Here's another nice flash-based Metroid-vania style game:

Really great game

I had played partially through that, though I never bothered getting all the gems. Not sure it's truly a metroidvania, since there are no powerups / gadgets enabling access to previously inaccessible areas.

Pretty fun, if a bit frustrating.

Wow good thread. Annoyed that Shadow Complex hasn't been ported to PC. But did enjoy the hell out of Muramasa on the Wii. Need more recent entries in this genre to play!

It's great to find this thread! These have always been my absolute favorite games ever, and I've been bummed that nobody seems to make them anymore - aside from Cave Story, which is amazing. If there was a good 2D Action / Adventure / RPG on XBLA I'd buy it immediately. But there doesn't seem to be, so... I decided to develop one. I've been working on it for 8 months, and this is what it looks like so far:

http://youtu.be/7ftl2xahTCU

Emphasis is on exploration, a continuous world with unlockable areas and backtracking, using tools, weapons, and shields, big bosses, interesting AI, fast action, powerups, classic RPG leveling, characters and story. It's set in the late neolithic (about 10,000 years ago) and the setting is loosely based on ancient Sumerian culture and religion. The game follows the main character through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. My dream is to someday make it onto one of these Metroidvania lists

So, other games I consider to be in this overall genre that I don't see on the list: Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Lagoon, Soulblazer, Terranigma, and Illusion of Gaia for the SNES. Crystalis, Blaster Master, and Battle of Olympus for the NES. Personally, I always think of Crystalis as the granddaddy of the Action RPGs.

Someone click on that link for me

I double post for iPads

Does Terraria count?

Supposedly, Aliens: Infestation, due out on the DS on 10/11 is a pretty good Metroidvania. It was made by WayForward, the studio behind Contra 4 and the Wii remake of A Boy and His Blob. I'll at least give it a look based on that.

Ooo, thanks for the tip! Did you play Monster Tale? A little too simple, but still a pretty fun Metroidvania-lite game.

I haven't. I'll have to add it to my list.

Wow, this thread has been dormant for almost a year!

It wasn't even on my radar, but I happened to glance at the Quick Look for Dust on Friday and bought it forthwith. For those like me who live under a rock, it's a good, traditional MV game with a pretty satisfying combat mechanic, crafting, sidequests, etc. Seems pretty great so far. (The in-game % says I am 18% through it.)

EDIT: Also glad I revisited this thread, as I totally forgot about the Aliens game!

And because this is a thing we have to do nowadays, have a look, vote for it on Steam Greenlight if you want, Chasm.

Looking forward to Dark Matter:

The game aims to craft its own niche in the pantheon of side-scrolling exploration and combat games (yes, we’re really trying to not say ‘Metroidvania’)...

Greenlight here.

Thanks guys. Greenlight thumbs-up given.

A.N.N.E is a combo metroidvania + 2d space shooter. And it looks like they're integrated, not just alternating game modes:

The Kickstarter.
Greenlight entry.
GOG Wishlist entry.

Thank you for the links. That looks pretty awesome(I like shmups too), although the art style is a little cutesy.
edit: and yet I'm still thinking the $75 pledge limited to the first 250 people looks like the best deal.

I would add Scurge: Hive onto that. Originally a GBA game ported to the Nintendo DS, it was a pretty creative variant on the Metroid style of game that kind of fused it with some Zelda elements. I dug it.

How is that? I downloaded a demo, but it didn't seem to want to work with my connected 360 pad. I haven't spent any time attempting to get it working.

SNES Demon's Crest should make it on the list.

Hardcore gaming 101[/url]]Demon's Crest begins with Firebrand escaping his prison in the coliseum, and setting out to recover the crests and claim vengeance upon Phalanx. All the while, he's being hunted by Arma, the general of the demon army, who carries several of the fallen crests. Firebrand's options at this point are limited, however, as many obstacles lay in his way that can't be passed without the power of the crests. Demon's Crest has a similar structure to Metroid and the more recent 2D Castlevanias in this sense, as each power-up you find opens up new parts of the world.

Do you have any other controllers / xinput devices installed/plugged in? I know Dark Souls would not recognize the 360 pad if you did.

Hm. Not that I know of.

I'll have to revisit this at some point. It certainly looks like something I'd want to play.

I generally enjoyed the demo but was left feeling like it lacked something.

Dark Matter is now on Steam from yesterday.

Seems pretty cool so far.

The only question that remains is whether I want to be in the beta or not.
I like new art as much as I like new mechanics.
Then again I've bought almost every 2D castlevania that exists (incl. Harmony of Despair), so clearly I can look at the same art for years and years

I checked back a couple of pages, but didn't see this one mentioned. Nice looking 2D metroidvania-esque title. ~21% raised with 25 days to go.

Still, look at it, look at it!
OMG.

Aha! I knew there was a metroidvania thread around here somewhere! Good show, Roland.

Nice thread, thanks for the recommend, Roland. Holly Knight looks really pretty, I hope it meets the goal and gets made.

Some suggestions for the list: Valdis Story, Unepic(meh story but metroidvania gameplay), Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Mercenary Kings and all of the Shantae games.

Edit: Also there's a Metroidvania tag on Steam that has some debatable games on it but ultimately is a nice collection of the genre.

Hollow Knight is still ~10K from being funded, but they've added some stretch goals:

It's already greenlit on steam, but who knows how long it'll take to complete if they don't get their funding?

Oh, they've also added the ability to pay with PayPal (on their site), and some watercolor / print reward options.

Metroid + Contra =

Trying to nail down a Castlevania game for DS and I can't decide. Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, or Order of Ecclesia. I've heard DoS is the most like Symphony of the Night so I'm leaning that way. Plus I really want to play them all eventually, so doing it in order seems like a good idea. Any recommendations?
