FF2011: GWJFFLX organization thread

Pages

This thread will be used to get the new league up to speed and in working order after which weekly updates will be found in the usual place. We'll also use it to discuss GWJFFLX-specific items and issues throughout the year.

First, the concept (from here).

A 16-team, 4-division league with a twist. The format will be similar to the current GWJFFL as far as scoring, FAAB, etc., but...

The draft will have just two rounds - one up and one back. In the first round, you will draft the entire starting lineup of an NFL team. This will get you 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 FLEX, 1 TE, 1K, and 1D. In the second round, you guessed it, another 10 players. So the first pick might take, for example, the Colts and get...

QB Peyton Manning
RB Joseph Addai
RB Donald Brown
WR Reggie Wayne
WR Austin Collie
WR Pierre Garcon
FLEX Anthony Gonzalez
TE Dallas Clark
K Adam Vinatieri
D Colts

Then, the other 15 managers will pick... and then pick 15 more in reverse order... and the guy with the first pick ends up with the 10 starters from whatever team is left. If that team is, for example, the Bills, the owner may choose to take the third RB instead of fourth WR as their flex.

Finally, the FAAB budget will be $150 but you'll have to use part of it (up to $50) to bid for draft slots. The catch is... the draft will happen far enough in advance of the regular season to allow at least two rounds of waiver wire bids for customization. The cap for pre-season waiver wire bids is $50 minus whatever you bid for your draft position. I'll set them to that amount after the draft and then add $100 to everyone's balance at the start of the regular season.

After the draft, the league will progress just like every other GWJFFL league.

More to come. (Keep reading.)

The X is for whatever you want it to be but officially, it's there to indicate the experimental nature of this format in the tradition of the X-planes.

The X-planes are a series of experimental United States airplanes and helicopters (and some rockets) used for the testing and evaluation of new technologies and aerodynamic concepts.

Changes from the original concept that I'm currently considering:

1. Instead of bidding on draft slots, I'm thinking that we'll just auction off all 32 "packages" much like the way that GWJFFLK uses an auction draft to draft individual players.

2. I'm thinking about making this a dynasty league. Although we'll reset and re-draft next preseason (if this league comes back), what if we went dynasty moving forward?

From here:

Dynasty Leagues
Dynasty leagues are for the serious fantasy football owner and require a commitment over multiple seasons. After the initial draft in a dynasty league's inaugural season, players remain on the same roster from one season to the next unless they are traded or released. Each year after the initial season, a draft is held for rookies only, so fantasy owners must be more in tune to the talent in college than an owner in a standard draft league.

This type of fantasy football league also allows owners a more realistic experience managing a franchise as they must take into consideration how each transaction affects the future of their franchise.

Keeper Leagues
A keeper league is sort of a combination between a standard draft league and a dynasty league. Each preseason, most of the players are drafted, however, owners are allowed to keep a predetermined number of players on their roster from the year before. Most league rules allow only a handful of players to be retained by each team from year to year.

2a. If we go dynasty, should we deepen the bench a bit? I'm thinking it might make sense to add 2 or 4 slots.

It's not something we need to decide right now; just food for thought.

I don't think we'll get this put together in time to start play for week 3 so plan on being ready to go for week 4.

Thanks for X-plane-ing that.

I'll just show myself out.

No dynasty, teams turnover way too much. Imagine if someone picked Indy last year, they would be totally fooked this year.

Remember that if it was dynasty, the "pick the whole team" would be just for the initial draft and you could be building (i.e. diversifying) your team through free agency and waivers all year. I'm not sure how not being dynasty would mean that whoever picked (or got stuck with) Indy this year would be any less fracked.

Admit it, you picked it because the X makes it sound cool.

I'm in or will fill in if someone wants to drop.

I'm for making it a dynasty league. It definitely creates more of a challenge in crafting your team from year to year. If we decide to make it a dynasty league, I think it would be a good idea to increase the roster size by 2 to allow more room for rookie prospects (or washed-up veterans for any Dan Snyder wannabes).

X always makes things sound cool...

That's what the guys in marketing told me.

I'm strongly leaning this way but considering that next season is a redraft for sure, we'll keep the roster at twenty this season to see how it feels with the same roster size but four additional teams.

I'm down for whichever type.

Stupid ESPN refuses to admit that my Postal Code is actually my postal code.

PM me your email address, new guy.

Hey Grump, think we are drafting this week, or next?

I want to be able to start play next week so the sooner the better. Given that there are only 32 slots to be drafted, it shouldn't take too long...

...but if people don't get signed up, I'm going to just scrap the whole thing for this season. Still missing 6, including *Legion* and Boogle and the coffee grinder.

Sent you an email with my info Grumps

Sent invite to Pigpen since Chasely never sent me his email address. Counting that one, there are 5 outstanding invitations. If this doesn't come together by tomorrow, I'm going to just postpone until next season. I'll keep the league in ESPN just like it is now so whoever has already accepted will definitely (and already) be in next year, assuming you're still interested, of course.

I just checked and my invite went to spam so that may explain it. I'll sign up when I get home.

edit: Signed up.

Dynasty seems like a bad idea for this kind of league. After a year or two, it will be pointless that we started with a draft of a "Real Team" since free agent pickups will have taken over and mixed in so much.

Two invitations remain to be claimed.* Any thoughts on how we should facilitate the draft? I don't think I want to try to coordinate a real-time with 16 people... but an auction doesn't really work via slower methods. Perhaps I'll just go old-school and random-number a snake draft for this since it's just the beta anyway.

Edit:

Yes, that was basically me thinking out loud.

Given the late start, the draft will be random-number order and conducted online, either in this thread or, if I decide to get fancy, a linked Google Doc.

Sorry! I'll sign up today.

Don't make me turn this car around.

Should we do an email draft instead of on the forum? I doubt we will get every pick in by tomorrow doing it this way since not everyone checks these threads all the time. Having a giant email thread that we limit to picking teams might be quicker...

Anyone want to trade out of positions 4-8 for my position 12 and 21?

Either way is good for me, but an email draft *might* go quicker, with updates posted here by whomever gets here first whenever the next person is up along with the person whose pick it is.

Elliottx with the 1st overall pick selects:
San Diego Chargers
QB: Phillip Rivers
RB: Ryan Matthews
RB: Mike Tolbert
WR: Vincent Jackson
WR: Malcolm Floyd
WR: Patrick Crayton
Flex: Randy McMichael
TE: Antonio Gates
K: Nick Novak

I'm not authorized to circulate everyone's email address.
