Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

I got the demo working, I told my video card not to pre-render any frames.

How the heck am I supposed to use the vengeance launcher? It looks like a grenade launcher, but the grenades almost never trigger on impact. I have no idea how to set them off so whenever I shoot them into a horde of orks I end up fighting orks covered in sticky grenades with my sword, and that just sucks.

Oh and the demo is awesome.

So...is there a reason this game doesn't exist at all on the UK steam store, but *is* on gamersgate/d2d? This game uses Steamworks right?

I think reload triggers the nades. I think. Having to imagine what my fingers do.

I'm still a bit lukewarm on this. The demo was OK, but I don't have much 40k heritage, so it's not necessarily very different from, say, the Gears of War lore for me (I am aware 40k is worlds better, but I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling from just being in the world). The environments were also pretty dull and samey (just like Gears).

The infinite ammo gun was a bit weak (especially on the yellow gun-toting orks), and the other guns ran out of ammo very quickly. I didn't really feel the same awesome that everyone else is feeling somehow. It was gloriously violent, but I guess I found the "press X lots of times, Y then B every so often, and press both sticks to kill everything when the big yellow fist is showing" gameplay a tad thin.

Use 'R' to detonate them.

Has anyone managed to pull an execution move on a Nob? Whenever I try he flips it on me and I get body slammed!

Its a quicktime event...

Took me a while to figure that out. There may be others but one involves a shoving match that requires you to hammer the LMB.

I coulda done without that.

EDIT: The other option is to do the execute move while in fury mode, that puts down Nobz in one shot.

On the plus side, if you're in Fury Mode you never have to jam on the execution button to kill a stunned Nob.

Also, the bull rush is your friend. A good way to get some breathing room when you're surrounded and stun a few green fools while you're at it.

I've tried the demo on normal, and I am just not getting the mouse/keyboard control scheme. I'll persist and hope that it clicks. but I'm not feeling it yet.

Its a little iffy when you want to chain strikes in 4 different directions. Thumbsticks could manage it no problem, but PC controls mean you can only melee in four directions based on where the camera is facing. I got used to it pretty fast.

You guys tried the power axe yet? I walked right past it, I'll have to go back and try it again.

What is there to get? Left, gun, right, melee, wasd to move.

Dude. It's basically left 4 dead.

Edit: Oh. It's because there's no fire, isn't it?

Wanting to play MP? Day one if you want to ride the GWJ wave.

I realized that I like MP more in theory than in practice. I always fully intend to play MP, but then either play it once or twice or not at all. I've pretty much stopped buying games at full price just to get in on the MP early. I'm so lame.

Presumably it will be explained when you pick it up in-game, but here's how the vengeance launcher works:

You can shoot up to five grenades and have them stick.

Firing a sixth grenade detonates the oldest one.

Hitting the reload button (RB on a 360 controller) detonates one grenade, although it's not clear if it's the oldest, or the one in your crosshairs.

Played the first level of the 360 demo last night, was surprised. I have zero history with the Warhammer 40K universe, but combat was fun and visceral, and both melee and ranged were both satisfying.

Welcome to the world of 40K. It is by far my favorite IP of any world/universe created. And I mean leaps and bounds better than any other IP.

I hope you enjoy your stay.

Oh, I am sooooo copying that.

Really brilliant IP hampered by some truly terrible games - I'm looking at you, original tabletop.

I want an actual stamp of this image to carry around with me. To, like, stamp people on their foul heretic foreheads.

I think if you go into certain stationary stores / copy shops that are able to make/order stamps, all you need is a jpg or other compatible picture format and they can do one up for you.

Just sayin', Inquisitor Kincher Skolfax.

My birthday is coming up...this could be a good test of my wife's loyalty to the Emperor.

Also, grounds for divorce.

I think the guns have low ammo to force you to fight. Gears was a shooter with chainsaws. I think this is a chainsaw game with guns.

In terms of the buttons, try think of the system as a highly simplified version of the one in assassins creed brotherhood, trying to go from kill to kill. and I only use the big yellow fist when faced with the mini bosses or if I'm almost dead in the middle of a crowd.

Do read more about he universe though; very interesting stuff, even to someone like me who is only casually interested in it.

If it still doesn't please you after that, ditch it. I'm not surre there will be anything else to th game.

Agree with 1Dgaf above. I've read that they intentional included a clip of a SM smashing through his own cover in their trailer as a metaphor for how Space Marine will be more close combat oriented game than something like Gears of War.

Finally played the demo via that sneaky steam link that got posted...

They had me at the Squigs

The guns are just something to do with your time while you charge into close combat.

I get destroyed in close combat every time so far. My son was watching with disbelief, "You're dying. Again."

I was humiliated. Maybe I'm more Imperial Guard than Space Marine after all. Expendable.

That's because you didn't get the health gaining mechanic yet. You finish the bigger part of the crowd, then the remaining ones you stun them and finish them off

Oh and it's best if you keep your fury for mini boss encounters.

Strewth wrote:

On the higher difficulties you need to be constantly thinning out the crowd with gunfire whenever you have the opportunity. Any time you have a moment or two to snap off some shots, you should do so.

I liked the demo, but I'm wondering if anyone else found the environments in the demo really bland? You can see all sorts of interesting gothic stuff off in the distance, but every environment you are actually tromp around in seemed lackluster. Mostly brown or grey, boxy, with boring textures and design. The characters, animations, and pretty much everything else hold up; but the environment just struck me as something I'd find in a budget game.

I was espousing the merits of the bull rush (sprint, then press RMB or X) because it doesn't require any lead-up time to pull off, stuns enemies in a wide arc in front of you, doesn't "tire out" Titus and lets you continue any reloads.

You may have noticed that once you trigger a weapon reload, you can go into a sprint before the reload animations finishes and your weapon will still get a fresh clip.

If you're doing the executions but still dying a lot, it's probably a crowd control issue. Doing an execution while surrounded by a mob or in line of sight of the Gunner Boyz is usually a zero sum exercise as enemies batter you while the execution animations play out. You only get the health boost when the Ork dies, so it's entirely possible to die in the middle of executing someone.
