"Orcs Must Die!" Catch-All

Pages

I hadn't heard of this game, so it was a surprise to me when I caught it on the Pax East floor this year.
Gives me a Monday Night Combat / Tecmo's Deception vibe.

Looks pretty fun. The demo stations were all swarmed at the time I saw it so I didn't get to play it at all.

The site mentions platforms as PC & Consoles, targetting digital download distribution.

Here's the Steam page.

Keeping an eye on this one.

I might be overly reductive on this, but it looks a lot like a tower defense game, just in a 3d space.

Based on the trailer, I'd say there's far more 3rd-person shooting than there is tower defense. It might be a gameplay choice though.

Interactive trailer and it looks quite entertaining to me!

I am now a bit more interested. Seems like it could get really samey, but looks interesting enough I look forward to hearing more.

Weird, I thought for sure I'd already posted seeing as this has been one of my most anticipated games of this year.

Pre-purchase and demo are up now on Steam. Releasing this week on XBL and next week on Steam for $15.

Nice, added to wishlist for now. Downloading the demo.

Impressions? Just from watching the trailer I'm not sure if this game is trying to be a tower defence or something else entirely.

Yeah, video seemed a bit more frantic than I'd like. Getting a hint of Sanctum + Space Marine. Demo downloaded. Will give it a try tonight.

Just played the demo. These are my impressions from it.

Tower defense is definitely part of the game. There is a "tower" to defend (big, glowing, blue rock/orb thing) which the orcs are trying to reach.

It does get a bit frantic as the waves of orcs get bigger during each level, but, at least in the demo, it's not so frantic that you feel like you're losing control of the situation. After you've spent your initial money placing traps, you earn money as the orcs are being killed, and you can spend that money to place more traps at any time. You don't have to wait for a build phase.

Orcs Must Die seems more like Dungeon Defenders to me, so I wouldn't use Sanctum as the comparison, because in OMD you're not creating your own maze/path for the enemies to travel on. The level design is static, and you get to place traps around the level. The demo includes a spike trap (large spikes thrust up from the floor), tar pit (slows down enemies), arrow wall (placed on a wall, shoots arrows) and boom barrel (explodes when you shoot it).

Overall, I really like what I played. I'm digging the art style and humor. According to the game's Steam store page, there are 24 levels total (demo contains the first three), several weapons that your character can obtain, and lots of traps to unlock as you progress. I'm quite tempted to buy it now (pre-order). I just wish the pre-order bonus was a discount off the price, like many other games on Steam, rather than an in-game item that I may not use. At $15, I'm still undecided whether to pull the trigger now or wait for the inevitable sale. Although with the great games coming out between now and the winter Steam sale, I'm sure I'll be way to busy playing other games to have the time or desire to play OMD then. So I'm probably leaning towards getting it now.

I just played a few levels now and pre-ordered the game.
Just love to place the traps and also actively kill them all.
Lots of fun. Too bad there is no co-op.

It reminds me a bit of the Wheel of Time game. Although that was vs another player (which reminded me again of Spy vs Spy). So placing all these traps just satisfies this itch I have had since Spy vs Spy.

I played the demo and then pre-ordered. I'd hoped for a pre-order discount, too, but $15 is a decent price and the demo was fun. I can't wait to try out the rest of the traps.

Mostly, I wanted to get my Steam wallet below $60 so I wouldn't impulse buy Rage (I want to buy Skyrim next month).

Demo is definitely fun. I'm not sure how long it will hold up over the full game, but I'm guessing that I'll get at least 1/4 of a Rage's worth of enjoyment out of it.

Man the demo for this was a blast. The traps are fun to play with and the combat is surprisingly well polished for a tower defence game, at least up to Sanctum levels of quality. Definitely going ahead with a pre-order, I just hope the full game introduces some complexity later on to keep me hooked.

Complexity will be more in combining traps and that archers you place, will get attacked as well.
There will also be air units to take care off. Really looking forward to this all

I should note for the tower defense haters that I am one of you. Something about this didn't feel like tower defense. It might be the fact that the Orcs aren't on a set path, or that there's a lot of personality to the orcs themselves. In any case, the demo for this gripped me a lot harder than the demo for Sanctum, which I couldn't even muster the interest to complete.

OMG I cannot believe how fun the demo is. Just pre-ordered it. Its just so fun killing the orcs.

Did anyone even bother with the melee weapon? I'm loving the crossbow to death.

Of course melee is fun. Right mouse click and you sort kick push them all backwards.
What didn't die then, will die in the traps they thought they just left behind

Giant Bomb Quick Look

Looks like a hoot.

Played the first level of the demo this morning on the 360, that was enough to make the purchase. Now I just can't wait to get home from work to play some more!

Played the demo on 360.

Enjoyed it - think I'll probably pick it up. However, I've got loads of games on the go at the moment, and am poor, so it's going on the pile to pick up when it appears on sale at an indeterminate time in the future.

9.0 "amazing", says IGN

This is a single-player game, but you'll definitely get your money's worth from the lengthy campaign ... You must download, because Orcs Must Die.

Watched the quick look and then downloaded the demo. It looks great. Watching a group of orcs get knocked around by your traps is quite satisfying. It plays well too. I'm tempted to pull the trigger. The only negative is that the main character is a poor man's version of Bruce Campbell It's a shame it came out during such a busy time. It's rating a solid 85 on metacritic.

I picked this up on xbla and it is fantastic. The demo gives a decent sample of the mechanics, but it gets much more difficult quickly. By level 5 or 6 I would have to replay them to figure out different strategies. If you are someone who likes to get the highest rating on each level there will be hours of gameplay. I highly recommend it.

Edit: Finished act I of three. Now there are skill trees that add bonuses but reset for each level. This game is tough. The highest rating you can get for each level is 5 skulls (the skulls are also used to upgrade traps) and of the first 8 or so levels I think I have a 5 on the first 3 only. To get a 5 not only do you have to prevent any enemies from getting by, but also complete the level in a specified time. It so much fun though.

Based on the demo, I suspect that you need both. There's certainly weighting though - I was much more weapon dependent than my son, for example, because I was trying to save money and be efficient.

Edit: Though note, that being said, you get twice as many points for trap/minion kills as you do combat kills.

I'm not big on tower defense type games (PvZ being the only exception), but I loved the demo for this. It seems similar to Sanctum, but I didn't care for the Sanctum demo at all. This just had a really good feel to it. I'm planning on picking it up.

I'm looking forward to picking this up when I set aside some time to play it. Tower defense/action is the emerging genre of the last year and a half, don't you think?

And I'm a happier gamer for it.

This game is fricken awesome. It's lots of fun and has just the right amount of unlockable stuff. Almost to the last level now, though I had to drop to "apprentice" difficulty in order to get by a couple of them. Having since gained a couple of key traps/guardians, I'm thinking I could go back and 5-skull some of the ones that were giving me fits.

Before the monsters started eagerly knocking down barricades, my favorite tactic was to use them to create a single column lined with wall traps with archers in the protected, barricaded area. Then line the whole route with tar, sit back, and watch the fully automated defense system go to work.
