Dead Island

Can you tell if you get the Steam advertised DLC (i.e. the extra weapon) added when you activate a preorder code from greenmangaming on steam during this earlier pre-loading window? Meaning, does it count the gmg code as a steam preorder?

The codes I've activated on Steam show up as Retail and don't get Steam pre-order bonuses.

Thanks for checking on that. I was just curious. I'm waffling a bit on platform, so although I'm leaning towards pc over 360, I just havent pulled the trigger yet.

Just to be clear, I mean codes for other games, not Dead Island specifically. So my experiences is that codes from other sites aren't in the "Steam" allotted keys so they don't get any Steam bonuses. Might not be the case for DI, but I would be surprised if it was any different.

I dunno, I'm going to hold off on this until I read some reviews/impressions. I heard some demo impressions on Weekend Confirmed, and it gave me a little less excitement.

I have to say I'm interested, it's just another game on the very long wish list.

I preordered this and Batman Arkham City through Green Man Gaming for about $34 apiece. Did that $5 credit thing with Jeff-66 (Thanks!), so hopefully that works as well. It hasn't shown up yet.

If you haven't gotten the email yet you should also be able to access the code by logging into your account, going under "Your Games", and clicking on "Download" under Dead Island. It'll take you to a screen that says it's not available yet, but here's the key required to play the game.

You are right! I activated it.

Just used this code READY-UPDEA-ISLAN to get it on GMG for $33.96. I was going to wait for impressions but $34 is low enough for me to take a chance.

Be sure to sign up for the GWJ Dead Island steam group!

Aw, man. You and the whisky just cost me money. I had $5 in GMG credit so I guess I can't complain for $29 out the door.

At GMG, if you go to "My Games", and hover over the picture of Dead Island, then click on Download, you'll get a page with your Steam code. Input that code into steam and you can pre-load the game now. That is, if you haven't already received the email with your code from GMG.

Re: the steam group. I vote that we make it invite only. We are getting some outsiders, and some of them look like kids.

Ya! Get off ma lawn!

Agreed.

Thirded. Damn kids!

Well can I get an invite now you closed-borders, fence-building, shut-ins.

Two days left and I'm finally pulling my hair out.

I'm saving money for college, meaning I'm not supposed to buy any games at all, but I have enough left over in my " for spending" pile from before summer to buy one $60/$50 release.

So I'm stuck pitting Dead Island against Skyrim. I've filled out the charts, done the math over and over again, and I'm still stuck with two awesome looking games and only one I can buy.

So mainly I'm hoping someone can either talk me into buying Dead Island or out and waiting for Skyrim.

Cheers!

I'd wait for skyrim, Wolfen. Although i'm looking forward to both (and i'll be getting both) i think Skyrim has more staying power and probably more variability. I think Dead Island will be a good game but a bit limited in scope.

If you're saving money for college, you might want to buy the more limited game though. For the sake of your grades

Dead Island is Fallout 3 with zombies. Plenty of people are going to compare it to Dead Rising (as you can create weapons) and Left 4 Dead (as the action is first-person and good for four players online), but when I finally got past the game's obtuse opening and less than stellar cutscenes, I found a world rife with quests, interesting environments, and a character progression system that had me begging for more hours in the day. In short, Dead Island's a rough around the edges role-playing game, and I dug it.

Oh hell yeah.

Can I get an invite to the Steam group? http://steamcommunity.com/id/BNoice

Edit: Jeff-66 sent me one. Is it Tuesday yet?

Just watched the review. Looks good. I wasn't aware of the amount of customization and that there are skill trees so it looks like the game may have some longevity. Hopefully the texture pop-up issues aren't in the PC version.

Dammit, Jeff. Stop that!

Okay, I got an early copy of the game. The IGN review seems fair, but I think the more apt comparison is with Borderlands: A three-branched skill tree, unique weapons, weapon quality defined by color.

It's not perfect, but the up-close combat is pretty damn good. I'll spoiler this little bit:

Spoiler:

You can throw a weapon, and then pull it from the zombie's chest when they get close so that you can use it again

Now THAT'S an unfair quote to read while I'm trying to save money. Does this mean we're going to get journals/diaries to read? Quests that can be completed that don't involve killing stuff? Lots of lengthy dialogue trees?

Any more thoughts from our small cadre of 'early adopters' out there?

No dialogue trees. Just quick conversations that send you out on a mission. The secondary missions are usually pretty simple - get me some water, etc. The main missions are more involved.

I'd get this as well, but I'm not going to get any significant time near my game rig till the beginning of October

Someone invite me, I bought it with that sweet discount code.

I figure if it's actually a good game, people will still be playing a few months from now.

Fallout 3 with zombies.
