Impulse Ray Emitters are terrible in X3!

X3 is.... Well X3 drove me nuts. Yeah. I said it. X3 drove me freakin' bananas. A half-hour of mindless driving in order to mine a rock? (And that's with x10 game speed enabled) Agh! I put 20 hours into that game, wrote a paper on space physics and 82-keyboard commands and what did I learn? That I wouldn't use a cheat guide to tell me where the 100,000,000 space credit ships were hiding just begging to be claimed and sold.

All I wanted was to blow stuff up real good.

By the way on a completely different tack will X3 have a sequel? 'Cause I would so buy that. #gluttonforadversity

Spoiler:

back on thread and living the dream baby!

Are you being serious? X4 is announced and scheduled for Q4.

I'm all for SOTS2 as long as they cut down the flight time for missiles. It got really aggravating when they would soar to the very top of the battlefield and take ages to come back down and probably miss.

They aren't very good but they are dirt cheap - that's what I used in Tormeted Teladi but I think I got PACs at some point and at some point. I managed to upgrade my ship (Harrier Hauler - horible) with a captured Yaki Fujin (much better) . I can't recall what I used at the end but I made the 2.25Mil by being a combination of used car salesman and a repo-man/con-man.

I told someone that X3 either grow on you or scare you away with it's learning curve . It's not such a hard game - the combat is relatively easy compared to Evochron Mercenary . The main Advantage of X3TC ( probably the most user friendly X game) is that you can do whatever you want whenever you want and usually there are relatively minor consequences (though I heard making the humans angry is a bad idea).

I updated our X-Rebirth thread recently but there isn't a lot of info about the game. If you scroll to the bottom there are a few links that may interest you including Gamescom presentation (German with English subtitles )and link to a forum thread on egosoft forum that list all the things that are known about the game.

THIS YEAR!?!!? ZOMFG!

I've been getting into Star Ruler lately. I saw this RPS article about it and decided to try it again. Originally, it had lots of graphics bugs and ran poorly on my laptop and I couldn't stick with it. It seems they have put a lot of work into patches and it runs fine on my machine now. While it still is complex at first glance, the tutorial flows pretty well and by the time that was over I felt confident jumping into things.

More than anything, I just wanted to mention it so anyone who may have picked it up cheap (as I did) might consider giving it a second look.

Is Star Ruler less or more work to learn to play than Sins?

more

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more

If I'm not mistaken they are both RTS. I only got Sins because I heard it was good and Stardock took anti DRM stand at the time . I thought it's a good idea to send them cash. At some point of time (years later) I learned how to play it and it was kinda fun but a little mindless . It's not too hard to find out the right mix of ships and then create a gigantic fleet that crashes anything in it's path. It's still pretty challenging . I didn't get the expansions.

Star Ruller seemed like more of the same so I didn't bother getting it. I'm not a big RTS fan.

Star Ruler is an RTS like the Europa Universalis games are RTS. Yes, there is a clock and it is always going (except when you pause it). Things move in "real time". But you can pause any time and give orders. Plus there is a scope and depth to rival most any turn-based grand strategy space 4x game.

Sins is much more like a traditional RTS. It is more "clicky" and waiting for cooldowns/stuff to get built.

I've done a 180 on Star Ruler; when it first came out, I didn't care for it much. But the devs have really supported it and it is a much better game now.

Star Ruler has sat on my hard drive installed and never played now for months. It may be time to rectify that.

It's pretty fun. I think the UI is a little denser than it could be and the learning curve is steeper than Distant Worlds (a similar, albeit less deep, game) but there are a lot of cool things you can do once you've teched up, like build Dyson spheres, Death Stars, and stellar annihilators.
The tech tree is semi-random so, when you start a game, you aren't quite sure what an optimal tech strategy might be until you've done a good bit of research. Also, you have to pay research for "leaps" (I think that's what they are called) that may (or may not!) either open up new parts of the tree or link disparate parts of the tech tree together to give you new and different stuff to build. I think how they do the tech tree is brilliant.
There is a lot of automation available as well (and you will need it, even a small game is pretty big) and the automation is actually pretty smart.

Woo and hoo. Soldak, creators of Din's Curse and some other fantasy game not quite as fun are coming out with a space title.

Drox Operative

It's got no pictures so far but it does have delicious words:

# Explore a dynamic and evolving galaxy
# Explore a unique sector of the galaxy in every game, with different "monsters", ship components, quests, and even races
# Fight in the galactic war between the various alien races
# Battle hundreds of different enemy starships
# Build the coolest and deadliest starship in the galaxy
# Outfit your ship with thousands of components and crew
# Adventure with your friends with co-op multiplayer

This is my favourite bit:

"...build the coolest, deadliest ship in the known universe."

Ach! Foiled again!

EDIT: I guess it pays to mention this on the space thread too. So, only half-foiled.

I think there's value in it. We have catch-alls for tons of games that have been mentioned, and the point of this thread is to essentially be a list of all those games in the common theme. Personally, I usually don't scan the new threads very often but I do always follow up on my subscribed threads like this one. So well done, sir. Well done.

Yeah we have a couple of specific TV show threads, but we have one big one for everything. Links tell people where to branch off for more popular titles.

Same with the JRPG thread, there's links in it to Disgaea or whatever other new thing is out.

This space thread has been great too. Lots of games I hadn't heard about before. And helpful links to go more in depth if so inclined. Good times.

Sorry, didn't mean to foil you. I just wanted to let people know there's a catch-all thread, too.

And I'm sold.

Reposting this here because I forgot to earlier.

Blockade Runner

http://www.blockaderunnergame.com/Pr...

Here is the basic rundown as I understand it:

1. Space trading/adventure game.
2. Ships are constructed out of blocks, each block has a specific use and reacts differently to things like damage.
3. Ship get cut in half? Pray you are on the half that has air.
4. Uses a donation model whereby the free version lags behind the paid version in terms of content by 2-3 patches.

Its essentially minecraft in space. The focus is reportedly more on coop combat, though there is mining.

I swear someone posted about that earlier. It has a lot of promise (shooting holes through ships looks cool), but like Terraria I need to see a more complete game before I buy in.

Yes we do have a catch all. The game is quite early in development so there will be more to talk about in the future.

Anyone else excited for Nexus 2?

I can't remember if I had posted this in here or not, but with the recent discussion about Star Ruler, I always go back to the guest review on Flash of Steel (as it's short and sweet). Note that it was posted about a year ago now, so the game is in an even better state than when he posted, but I think he gives compelling reasons to play the game, warts and all. Hell, he even mentions Sins, which seems apropos to our current discussion.

That sort of looks like someone is trying to 3D-ify Captain Forever and brethren.

Yes! I was totally thinking about that, but I couldn't remember the game.

Tamren wrote:

I quite enjoyed the first one, especially for $15 I paid for it. Except the final mission. That was a bit unnecessary.

That. Looks. Awesome.
