Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad (RO2)

Tried manually forcing Exit Steam to ensure it's up to date?

Are you trying to join servers running the old maps? They've removed them, so an updated client will fail to connect to an un-updated server. No more Fallen Fighters or Apartments for now.

Also the server browser is apparently broken so that it only shows un-updated servers. You can get to updated servers through the friends, favorites, and recently played tabs. Or join directly through Steam's server browser.

I joined a "favorite" server instead and it worked ok.

yea that worked for me, but i'm still crashing as soon as i pick a side.

I love the new maps, but there are still a ton of bugs that a week before launch have me a bit concerned. I hope they can get the rough corners polished off because the core gameplay is really wonderful.

One other thing I've heard that is some of the high end graphic options can cause crashing on certain computers. Try setting everything to medium and see if that helps.

I agree with you, though I'm doubtful it will be in perfect shape for release. But Tripwire has a good record of post-release support, so I'm hopeful for the long-term.

Setting everything to lowest allowed me to take 5 steps out of spawn. Which is considerable more playtime i've been able to get since this last patch.

Yeah, again, looking at the fustercluck that is the server setup, they are releasing at least a couple months too early. They are shoving it out the door before it's ready.

I'm leaning towards getting this . Any idea when the server will be released and how much renting a game server would cost?

Answer: from gameservers.com, a bit more than $1 per person per month.

So a 16 person server (8v8) is a bit over $16 per month.
Unless I read it wrong.

Camping in the Vent room for an hour or two if anyone is around.

Anyone up for playing tomorrow night? Maybe after 8ish CST?

ArtOfWarCentral is just under $1 per person per month.

How much interest is there in a gwj server for this?

Depending on work (and whether Disgaea 4 take precedence) I may be able to join you tomorrow.

Tomorrow is a plan. Certis Tweeted he might be in.

The latest patch they just put out really cleaned up a lot of the issues I had with this early on. It's much less... plastic now. It feels more real. Buggy as hell at times though.

I played this for a while tonight, the gameplay is solid, but it needs a bit more polish. Think I might wait for the full version now, but I've had my taste and I'm happy with my pre-order.

On that note I wouldn't mind seeing some Finnish.

I've had some *great* moments in this game. Chasing someone into a room only to have a large caliber MG open up on us, bullets flying through the walls and leaving dust and plaster bits in the air as I fled. Hunting an enemy player in a barracks and finally locating him as he took a pot shot at someone through a window. Doing a fire-and-move from one side of a building to another, just in time to see someone enter hunting me in my previous location (saw me fire, I guess) and shooting him from behind.

The sounds are overwhelming, but after a while, you can start to make out footfalls at some times, so you can sort of locate people that way in spite of the din. Sometimes. Soldiers call out when they are stressed or afraid, and shout slogans and reassurances when they need to charge themselves up. (You cannot control this, so you can hear gunfire and "Zey are in ze building" followed by "Bozhe Moi!" and more gunfire.) After a while you can distinguish weapons by sound. Even if you don't hear a shot, you can hear the near miss and see wood or plaster or stone chipping near you, giving a clue that a sniper is in view.

All very atmospheric. This game can leave you suddenly panicked and you find yourself taking a moment to hide in an interior room while your character is literally moaning in fear (artillery can do that.) Quite something.

I'm planning to play at 8PM CST. I'll be in Vent, assuming that's what the cool kids still use.

I'm in there now. All alone.

Edit: Correction, there's three of me now as RO keeps doing something screwy to my internet.

Huh, I always thought that was me moaning in fear.

Lots of crashing last night, I gave up after the third. Sorry Garion. It kept interfering with Vent, too, I suspect Punkbuster was preventing me from talking to someone off-team. Somehow....

Well, I went ahead and restarted my computer after the third lockup from RO2. Things were pretty smooth for me after that and Certis, TheWanderer and I played for a couple of hours. Ranalin also managed to play for a few minutes before he started crashing again. All in all a good time once RO stopped locking up my internet and kicking me from Vent. That was annoying.

I ran fine on the newest map, but when it switched over to that night one i was back to 5 steps and crash.

It doesn't sound like it went too well last night. Anyone going to be playing tonight?

Not me football season starts tonight.

Bugs and whatnot are definitely issues, but outside of some quirks here and there we did end up playing for a good couple of hours.

New patch out. New maps along with it!

I can't play Red Orchestra 2, so I'm building a porch. I'd rather play Red Orchestra 2. Somebody post more screenshots!

Yesterday and today have been good for RO2 play. The key is to find a server that's nearly filled with a decent ping (I like less than 50).

I've gotten comfortable with the Assault role, but not really with Rifleman. I understand Assault better, I think - the complexities of finding a spot to use a rifle from, and of firing single shot against a moving target make rifle much harder for me. Fire and move, or defense at a choke point in movement, I understand that much better. I'm scoring middle of the pack sometimes, with 5-7 kills per game as a cautious Assault. But I do have some hope for the Elite Rifleman role, since that's got a semi-auto instead of the bolt-operated rifle of the regular.

I really, really appreciate the morale system. If someone puts a shot near you, it will rattle you - the adrenaline goes off, you get a bit shaky and your vision starts to lose definition. There's a duration bar with this effect. But that only lasts a few seconds unless more frightening things happen. Artillery does the same thing but much more severely - the best reaction is to hit the ground and wait, if it's nearby it will be completely incapacitating (if it does not rend you limb from limb). Tank rounds and grenades are in-between the two extremes.

What this means is that effects from firing a burst near someone, or tossing a grenade, can discomfit them enough to allow you to follow up with a quick kill, even if they are in a perfect hide and aiming at you. And the same can happen to you. You can't defeat the effects just because you're sitting behind a computer and aren't really rattled. A concussive weapon nearby, or a near miss, will instantly remove your ability to focus on things at a distance, and jiggle your aim, and mess with your hearing as well - all in-game effects. So it's not a cosmetic system; it enforces inaccuracy and encourages you to take a breather at times to recover your calm.

Functionally, this game allows people with not-so-good reflexes to perform well. It also separates the roles very clearly. Riflemen and snipers can operate at a distance, but Riflemen can also fight relatively close up. Assault can on occasion hit someone down the block, but when two enemies come charging into a room firing, the Assault guy is the one you want facing them. It's also awesome for picking off runners.

Tactics really work, too.

When you end up alone on the front lines your adrenaline can kick in sometimes. It's pretty harrowing as your man is basically having a panic attack even if there's no suppression fire. I like that they took the system and applied it to those situations also because in real life I imagine you'd be crapping your pants when alone behind enemy lines.

I can't play the game anymore as it crashes on me whenever I try to enter a match. Oh well. No complaints here, but if this issue continues when the full game is released this week I won't be happy. I want to start leveling up and seeing what goodies they have on offer.

My crashing magically stopped. Completely in love with this current set of maps. Now I'm really stoked for the proper release.
