take away from that, but what an ugly game overall. The Niners may have got that win but the amount of penalties ... wow.

The Lions offense looked dead the entire second half, not just those last two series.

Jim Schwartz claimed he was shoved and cussed at prior to the kerfuffle at the end of the game.

Edit: See for yourself...

If someone smacked my hand and then hit me in the back so hard it staggered me a step, I'd be pretty upset too. Can's blame Schwartz for that one.

I agree. It was beyond rude. Coaches often have something actual to say to each other after a game, and Harbaugh basically blew him off in about as rude of a way as possible. Total asshat move on his part.

Bucs win, even though they gave up yards they got some turn overs.

Steele, did you enjoy the game? The stadium is pretty nice, eh?

What I got out of it is after the back slap/push Schwartz said something like 'hey watch it' and Harbaugh basically said 'f*ck you' and it was on.

Break up the Niners!!!!

Wow, that was as bad as I've ever seen Drew Brees play. But I guess everyone has an off day.

But in looking at Tampa, how in the hell did this team get blown out by San Francisco?

Yes! Awesome game, great stadium, lots of fun. Looking forward to going back for USF-Louisville next month.

Also, was that the most ridiculous pass interference call ever in the 4th quarter or not? We only got 2 replays at the stadium, but the fact that the flag came out a good 10-15 seconds after the play was over made it even more of a joke. And it was on 3rd down, a drive extending save, which turned into a Saints TD.

Also, what's this hubub about the 49ers postgame? Video above is gone...

Jim Harbaugh was wrong. Jim Schwartz was more wrong. That's that.

Edit: Or not. Is Jim Harbaugh guilty of violating the unwritten rules of decorum for head coaches regarding celebrating a win at the end of the game? Yes; as Winston Churchill once wrote, one should be magnanimous in victory. Jim Schwartz could have easily left it at that and this scenario would be a minor footnote for the week ahead. He could have even gone to the postgame press conference and railed against Harbaugh, saying things like "This isn't the Pac-12. Act like you've been there before." But he didn't; Schwartz took the moral high ground that Harbaugh gift-wrapped for him and proceeded to piss on it by acting like a thug, acting like a player throwing a cheap shot hit against another for celebrating on the field. He should have been the adult in this situation, instead he's the child. He should rightfully suffer a stiffer penalty from the league than Harbaugh and should be ridiculed for his actions in the media and among the fan base.

That said, both coaches should use this incident as a motivational tool. They should take the video from today (Schwartz should probably selectively edit the cut he shows to the Lions) and tell their teams that "They don't respect us." This can be a big motivational tool and both coaches clearly know how to fire up their teams. This is why football fans should hope for a Detroit/San Francisco rematch in the postseason, because thanks to this confrontation between coaches, this could shape up to be one of the most compelling rivalries in football.

/end Bob Costas-esque rant

Yeah I caught the video on the RedZone I recorded while I was in Tampa... mostly just so I could see 49ers highlights. And uh yeah... kinda weird slap on the back, not much respect from Harbaugh. Looked like a guy a little too excited about giving a team their first loss. This isn't the BCS anymore.

But then Schwartz looked like a f*cking maniac chasing him down and having players holding him back and yelling. Jeez.

Of course I'm sure I'm biased. But without Schwartz's overreaction this could have just been Harbaugh apologizing in postgame for getting a little too happy and Schwartz could have ragged on the rookie coach a bit, and all could have been funny. Now the league is "investigating" and it's all serious business!

I'm just glad we have the classier Harbaugh brother.

"Jim. What gives?"

I wish the Bears could play the Vikings every game for the rest of the season.

I'm never picking the Panthers again. Ever.

You shouldn't have picked 'em the first time.

I'm calling a Panthers win next week. Carolina is at home, and Washington has a QB problem (and is overrated anyway).

This week, I figured the Panthers D was bad enough and the Panthers O would make too many mistakes to win. Sadly, I was right.

Props to Atlanta's D for a couple of athletic/acrobatic INTs and for keeping No. 89 locked down.

First off, there is a Drew Brees face. Helmet on, face tight, glaring out. I love the Drew Brees face. It's only better if I imagine sweet, sweet tears falling down his cheeks.

