I'm surprised that there's not more activity in this thread. This looks to be a great game at a really great price, we need to spread some awareness people!

Personally, it seems like a nice enough game, but not a great one worth rushing out for. I guess I just have different game buying priorities (RO2 for less). Also at what point does anyone 'need' to evangelise for them, that's what they buy advertising for. If it doesn't catch people's attention, and it's not as though HR has had a low profile, then I don't think astroturfing is the way.

When people become like me and believe that marketing is 5 parts of misinformation to 3 parts of truth. I rely pretty heavily on word of mouth.

Astroturfing? really? As I understand that term, it means to create the illusion of public support, usually by a company or organization paying people to fake their support (e.g. paying prominent Digg members to use their influence to promote a digg submission).

What Monarca is suggesting is very different. It's genuine support. This outfit is small and unassuming (in a world of EA's, Activisions and Ubisofts), and I imagine has a very limited marketing budget anyway. When people believe in a product and the philosophies of it's maker, why not spread the word? Here's a small company making a game on a platform we love, not some sh*tty port from a 360 game, with the old-school features PC gamers love, and you want to pooh-pooh an effort to spread the word? Sheese.

If more people know about the game, it will sell more, and we'll hopefully see more games built with this philosophy being made.

What I was getting at was that you shouldn't have to tell people to evangelise, if they are genuinely enthusiastic they should do it anyway, as a natural part of being enthusiastic.

My feelings with HR is that despite the developer saying "it's like an old-school PC game" (targeted marketing) it's only a so-so game. I'll pick it up eventually, but I'm in no rush.

I can't wait to play tonight! (assuming I can break away from Dead Island)

He encouraged people to spread awareness, not evangelize. Granted, right now it's on a big banner on the front page of steam, but that won't last long.

Interestingly, the release announcement says they've already implemented several changes based on demo feedback including FOV adjustment, more checkpoints, a fast menu option (which will make many of us here happy) and some other stuff. Very cool to see these get added in so fast. I've got it downloading at home now. If I can finish up Space Marine tonight, I'm looking forward to starting it.

That's the kind of thing that makes me respect developers like this. They actually listen and make changes based on gamers' feedback. I realize not all developers can do this so quickly (publisher constraints), but I love it when it happens.

Dead Island sorely needed options like this (FOV, missing vsync, disabling multi-player popup msgs, etc), and it took modders to get it done.

Yup. This is why I'm gonna buy this game pretty soon, even though I'm not that big of a fan of the old style shooters anymore. The demo was fun (ads only for smart people lol) but not the type of thing I'd go out of my way to play.
I was also daydreaming that I was playing Prey 2 for a second there.

Playing the game on Insane, have to say, it's challenging and a ton of fun. Forces you to take extra time looking at the levels, to make sure you use the environmental hazards in the most effective way possible. Added bonus: levels are really pretty.

Looks and plays awesome, just like in the demo.

Hell, I've been having trouble on normal difficulty, finding I need to use the environment to my advantage to survive. Can't imagine how I'd survive on insane!

I'm playing on 'easy'. Hey man, I just wanna shoot some robots! Played for about 90minutes last night, really liked it. Great diversion from Deus Ex HR, which is like a good and long novel, this is like a Dean Koontz or Dan Brown <200page thriller.

Whoa, are Dan Brown novels pop-up books? Because the textures in Hard Reset, they sure pop.

Spoiler:

Ba-dum-pssh!

As for playing on Insane, it's not super frustrating. Died a few times, but always because I messed up my back-pedaling, and strayed too close to an exploding barrel, or was so focused on a Gorilla bot I failed to notice a herd of saw-bots chewing my ass off.

The game is pretty linear, and the AI is pretty straightforward (for now), so it adds value if I approach this like an arcade-shmup, where I need to know when stuff comes, from where, what the safe places are and how to time my weapon switches.

Also, grav-grenades are super useful to maximize environmental hazards. Just lure the hordes as so they pass near something harmful, toss a grav, then toss a regular grenade, bam, Pissed Off, Retirement, Overkill, Revenge unlocked

I finally had some time to play it and damn, what a ride!
I like this game so much. Pretty much everything was said already about amazing visuals, about pleasant simplicity, about interactive environments, about fun weapons. It is all there, and if you didn't - make sure to check this one out.
It has a flavour of pc gaming in the late 90's. Don't know why.

edit: oh, and shotgun is kick-ass.

I put in 1.5 hours or so and finished levels 1 and 2. It's pretty fun. I think I'll play it in small doses since it's apparently short. Game looks great. For what it's worth, I like the animated main menu. I didn't find it annoying, and it's not like you're in that menu much.

Ok, beat level 4 on normal and decided I was doing myself a great disservice by only having achievements pop up for 2 difficulty levels at once instead of 4, so I went back and restarted on Insane. Beat level 2 last night, and Insane is the right way to play (in my opinion). On Normal I was generally ignoring the environmental elements and just throwing ammo at the baddies until they died, but now on Insane, I'm making sure I know exactly where every explosive and electrical component is in each area. It feels so good!

Precisely I also beat level 2 last night.

Spoiler:

That hangar fight at the end was a Female Doggo. But once I mastered the "tango the gorillas while blasting the shooters" - using Grav Grenades to control the big monkeys and the alternate charge-shot on the NRG to snipe the shooting dudes, I gave that nodding smile, telling myself, "you da man!"

Thanks for thumbs up, I was suspecting the same as the game was worringly not challenging on normal during first 4 levels and I was thinking about doing the same. I'm not saying I didn't die. I'm saying I didn't die often enough.

Btw, did anyone focus specing all points on shields/health/trauma pack instead of weapons?

The non-weapon mods just don't really seem all that necessary to me... I haven't spent a single point in that category yet.

On a related note, when do the locked mods open up? Is it when you spend enough points in that particular category, or when you spend enough points in general across all categories?

Just wanted to bring this thread back from the dead to say I just finished this game and loved it. The guns kept getting more and more fun and satisfying to use and the increasing progression of enemy swarming / environmental hazards was good. There were a couple tough spots, but once I adjusted my methods, everything usually worked out. I actually liked the final boss fight too. The one a couple levels earlier was a bit awkward since I didn't have any guided weapons at that point. That one was:

Spoiler:

the statue of Atlas infested with nano-machines.

So, I had no idea Hard Reset: Extended Edition was a thing. Supposedly, it's releasing this month, but to retail only? I can barely find any info on it, and even the game website says nothing about it.

Anyone know anything else about this game?

I think I read the extra content would be patched onto the current version.

I believe someone posted otherwise earlier in the thread ... and made no sense to me. Patching it in for peeps makes more sense.

Sorry, I misremembered. The dev said it would be available on Steam. Sounds like just a paid expansion.

I really enjoyed this game. I thought the atmosphere was one of its finest points, and I'm not sure that gets mentioned enough. Very Blade Runner and legitimately scary in parts (the hospital was quite creepy).

"Exile" DLC coming very soon, and it's free for existing owners:
