Gibbous. It's crazy evocative.

bibliobibuli

(Wordnik's word of the day yesterday).

I'm even more amused that all of their "examples on the web" are from somebody whose handle is "bibliobibuli".

Sanguine

Although, I thought it meant relaxed and philosophical about a situation but apparently that isn't quite right.

It's one of those words that can almost be its own opposite.

So it can mean hopeful, or bloodthirsty. The second I understand, what with the root word meaning "blood", but where the heck does the first one come from?

It's odd sometimes when you've settled on a meaning for a word in your own mind and then find it doesn't mean what you thought or it has an alternate meaning you were never aware of. Crossword puzzles sometimes trigger those kinds of revelations. I'll look a word up, sure it doesn't mean what they are suggesting, only to find the dictionary backs their definition up.

"Bloodthirsty" and "confident" seem to jibe just fine.

It comes from the Humorist mode of proto-medicine.

Catawampus.

I just love the sound of it. It's definition is not what I expected. I expected it to be whomping a cat, but alas, it wasn't.

I mean really, it should have been:

cat·a·wam·pus
   [kat-uh-wom-puhs]
adverb
1.
to whomp a cat: The cat took a wiz on the rug, so I had to catawampus.

Not hopeful; optimistic. "Marked by high colour and cheerfulness"; high colour being rosy - ie, blood-infused - cheeks, maybe?

As he rode into town his britches were dusty and his hat was catawampus.

Fracking: Hydraulic fracturing

News on the radio was talking about fracking this morning and I couldn't help but laugh at some of the things they were saying because all I could think of was frakking. Example here. I'm in the pro-fracking camp.

Oh man— just found this thread and instantly thought of a word wifehaha dropped on me the other day:

Lyophilize

Spoiler:

To freeze-dry

She works in a lab; there's just something hot about the thought of her in her lab coat with protective glasses lyophilizing corn.

Other words high on the list are:
Lambaste
Berserk
Asinine

Least-liked words, or words I cringe when I hear them:
Gravitas
Poignant
Synergies
Moist - never liked it, never will. Gives me the heebie-jeebies.

"At my most bad-ass, I make people want to take a shower."

I can just picture your Avatar saying that.

My current favourite word is BAW.

It is a Lao word that means: No, or to negate a sentence or as a question mark.

eg.
jhao mak baw - Do you like this? With the possible answer - baw

jhao baw mak - You don't/won't like this.

It rolls off the tongue nicely as part of the Sabaidee baw greeting. Makes it a bit Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Bacon.

Me too!!! I've always thought this word should be reserved solely for describing medical conditions/ complaints. So when I hear people use it to describe cake, I throw up a little. Why do people have to ruin cake with their nasty words?!
