Bastion Catch-all (now coming to iPad)

I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with the game due to bugs. I've run into five instances where events don't trigger and I'm forced to play up to thirty minutes of content (keep in mind I have a lot of idols enabled) over again. I want to finish this game and be done with it. The story is interesting, but the experience of playing is not that great due to many qualms I have with the combat and hit detection.

Really? I wonder if it's the idols being enabled as I didn't run into a single (noticeable) bug.

Beat the game on new game plus. Very rare for me to do that! A+++ would buy again.

A++ would play New Game++

I've been playing with all idols on and I've not had a problem. Can't say I've had any hit detection problems either.

That said mouse and keyboard controls are really, really appalling in comparison to the joypad controls.

The hit detection appears to be completely orthographic. If I'm flying in the air due to a launch pad, I will pick up black tonics and health potions even though I'm effectively high above them. Projectiles suffer a similar issue. They should make contact with the kid's chest since the shots are coming from about that height off the ground. However in cases where the projectile is coming from below me, I take damage the second it hits a pixel on my character's foot. This makes it difficult to time reflect shots and in general makes it harder for me to work out the timing. I've since gotten used to it, but I see not doing a more three-dimensional hit detection system as lazy engineering.

I think the mouse/keyboard controls are much better than using the controller since the patch fixed the diagonal stuff.

Yeah to fair degree but go and try the repeater or pistol proving grounds, they are really hard with mouse&keyboard and pretty straight forward with the joypad.

Welllllll, The pistol proving grounds was super easy for me. However, I did setup a macro to get the first prize. It's hard to tap the right mouse button extremely quickly, and I didn't have the pistols upgraded. I haven't done the repeater one yet. Holding shift to lock on seems to work very well. For non lock on stuff, the mouse is very accurate.

Controls have been adjusted, so that it's more leaning towards the isometric view you got. It is much better now.

The soundtrack has been stuck in my head all day. Loved the bastion podcast from two weeks ago as well. Nice to see everyone had a different take.

Ending:

Spoiler:

Story reminded me of The Nature of Blood by Caryl Phillips. Its a number of vignettes about how prejudices have shaped the lives of different individuals in different time periods.

For me, Bastion's ending didn't really matter if I choose one or the other. I saw the message as prejudices big and small are going to happen so long as we let it. Both endings are leaps of faith that their world will recognize that fact and hopefully put a stop to it.

Decrypted Deus Ex H+ this morning over breakfast. While doing that, I fired up the Bastion Demo. 20 minutes later, Deus Ex went onto the pile and a freshly bought copy of Bastion was downloading.

This also must be the first time in forever that I am not automatically looking for a Wiki on a new game.

How did you guys deal with "upgrade anxiety"? I just unlocked the Forge and I recently found the War Machete, which I like a lot. I was thinking of having a swift melee + swift ranged combination to be some kind of a Gunslinger, since I prefer nimble play-styles. So far I only have the Bolt Repeater as a fast ranged option. I just have no idea what other weapons become available and I don't wanna "waste" a couple hundred crystals on upgrading a weapon I will be ditching in a level or two.

Curse you, double post!

If you think it sounds fun, upgrade it. Later on you're much more limited by the upgrade items rather than crystals (especially if you do the who knows where horde levels and/or up the difficulty with idols).

Yeah, you really don't need to worry about it. Do what you think is best. If it isn't working, well, you'll die.

Plus, half the time you go into a level with a certain weapon and they give you a new one, making your upgrades moot (for a little while).

Since nothing past the first sentence made sense to me (I have no idea what you mean by idols, that may be me just having played 30 minutes though), I'll just upgrade my Machete and chop away.

Yes! Don't worry about it.

Simple answer: You need two things to upgrade: crystals and materials.

He's saying that a lack of crystals won't matter, and it won't, but the materials for upgrading an item are more rare.

Loved it. Definitely a contender for game of the year (in my humble opinion)

Aaaaaand done! I had taken a break after I was really close to the end because I didn't want it to end. Of course I'll be playing it again.

I will be stopping my first Bastion playthrough and starting again.

I now know what weapons I want and will be saving up my gems for War Machete and the Shotgun-musket thing.

That is an odd decision. Do you feel as if you chose poorly when it came to the upgrades?

This might be spoilery for those who haven't progressed this far.

Spoiler:

Here's the thing. I am now on the second stage of the first playthrough (The Kid) and I just unlocked more upgrades for all my weapons. Expensive upgrades. And I've already spent money on weapon upgrades I was just feeling out. And now I've got the buyer's remorse.

Money isn't an issue. Turn on some idols and you'll get tons more money. Or grind in the memory things or whatever they're called.

I wouldn't recommend starting over.

Edit: Plus they keep giving you MORE weapons.

Spoiler:

You could always spend some time in the dreams. Did you do any vigils, yet?

And what garion said. I think if you start over now, you might not have the will to do a new game+, which is something I'd highly suggest doing.

Your style of play perplexes me, but whatever works, man.

And it is beautiful, isn't it? It's been said many times before, but the soundtrack is so excellent.
