Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad (RO2)

I believe that patch added a new map. It's a tank-only map. (I'm not a fan)

I'm close to pulling the trigger on this.

I am really enjoying this game. It's very satisfying that I can land shots on someone and they actually die. That has always been very frustrating to me in games like Battlefield where you could empty magazines of high powered assault rifles into other players and they would just keep on going. The rifles feel awesome. Everything except the buggy beta parts scream awesome, enduring, and fun.

So nice, posted twice.

Edit: Some screenshots of a duel between a Russian assault class and German rifleman. The German ended up losing, which is pitiful because of the range involved here.

The park is approximately 150m across (short axis). Playing a German Assault, I popped a guy at 114m who was across a street outside the park on the other side. While I got a 10 honor award for that, the assault SMGs *do* have the range to take someone out at that distance. Hard, but doable (especially as the PPSh has quite a rise when you fire it, it's a pain to counteract.)

Edit - Upon reflection, I'd have put my money on the rifleman, but the ability to put three or four rounds into the area is probably what did it. Clearly the Russian had a good aim.

Actually, that was what was so funny - they both knew where the other one was, and the German had the drop on the Russian (the Russian spent most of his time in cover and was enclosed in a small bunker, where as the German had more freedom of movement), but they both fired at each other for a good ten seconds before the Russian got a lucky stray shot in. It was definitely a facepalm moment, especially when I ended up spawning in for the Germans a second later.

OH, AND HERE IS SOMETHING AWESOME ABOUT THE GAME: If you are playing very well (completing objectives, killing enemies, top of the scoreboard, ect.), the game will occasionally let you "steal" a class from another player. So if your marksman is doing poorly and you are doing better than him as another class, you can become the marksman and force the other player to a different spot. Very very cool.

I'm really enjoying this. Getting to know the maps is nice and fun. Not so much fun when your team tries to hang back and play deathmatch when it's a conquest mode.

The new map with thank battles was fun ... until half the team dropped out.

Loving the beta once I got the empty server browser fixed. The tactical goodness is strong in this one. I'd be up for setting a GWJ server up if there was enough interest.

I've only been able to play on 1 map. Everytime a server changes to something that's not Apartments i crash.

I've been very lucky with stability so far. Stable 64 man server anyone?

The team you beat wasn't very good. No one on your team had more kills than team points, which is why you won with 10 minutes left.

I don't think we won at that point. In TE Apartments, I'm pretty sure the only way the allies lose is if the timer/reinforcement counter runs out. Axis can lose if reinforcements run out or allies take all territories.

(We did win in the end though)

Edit: Fun Fact: As soon as I join a match, while everyone is clicking to be the Allied/Axis sniper, I try to join as the Axis Elite Infantryman. I love the G41 so much. It is as accurate as a sniper rifle at all but the most extreme ranges and is semi-automatic.

It looks fantastic, sadly I don't have a gaming computer so sadly it's a no go for me...

Well, I could probably have put a server up -- I probably wouldn't actually play it that much, but could have set some of you guys up as admins. Unfortunately, they don't plan to release Linux binaries, so that's not gonna happen. Sorry.

edit: I also gotta say that, in looking at what was involved in running a server even on Windows, this looks like a totally half-assed, rushed release.

Oh oh oh oh oh. I thought both sides could take all the territories and win. Interesting.

Fun fact: I like being the machine gunner as I enjoy exploring the maps and finding good spots to suppress people. People seem to prefer the assault-style to machine gunner, which is a more active role since you can run and gun better, but I can always find an open machine gunner slot so I'm happy.

Just got it. Hoping to try it out tonight.

I'ma getting a little bored of the maps they have, but I keep wanting to play more. Good sign.

There is a new patch due out soon (any minute now, Tripwire just sent the files to Valve) that will change the maps up.

I've been playing this for a few weeks now. Trouble is, I keep getting run in with a bunch of pubbies that don't use mics. Can we get a GWJ night together next week and go take over someone's server and be all chatty and tactical? I keep feeling there is something missing with an every-man-for-himself approach. I want to suppress someone, and direct in a flanker to take him down. I'm good any day of the week.

Sweet. I'll hang my cleats up for the evening and come back fresh tomorrow.

We can totally do this. We already have a Vent channel for this exact thing.

Okay, I was searching for this the other day. I have the LOTRO channels for the Landroval server. Where are the Vent channels for GWJ in general? Where's the Vent channel for RO2? I used to have them.

The night map looks amazing, by the way.

Gah, still over a week for the normal version. A GWJ server at launch would be pretty sweet.

Looks like the patch with the new maps is out. RO2 is updating on Steam, 1.1 GB.

Also, there is a GWJ RO2 Steam group you can join.

lol this has been the game with the most problems i've had yet with steam. Reinstalling for the 3rd time.

Gah. Should've turned my computer on earlier. Now I have to wait for this to download. *facepalm*

Edit: Latest update borked the game for me. it crashes immediately upon pressing play.

Re-downloading 180mb after verifying cache.

even after reinstall it says i cant join servers because i've not been updated. verifying cache does nothing
