Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

Lots of love for Abnett but my only exposure to W40K lit is through Ben Counter. I really enjoyed the first Soul Drinkers novel. Wall-to-wall action and learned a lot about err, space marine culture.

Currently reading The Grey Knights Omnibus (again by Counter) and so far so good. If I still have some reading appetite for W40K after this monster I'll try out Eisenhorn (curious to see things from the Inquisition's perspective)

Of Counter, I've read Daemon World and Chapter War (the fourth Soul Drinkers novel). I don't think his prose style quite stands up to Abnett and Mitchell, but on the other hand it was enough fun that I've got the Soul Drinkers omnibus (first three novels) waiting on the shelf now. The only Horus Heresy I've read yet is Flight of the Eisenstein, which is good enough that I might have to pick up some of James Swallow's other books.

Meanwhile, back at the main topic: I'm remarkably impressed with the demo, as far as I've gotten in it. (Playing on normal difficulty, I keep getting pulped at the elevator fight by the Nobs, and haven't had the time this evening to keep at it.) The remarkable thing for me is how well it runs -- smooth as butter on a late-2010 iMac under Windows 7 (i7 quad-core @ 2.93GHz, Radeon HD5750 w/1MB, which is a mobile chipset) at 2560x1440. Dawn of War II bogs down a bit at that resolution, so I wasn't expecting Space Marine to be so much better. I was set on getting it for PS3, but may have to reconsider now. We'll see how the PS3 demo looks on Wednesday.

Wow. Wow. Wowiewow wow. Can't wait!

I think Mr Biscuit's reactions were similar to my own, man does that look like a lot of fun! Can't wait to get this!

FINE! TAKE MY MONEY!

Yeah, I wasn't sure about this one in such a crowded season but seeing that WTF video has given me the space marine equivalent of an erection.

"For the Emperor" = the new "For Boogle"?

How did I miss a discussion praising Abnett? The man is excellent. I first tried an early Counter book about space marines and all the stoicism bored me senseless. Then a friend said I should try Abnett. One Gaunt's Ghosts novel later I ran out to buy a stack of his books. He knows that the world of 40k needs to be fleshed out by the background politics, the agents of the inquistion, the average guardsman recruit, the fighter pilot, and the shopkeeper building tin models of the Warhound Titans to sell when they march into town. It's a real world instead of just a battlefield as he writes the Imperium and still his battle scenes are chaotic and brutal but with a level of detail that prevents confusion.

I wondered what would happen if that phrase was ever uttered in the bedroom. Then the warning glyph that read "divorce proceedings" began to flash an angry crimson.

I have to tell you, watching somebody fumble through the demo was a bit frustrating. This is despite the game looking really awesome.

I'm fairly certain he does that on purpose.

The PC demo is live on steam for the unwashed masses. I tried it on the 360, and loved the gameplay, but man the graphics look ruddy. Can't wait to see it on the PC.

I played the demo yesterday on the PC, and loved it.

Even with all my Female Doggoing and moaning about the multiplayer co-op earlier in this thread; this is the game I have been waiting for. Relic has perfectly captured the feel of the WH40K universe once again. I truly felt like a 1 metric ton Space Marine chewing through hordes of Ork. Everything felt "right" with the melee combat, ranged attacks, and using the jump pack.

Sept 6th cannot get here soon enough.

Quick tip: you can get the power axe in the demo. When you make it to the lift in the first demo mission, take a look on the side of it and you will see this tall, bluish structure with glass in the middle of it. Walk up to it and press E to exchange your sword for the axe. I discovered this by accident this morning as I was thrashing my way through the green tide.

I love it! I love Total Bisquit's WTF on Space Marine. There is so much glee I couldn't help but be amused.

I only wish that he took advantage of the zoom aiming in general and more importantly the slow motion aiming. This is done by zoom aiming while Fury mode is engaged. Slows everything down while boosting ranged damage slightly as well.

And yeah, he also missed the Power Axe where he was defending the lift alongside the Guardsmen.

I thought for a moment he might orgasm!!!

I felt the same way, but it could be because I have played the demo so many times...

His videos are fun to watch, and in this case, dangerous to the wallet.

The PC version looks far, far better than the 360 version. This one is going to be hard to resist getting on day one now. I'm hoping Amazon will do a $20 gift card, or at least a $10.

That's what I'm hoping for at the last minute -- there was a $7 credit (pah!) for pre-orders until the beginning of June(?), but they really need to do a proper 10/20 credit before release date.

So I preordered today. My only preorder bonus through Amazon was an in-game item. If Amazon decides to offer a $10 credit closer to release date, will that be applied to my account? Anyone have experience with this kind of thing?

In the SWTOR thread they posted a link to his smuggler preview. It was interesting enough but when it was done, youtube listed a torchlight 2 extended coop video. That was much more interesting...

It'll be applied to you account. A $20 credit was added to my Mario Galaxy 2 pre-order after I placed it, and I got the credit when it shipped.

Oh, I get it now.

Spoiler:

Those are not just squigs, but squigs with lit dynamite strapped to their backs.

Cunning.

Lovely, thanks.

Well that was a $50 demo. Why was it delayed for non-preorders again?

I don't think it's that much of a spoiler (although I was pleasantly surprised to see them). They, are, in fact,

Spoiler:

Bomb Squigs, traditionally used by Tankbustaz against armored vehicles. Also known as Squigs What Goes BOOM!, at least in my twisted imagination.

If not, just call them and they'll add it. Worst case, cancel the pre-order, and then re-order with the credit.

It wasn't delayed. It was right on time (scheduled for 8/23). It's just that the pre-order people got it early.

I think I will end up pre-ordering from Gamestop in order to get the Space Wolf skin for campaign.

My reasons should be obvious.
