Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

Cool story?

Come on now, no harshing on Aurora, there's a lot of cool stuff in a less-than-state-of-the-art UI. Which reminds me, I need to go check it o0ut and see how it is progressing. I haven't looked at it in a long time.

Sorry, was more relevant to the discussion in the actual sins thread.

In other news, I was weak and went back to MoO2 this past weekend while waiting for DA:O to download from Steam. First time in probably a year.

I'll be the first to compliment Aurora as a system, and it is in fact an inspiration for a side project I'm working on. As for the UI, he said on the forums that was looking into porting it from old and and busted VB6 to C# and WPF for the GUI, but that seems to be very much a "working on it when I find time and I don't have much time lately" type of deal.

For real though, GalCiv2 can run windowed and is turn based.

How about something on Steam? I'm lazy and like to keep my gaming life simple and in one spot.

Yes it does look awful and being in VB6 is doing it no favors performance-wise. But I downloaded the latest (5.53) and started reading the wiki (which is pretty great) and this game is just incredible. The level of detail is insane. I'd forgotten how insane it is.

It was my "game that you have to play enough to qualify it as a skillset" of choice for a while before I got back into Dwarf Fortress, which is probably its only peer in terms of scope and complexity.

10 Minute Space Strategy: http://goblinlunatics.blogspot.com/ Similar to MoO, but less complicated. Interesting systems and random elements, though. Not on Steam, but it's free.

seconded. I love that game!

For fans of 4X space games, there's a new iOS universal app called Star Base Orion that's on an introductory sale for $4.99. The devs say the price will go to $7.99 after a while, and it will never drop below the current price. Their other titles have had plenty of sales, so take it or leave it.

That being said, the game plays brilliantly. It's a throwback to (dare I say it) MOO 2. It's also got multiplayer. I've only had a short time with it so far, but I kept saying to myself 'huh, neat' and 'that's cool', or 'pretty'. Consider this a quick look recommendation to give it a try. I've spent $5 on much less interesting things

You guys should check out Stellar Impact. The dev created a thread earlier in the year, but I only stumbled upon it today when I went to post TB's video from the game (which is in the thread).

Basically, Stellar Impact is a DOTA-like game with spaceships. Free to play (can't level up, so basically it's a demo) and right now it's only $13.49 to buy.

There is a custom Starcraft II map called Star Battle that looks a lot like this.

Hey guys, sorry I've not been around lately, getting 2 jobs kinda kicked my ass.

I did wanna share a couple of new stories on my site I hope y'all might like. First a Q&A with some folks behind Nexus 2, and I review the 1971 Star Trek text game. Enjoy!

Yes, and it's been killing the posts you make on your site. Gotta do what you gotta do (and I totally understand as I work two jobs, though clearly not as many hours as you. I'm only tired all the time, not near death tired all the time.)

I am glad you are still adding some new content now and then. I enjoyed the writeup of Star Trek. I programmed this game into my mom's Commodore CBM 3032 by typing it in from this:
IMAGE(http://www.atariarchives.org/basicgames/thumbs/pagecover.gif)
This game was pivotal to me in many ways. First, it was one the first computer games I ever played, back in 1979. 32 years later, I am still playing games and consider computer games to be my primary hobby. Second, it was my first exposure to programming, which led to both my vocation and avocation for programming software. I've had a long, successful career in software development and most, if not all of that can be traced back to this game. In many many ways, you could say that this game shaped my life in a way few other things have.

Hey guys, thought I'd pop in with a couple more stories:

What's Your Most Memorable Dogfight?
The Best and Worst Space Game Manuals…That I Know of ;)

I'm working on more reviews and such too. I had to skip a couple of games on my list, so now I'm working on 1978's Space I for the Apple IIe. I was also just made aware of TREK73, so I'll be covering that soon as well. Stay tuned.

/pimp mode off

I've actually been seeing a decent amount of comments like that, that this game helped get folks into programming. It's really heartwarming to see.

Man, I miss that game.

Also, typo:

As I turned and burned, the A-Wings would get in shots now and then, and I’d slowly see my hull indicator turn from green to yellow to read

Soldak Entertainment, developer of Drox Operative just posted screenshots of upcoming space game.

Woot.

Whoa, that looks a lot hotter than I expected.

SPAZ is on sale on Steam today.

Considering their previous releases, I agree.

Looks like there is also some kind of Halloween update for it. Steam updated and when you start SPAZ up, the Mod list is set to Halloween. No word on what the content is yet.

Gonna have to reinstall SPAZ now to see the Halloween treats.

I just totally spooged.

Also, I just wrote an article about the old iMUSE music system, thinking it's one reason why many missions from X-Wing and TIE Fighter stick in the brain more than other space games:

Enjoy!

Sword of the Stars 2 is out tomorrow. And I have little to actually do this weekend. Hopefully it will rain all weekend and the little I have to do will be undoable.

Kind of psyched.

You have 7 swim meets this weekend.

Woo hoo! SOTS II!

Sword of the Stars II: I'm getting this confused with another game that came out in the last few years with a similar title. Is it a true 4x game, or is it more like an RTS with a few 4x elements tacked on?

I think it would be more fair to say the opposite: It's a true 4x game with RTS elements tacked onto it, but I haven't played yet, so...
