Well, I preordered it. Hopefully I can play it tonight. I think I can download it in time if I start it when I get home today. I usually get 1.2-2 Mb/s downloads from Steam. It should be 21,600/1.2/60/60 = 5 hrs.

I just caved. I was going to wait for a better deal, but ... well, I blame nel e nel.

edit: pre-ordered PC disc version from amazon. should arrive tomorrow.

If you had a crappy DSL connection, that would probably be the faster method.

When do reviews start coming in? It's crazy that an id game is actually coming out tomorrow.

It looks like the review embargo is on until 12 am PST.

The only thing currently making me nervous is what was said in this interview:

RAGE: I took the opportunity and looked at the options menu. There were no graphic options beside resolution, brightness, anti-aliasing and GPU transcoding. Is this a limitation of the test version?

"This is a feature of the id Tech 5. The Engine automatically adjusts to your hardware to ensure the best performance and graphics the hardware can provide.

For example: You have a video card with 512MB VRAM, 4GB of normal RAM and a decent processor. Now the id Tech 5 adjusts the quality of the Level of Detail to the available resources. If you have twice the RAM the engine scales dynamically up to it, improves the textures and objects in the far look sharper and more detailed. At the same time the engines tries to keep running at 60 FPS even though this is not also possible – dependent on the situation."

In theory, this sounds completely fantastic. But the fact that I don't think the "auto-detect" setting in any PC game has ever worked properly for me is slightly worrying.

Ugh, when software tries to think for you, you end up with abomination's like Facebook's new "Top Story" nonsense.

Also, Skynet.

Somebody already posted an entry to howlongtobeat.com, saying they beat the game in 15.5 hours.

I'm looking forward to more reviews and impressions, but I'm thinking I should pre-order Skyrim first so that I don't spend my budget on Rage.

Auto-detect is a pretty sweet idea. Sure, no one has got it quite right before, but in Carmack I trust. Just think positively on how cool it would be if it 'just worked'.

The review embargo is driving me nuts though, and is chilling my expectations for the game.

Same thing, really.

I read on a reviewer's twitter that the embargo is up at 9PM PST

I posted this in the week ahead thread. I don't why, but this is my most anticipated game this fall besides Batman. (I've never played an id game) I watched the first two hours on YouTube and it looks great. It seems like a structured/semi-linear far cry 2, with a borderlands skin, and a bioshock level of world detail and atmosphere

EGM says 9.5

I guess my fear was unfounded! This game is good.

Edit: IUMogg beat me to the punch.

One positive review is more than enough for me to pull the trigger on the pre-order. Should I feel proud for this level of self control?

Well, I pre-ordered it today before the reviews. My self control is probably worse than yours. I totally forgot it was being released tonight. Pre-loading now.

Man I wish I had this level of self-control.

Same. I saw it as an FPS in an apocalyptic setting. I knew I was going to buy:)

I can't believe this game is unlocking at 12 a.m. EST. I'm pretty excited to play an id game that's not Quake or Doom.

Other than on-rails FPSs, play time is pretty subjective. There are dudes that will power through the likes of Oblivion in 15 hours so it's tough to translate some internet guy's experience to my own.

I suppose that Rage still might turn into a on-rails FPS but all signs indicates there it has at least some exploration and RPG elements which will add lots of play time for OCD explorers like me.

From the comments section:

RE: the NDA, Bethesda actually gave us a green light to be first (hence their official feeds Tweeting about this review)

So I think you can safely say that this is probably the highest score they've got (at least among the bigger review sites).

I guess I'm a little paranoid about this being a strictly average game, much like Doom III. Which also got pretty decent reviews at the time.

Ars Technica, whom I trust completely, had some comments on the preview -- they said this is by no means another Doom 3. I believe they phrased it something like "id has finally grown up -- this is the real deal".

Post lifted up from meme hell.

Rage should have been released two years ago. Then it would have been the market's hottest games and maybe I was more easily forgive Id Software's overpriced epics of the ancient and somewhat outdated feeling that the game delivers. Sure the graphics are nice, but not so the blame on a DirectX 11-patched Crysis 2 to PC. Gunplay is entertaining, but nowhere near as good as in Halo: Reach, Crysis 2 or Bulletstorm. There will be a bit one-sided at times, Rage fail to engage and transport distances bores. Vehicle physics are also directly ridiculously bad, and despite the glorious glimpses of light and ultra-stylish design stops my ratings on a seven. 7 / 10

More than a few of us really liked Doom 3 at the time.. and still do.

I think I hate myself and self-control. That one walkthrough video with the balloons did it to me. Oh, and all you enabling buffoons.

ign video review is up. 8.5. Biggest complaint is the story.

Here is a sweet Wolfenstein Easter egg. It could be considered a spoiler so I just posted the link.

Not too much of a spoiler - that is in the very first mission of the game.

Sure why not. I pre-ordered right after E3. Apparently I am all too eager to wash away my memories of Quake 4.

Rage is decrypting! Rage is decrypting! Rage is decrypting! Rage is decrypting!

It's at the 28% decrypt yard line.
