From Dust

Terrible controls issues aside, the game is alright. Its hard to recommend, unless you like the novelty of playing with lava. Nothing more fun than accidentally burning down an entire village.

Kind of felt like they lacked some features to stretch the game length. Unskippable cutscenes and no fast-forward button bogged down the pacing. And then there were some levels where I ended up with abilities that I never used. Why would I need jellify when I can evaporate the entire riverbed?

Over the next couple of months, I'm looking at more than a couple weeks of travel, during which internet access is a bit of an unknown at times. Last week I was traveling for work and there are still many airports that don't provide free wi-fi. This is why I'm picky about DRM requirements, because when I feel the urge to play a game, I want to be able to!

Oh Quintin, this is why we're friends. We think the same.

That is my fancy way of saying "Me too!" or "+1" or whatever the kids are posting.

Then why you hurt my feelings by never being on IRC?

They figured out what the website was for and won't let me go there at work.

Gahh, that last challenge was a Female Doggo, but I managed to 200/200 this game.

2 playthroughs got me all of the achievements for the main game. The first is to get all of the legends, as well as 100% vegetation coverage, and the second to go through with less than 5 villages destroyed,

Then through the challenges.

Voila.

Just wanted to say thanks to Gremlin, Hyetal (tusen takk) and others who'd posted here about the limitations of the port, and the forgotten element of fun. I was about to make the purchase on Steam, and decided to come here first. Glad I did.

The server is down for me and won't let me even get past uplay for From dust or for Assassin's creed. I was finally able to assess the ubisoft website and was told to log in only to be informed my login is not allowed.

I was looking forward to playing tonight...

I guarantee you that outage will affect more paying customers than pirates.

Well, no, it will *only* affect paying customers. That's kind of the point of a crack.

10000% guaranteed

Have Ubisoft said anything about tweaking up the game itself for controls and performance, rather than just doing the minimal fixes to the authentication as a patch, or are they just going to leave it to rot?

Has Ubisoft ever had much post launch support for a game? I havent played many except for the Assassin's Creeds on xbox, so I dont really know. I get the feeling that's not their style though.

Hope they do, because some of these changes are easy. The settings menu that takes you all the way back to the main menu whenever you change something? A setting for mouse/keyboard sensitivity? I haven't played with a recent version of DirectX, but I suspect some of the visual changes (like enabling AA) are actually pretty simple as well.

I personally would love the ability to have a bigger map size, shut off and turn on lava or water where I want all while in game. (not including the last level of course)

Some of the levels I love and would like to explore for a longer time, but find myself limited by how quick the lava flows, or lack of certain elements. It would be cool to have greater control incase you want a free roam of the levels you have completed.

The only level where I felt I had all the time in the world was the first on and I played it for well over an hour. I made the delta make spirals around the island.

From Dust was patched today to no longer require any connection to Ubisoft servers, and to store the saved game locally instead of on Uplay.

Now why couldn't they have just done this in the first place...

Zero-day piracy reduction. It literally doesn't matter anymore. People who were going to pirate have already done so. Anyone who would never pirate but haven't bought yet will either buy now, wait for a sale, or never buy at all.

Where's the reduction? You correctly said people who were going to pirate already did it. So what's the point?

"Zero-day" means before or immediately upon the game's release. I'm pretty sure this system is quite effective at preventing that, but I'm also making the assumption that between then and now, someone cracked it.

I interpreted zero day as the day of release, which honestly I doubt it does much for. You're correct, DRM has been fairly (if not extremely) successful in preventing pre-release cracking.

I don't really believe Ubisoft was following The Witcher 2's lead here though, I think they removed it due to the controversy.

I'll be waiting for a price drop. I went from "must have" to "impulse buy".

Great interview with the composer on Top Score:

Anybody know if the PC version is unbroken yet? Was thinking about picking it up.

Unbroken how? It works fine for me, and the DRM has been gone for quite a while.

I know its been a while, but this puppy is on sale on steam and I had heard that there were some issues with it on the PC. Does anyone know if those have been worked out or maybe it's just a matter of using an xbox controller for it?