Yesterday was the "real" Tampa; inconsistent but plays hard, and should be in about every game. Also, Tampa has had a tendency to play the Saints tough; they won in NO the last two years. The defensive line didn't get sacks, but Brees was pressured constantly yesterday and had to hurry a lot of throws. The Saints' run game is terrible (Ingram has been an utterly wasted pick so far), and, outside of Graham being a freak of nature, the WRs didn't get much separation. It was a Tampa kind of game; Freeman played well, Earnest Graham is clearly the team MVP at this point, and Brees has been pretty INT-happy in recent years anyways. As for last year . . .

Kind of like the unwritten rules for postgame coach handshakes, there generally appears to be an unwritten rule in blowouts in the NFL; we'll stop playing hard if you stop playing hard. Tampa knew they were beat in that game, and stopped trying. SF for some reason kept their foot on the accelerator and just kept trying as hard as possible to run up the score. It was like Harbaugh hadn't realized he'd left college, and it was OK to simply pile on the other team. Between that (particularly his going for it on 4th and 2 up 38 points with four minutes left against Tampa) and him shoving Schwartz in the back, I have come to a formal conclusion:

Jim Harbaugh is a giant douchebag.

I don't understand what you're talking about with running up the score? The Niners/Lions game was faaaaaar from a blowout. They only took the lead in the 4th quarter. It was the Lions who took their foot off the accelerator sometime after halftime.

Meant the 49ers-Bucs game, not the 19ers-Lions game. Hence all the references to "Tampa" in that paragraph . . .

I never agreed with something more. Harbaugh was excited for a big win, he let "happy" emotions get too "happy", I can't entirely fault a guy for that, but at the same time, don't be a douche, he wouldn't want a coach to do that to him after a tough loss. Schwartz didn't have to pursue Harbaugh, but he clearly went out of his way to start a confrontation, and boy did it ever work.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, yes. I got that from the first paragraph, but thought the second was all about the Lions. I forgot who steamrolled the Bucs the previous week.

Moving on.

Seems Schwartzy was a tad chippier earlier in the game. And as the article points out, Schwartz can hardly call the kettle black for being overly celebratory after a game.

Hah yeah. "Know the rules, Harbaugh", you can read his lips.

The Denver Broncos traded receiver Brandon Lloyd to the St. Louis Rams on Monday.

The Rams gave up a sixth-round pick in the 2012 draft that could become a fifth-round pick if Lloyd catches 30 passes this season for St. Louis, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

My theory is that Denver is considering taking a run at the Luck sweepstakes.

Tebow can't throw the ball well enough to utilize his receivers. This will be a perpetual Wildcat team from here on out.

I've seen Eric Decker make a terrible QB look decent in college so I'm sure he can help Tebow out. He's used to catching balls not thrown anywhere near him.

Fixed.

Harbaugh was slightly unprofessional. Schwartz was ridiculous.

You can take the coach out of the Titans but you can't take the Titan out of the coach.

Minnesota should sit McNabb on the bench and start playing Christian Ponder.

Frankly, I don't know why any coach would bother putting McNabb in their huddle anymore.

I think they were reluctant to get Ponder killed.

Last night was my official "Fine, done with McNabb" moment. My biggest concern is Ponder has effectively zero chance to succeed; he has a simply terrible offensive line, and the teams' WR corps is so lousy Bernard Berrian is playing. The offense consists of AP plowing through people and Harvin catching quick passes and running for his life; the team simply sucks. Ponder at least has his mobility to rely on, but he's got huge hurdles in front of him. He did not like vaguely confident when he came into the game last night, I was expecting to see a puddle under him when he broke the huddle.

The Vikings have become amazingly bad very quickly.

We could have said the same of Sam Bradford last year. Even worse there. And it's still bad. But he was able to step in and play.

Blaine Gabbert's going through the same thing in Jacksonville - no receivers except for an undersized guy who belongs in the slot, line is struggling to protect (although at least there it's partly from injuries to their highly drafted tackles), offense is basically just one of the top RBs in the game. It's rough for him too, but you see the development week to week, even when the development is things like, "he stopped fumbling snaps".

I don't envy anyone starting Charlie Johnson at left tackle, though. His struggles were a constant annoyance for Peyton Manning. Lesser QBs would have just been devoured.
