Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad (RO2)

Anyone have any tips for playing marksman? I can't seem to hit a thing, is there bullet drop off or something to account for? I'm used to tearing it up as a recon in BC2, playing as a marksman in this is ... humbling.

I believe there is drop off, but your sights are calibrated to offset that at the range most sniping occurs ( somewhere before the haze of battle fully obscures targets). For stationary targets, just line up their helmets on the point of your scope and fire. For moving targets... Well, that's always going to be difficult. My advice is to anticipate where they are going to be .5 seconds from now and shoot there. My other advice is to just save ammo and leave the mobile targets for the assault and machine gun class. Snipers shine taking out stationary classes that think they are in good enough cover.

I honestly have difficulties hitting stationary targets, let along moving ones.

Still, I was terrible in BC2 to begin with as well, might just need some practice. It's just particularly disheartening knowing someone else could probably be doing a much better job as the marksman than me while I'm learning the ropes.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think anyone gets mad anymore if someone else has taken the marksman slot. Plus, if you're really doing poorly, someone on your team might get a field promotion and take the marksman slot away from you anyway. Just part of the game

I just wouldn't play as the marksman. You get way more points by capturing stuff. There's a reason they only allow one or two marksmen per team.

And the little I've played the marksman it seems there's less dropoff in RO2 than there is in BFBC2. And it's much harder to see where your bullet goes if it isn't followed by a blood splatter.

Oh, there's a bullet splash. I was following an Assault trooper yesterday when I paused in cover. He went another 10 yards or so out into a street and was struck in the head by a bullet, which sprayed blood out about a yard to the opposite side...

You guys are not making it easy for me to ignore this game.

You can start to pre-load the game now.

Great, there was a patch today and now I can't log into any map without crashing.

Well, the amount of points you get really depend on how aware the sniper is of capture zones. Shooting into and out of zones nets you enough points to put you at the number 2-4 spot, but if you're just a camper at some random spot in the map, even with 15+ kills, you would still be at the bottom of the scoreboard.

Good point.

At the moment, I'm a camper at some random spot who gets one kill if he's lucky.

I think I probably just need some practice, I've managed to actually get a few kills with the scoped rifle now, it's just awkward compared to the high-powered scopes I'm used to in other games. I've definitely learned how to both get kills and contribute to the team in a meaningful way in BC2 as a recon, I imagine I can manage it here once I've got a few more games under my belt.

You guys are more than welcome to use my server. Currently it's 32 player high realism (but not full realism) and cycling through the TE maps.

server address is hark.game.nfoservers.com:7777 (you can join at console by typing 'open hark.game.nfoservers.com:7777)

I might be increasing to 48 slots if enough people are interested.

You say until you get killed by Hark... over, and over and over again

I just need to make sure he's on my team.

Preloaded and ready to go. Good thing I have this thing called work to do right now otherwise I'd be one of those annoying people going "why can't Steam unlock at midnight?!? waaaaaa"

Grrrr, the release was just pushed back 2h.

+1, I think this means I am buying this game.

Well, after Robear's pimping this game out last night over BBQ, I'm not sure there's any way I can avoid buying it at this point.

Release was pushed back a few hours, you still have time to ave some $$ with a preorder.

Checking this thread my prove detrimental to my finances.

Anybody care to weigh in quick on the deluxe digital content? I don't play killing floor or TF2 as much as I used to, and I have no idea if those in game gun unlocks are staggeringly powerful or something.

Never mind: seems like it's biggest benefit was getting in on the beta, which has now passed.

I got it just to have access to the beta. Don't really know what version of the weapons we were using in the beta since the unlocks/perks and all that jazz weren't implemented. I don't believe we were using the version they're showing on the Steam page.

Also, it looks like the weapons are all unlockable through playing the game though, I think.

Damnit. Just an hour to decide, and Gears of War 3 coming next week! And here I thought I was safe from conflicting titles during the fall season.

Pre-load is being updated. Take note if you don't happen to have Steam running right now as you'll have to update when you get home. 2.5 gb download.

when they plan on releasing this?

2 hours in the future. No matter what time you ask

Tripwire said that it will be released sometime today with no specific time in mind. They said the Steam counter was never based on a projected release time. It looks like the same deal as the beta release, they are working on the game until the very last minute. So it is a matter of getting it finished. Or Tripwire pushing it out in desperation when they run out of time and then patching it tomorrow, I'm pretty sure this is what happened with the beta.
