Driver San Francisco Catch-All

Pages

I did a search for a thread on this, but I couldn't find anything apart from Certis' front-page piece.

I only found out about this recently and was excited by the potential of its 'you can take over other drivers' mechanic, but have been left feeling ambivalent. Me and Danjo played the SP demo and did a quick look video along with Lupus. Danjo didn't like the demo at all and Lupus, after watching my gameplay, was ho hum about it. I'm wondering if the game will be saved by the multiplayer. I think it's releasing very soon, so I'm not sure how it's going to do. Looks nice enough - at least when you're driving fast.

I'm a bumpin' this. Really liked what I saw at E3 and Elysium seems to be loving it so far. Might be a good 360 game for me. Anyone else picking it up?

Tagged. I am still hesitant on this. The demo race turned me off when my AI companion kept jacking things up when I wasn't in control. I would love to hear continued impressions, particularly about how invasive the AI issues are in the full game.

I have it on the way from GameFly, so I’ll be checking it out. I wasn’t too excited about it before, but after reading GiantBomb’s review, it looks like it’ll be a unique take on a racer. They have a good Quicklook up if anyone is on the fence.

I've only played a little bit of this, but so far it's a real treat - especially for someone who has never played the series. The concept is amazing, and the execution so far is very solid. I am trying to figure out if this or Dead Island is my sleeper hit of the year.

I've heard good things about this game and I'd developed some excitement for it. But after the GB quick look, it reminded me too much of Burnout Paradise which I just couldn't get into. More of a Forza guy I guess. I don't like the free-roaming driving games where I have to make split second decisions about where to turn.

THe shift execution is solid, yes. But what niggled me is I had to start planning ahead a bit much in order to hop out and use it against cars threatening me. You'll see in the quick look that the same thing happens to Gerstmann a couple of times.

Another thing, which is personal to me, is that I tend to drive using the in-car view in games. It's especially good in this one. So in MP games although I was doing the more difficult sort of driving, other players were rewarded by dint of using the 'easier' driving cam. I think I realised that even if I got it that would always be the case and I'd feel, at some illogical level, that that was unfair. Something I mooted was having XP awarded depending on car camera used.

I'm really digging this. Didn't know about it until Certis mentioned it on the podcast. I was going to pass on it for now and wait till a discount but I just got back from a week in San Francisco and wanted to see how well it represented the city Very accurate so far. Just not as many crazy people on the streets.

I really enjoyed the hour or so I played last night. The ramp-up to learning your "powers" makes more sense in the full game than it did in the demo. It's just fun jumping into new cars to bash people you're racing against and then jumping back into your own car again to zip by.

Haven't tried multiplayer yet, but I'm looking forward to it!

In. I only played the first hour last night, but I want something approximating the joy of Midtown Madness 3's online experience. Hopefully I'll have some time to try it soon.

After spending quite a few hours with Driver: San Francisco, I have to say that I've been totally surprised by how good it is. It's so weird that it works. The driving is solid, the missions are varied and unique, the story is actually interesting and well told, and the shifting mechanic feels totally liberating. Plus, I'm finding it to be incredibly polished in most every way.

So, yeah, it gets my recommendation. It came out of left field, but I'm glad I've been playing it lately; its arcadey feel makes it the perfect accompaniment to longer, more-involving games.

Anyone else shifting around in the streets of San Francisco? Bueller? Bueller?

I'm about 60-70% through the story and I've been trying to clear all dares and activities between story chapters. It really is a great arcade racing/sandbox title and the various challenges and activities have a Burnout Paradise vibe to them which appeals to me.

I've been really pleased with the handling of the various vehicles. After playing the demo I was a bit worried about that aspect, but they've done a good job in the full game of making the different classes of cars fit a good arcade standard for handling, though some of the dirt physics are a bit wonky.

The shifting mechanic works really well, but sometimes its a bit frustrating finding the class of car you want on demand in a specific place. That's easily worked around though.

Definitely an excellent rental.

Ah, Mark sure does love the El Camino.

I'm picking this up at a later date. I'm swamped right now with gaming goodness.

Gotta say, this looks awesome. The video up above probably did more to sell me on the game than anything. I just want to confirm:

On a scale of Burnout Paradise to Forza, the driving is much closer to Burnout Paradise, right? It looked to be quite similar to NFS:Hot Pursuit.

It's arcadey like BP, but has it's own feel. It's nowhere near a sim.

Awesome. It just shot up a bunch of spots on my list to purchase. Maybe not full prioce (as I am firmly in the midst of Deus Ex right now) but later on, most definitely.

That video was pretty damn funny. I now want this too, but I'll patiently wait for Ubisoft to remove the rabid nazi pitbull DRM. Plus, like you, I'm swamped.

Yahtzee liked it, therefore it must be pretty good. Added to my wishlist.

Just finished, fantastic game.

I love how it keeps throwing new things at you;-)

I started this last night and I'm really impressed. The demo didn't wow me but after seeing some good reviews and videos (even Yahtzee really liked it), I gave it a rent and I'm glad I did. The attention to detail in their engine while maintaining 60fps is amazing! When Reflections isn't working with in inept publisher and they actually get budget and time, they seem to be able to do some very impressive work.

I played for 10 minutes at Eurogamer, and went straight to the HMV concession and bought it. I've been hammering it pretty hard, and doing all of the dares, challenges etc between story missions, so it started to get a bit samey, but then some new, more challenging types of mission appeared and the joy was back. This game has made me cackle with malicious glee dozens of times.

It may not be game of the year, but it is the most fun I have had in a game this year.

I got this Tuesday evening (PC version), and yep ... it's as fun as everyone is saying. I've worn a big dumb smile since about 10 minutes in, and it just keeps getting better.

Every year, we get the list of "AAA" titles and think game X, Y, or Z will be the ones that we'll rate the best, or talk about the most, but every year there are surprises, sleeper hits that come out of nowhere and jump on your best of the year list. I think this is going to be that game. Everything about it is just fun.

Do NOT let previous "Driver" titles scare you off, Driver SF is a gem!

The sequel can't come soon enough.

I just got this for Christmas and am about 90 minutes in, and god damn if it's not one of the most fun games I've played in ages. Like Jeff above, playing this has elicited much smiling and giggling thanks to great driving, fantastically funny writing and the amazing shift mechanic which I am just adoring. Can't wait to dive more into this. Anyone else playing, on the PS3 especially?

So I played for maybe 3-4 more hours last night, and the game is just getting better and better. Like Spider above, I've been cackling with glee as to the amazingness and hilarity of this game. This might now be my favorite game on my PS3, definitely my favorite game of 2011.

I just got it for Christmas as well and I'm having the same experience - I keep discovering more ways to manipulate traffic and cause mayhem. It started a bit slow for the first hour or so but it has been steadily building in pure immature fun for the 2 hours after that.

I can't wait to try the multiplayer....

I bought too many other games, I have to wait for a super sale on this. I really want to play it as I really loved the demo. A lot.

Veloxi, feel free to add me on PSN. I may get it for the PS3 or the pc, I'm not sure which yet. PSN name is the same as here.

Are you on the PSN at all? And yeah, it just seems to get more insane as it goes on. LOVE it.

I'm brianrubin on there if you get to your PS3 first. And yay! It's dropped in price to $30 at a lot of places, FYI.

Damn, why didn't you guys enable me on this when it was on sale!

I just got the game for Christmas, don't look at me! Get it now anyway, it's so, so good.

Has it been a daily special yet?
