Recommend me a (non-gaming) podcast

/swoon

Thanks, OG_slinger!
I keep ARTC in my feeds specifically for the Pratchett and Lovecraft, but will be adding your suggestion to it.

I will check out the ARTC Lovecraft stuff this October, thanks!

Looks like they've only done two or three Lovecraft stories, is that right? Are there some other Cthulu mythos (or similar) episodes I should check out?

I think Shadow Over Innsmouth (5 or 6 part series) and Call of Cthulhu (3 or so parts) and maybe another one part story.

Skimming a bit, but does anyone have a recommendation for a good podcast about money and economics? The current situation in the US and Europe has peaked my interest on the topic, and I'd like to learn more.

Planet Money.

It's a bit further from macroeconomic theory, but Freakonomics Radio is a good one for behavioral economics. It can give you a good perception of why people do the things they do, which has a lot of bearing on some of the financial decisions being made today.

BBC's More Or Less is hosted by Tim Harford and although it's more about statistcs than economics, it's simply great. And check out Tim Harford's books while you're at it, he has some of the best economic writing out there.

Seconding planet money. A good mix of topical and background economics.

If you're in to Lovecraft, you might want to check out the Cthulhu podcast. 19 Nocturne Boulevard has also produced a bunch of Lovecraft stories. Also, Norm Sherman of the Drabblecast did an awesome version of Dagon.

Thirding it. They do a fantastic job explaining things and were about the only news organization that actually bothered to dissect the housing crisis and the following economic turmoil.

Thanks, Slinger! I will check out at least the Cthulu Podcast during Spooktoberfest 2011. I downloaded "The Thing On The Roof" since it's complete in 23ish minutes, and a Robert E Howard story.

I can definitely and wholeheartedly recommend Girl on Guy, a fairly new podcast hosted and produced by the sweet Aisha Tyler of recent Archer fame.

join me and my guests every week on the girl on guy podcast as we rant about stuff guys love: video games, action movies, comic books, home brewing, sex, small batch spirits, bar fights, and blowing sh*t up.

plus the weekly installment of self-inflicted wounds and the end of show apologia.

thanks for coming. i’m stoked you’re here.

She has a different guest every episode and even people I felt "meh" about initially proved to be really fun individuals. Oh, and it's on iTunes as well.

This. I've been listening to this show since it was first pimped on This American Life during the 2008 meltdown. They do an incredible job of taking complex economical concepts and issues and boiling them down into plain English. I really wish they would stop putting Jacob Goldstein on the show as his voice and speech style really grate on me but it's a minor complaint at worst.

It's Cthulu month at The Drabblecast. Norm kicked it off with The Haunter of the Dark and will have specially commissioned Lovecraftian tales for the rest of the month.

+1.

I just started listening and I was blown away by how good it is. Very worthwhile.

Two more recommendations:

Slate's Culture Gabfest should not be in my wheelhouse at all. It's very liberal artsy and filled with stuff that I'm guessing English majors talk about, but I really enjoy it. Mostly for the interaction among the hosts.

WTF is from Marc Maron. I'm just starting to listen to it. Every week he interviews some comedy figure. He's turned out some really good interview and it's become kind of an oral history of modern comedy.

Professor Blastoff is a fun show. I think I'm going to stick with it.

Clark Howard talks about the larger picture of national economics every once in awhile, and does a great job of breaking it down into easy-to-digest terms. Most of the time, though, he focuses on money from an individual consumer's perspective.

Back to work with Merlin Mann and Dan Benjamin is great.

I just want to put a plug in for a podcast that we are supporting. Space Boffins is a neat little production by a husband & wife pair of BBC journos with an interest in space. Focus is on space in the UK, but there's definitely some space topics of general interest there as well.

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet or not, but I've recently started listening to Freakonomics Radio. It reminds me a bit of Planet Money crossed with This American Life.

I found the recent episode The Church of “Scionology” very interesting.

Point of Inquiry from the Center for Inquiry is a really good skeptical/atheist interview show. It's really grown on me over the last few months.

Have I posted Cort and Fatboy before? If not, I have failed you all.

Also, beware Thursdays, those are not for beginners nor the faint of heart. Warning part deux, very NSFW language in many shows.

They're part of the Cascadia.fm network, most of the affiliated shows are pretty good, though they cancelled one of my favorite podcasts last spring. The bastards.

So awesome. Archer's diarrhea story is nearly killing me.

I'd second or whatever Freakonomics and the History of Rome. I listened to a couple WTF episodes this week based on the recommendation here, and it's a good one too. You just need to skip the first 5-15 minutes while he does his monologue.

She's fantastic. I think I'm in love.

/sigh

I just wish Planet Money happened more often. Or that the feed archive was deeper.

I would definitely have to second Planet Money, very informative about the U.S. financial system, usually short, and very humorous. I find it to be some of the best fare NPR has to offer.

In a similar vein I would also recommend the APM Marketplace Podcasts, including the main show, the Tech Report, the weekend Money addition, and an offbeat podcast called The Dinner Party Download that offers history lessons for the current week, cocktails to accompany the theme of the history lesson, and an interview with a celebrity.

I listen to all these religiously, in addition to all my regular gaming podcasts

Some of the crossover episodes between Planet Money and This American Life are available at the This American Life radio archives. Free to play, $0.99 to download from iTunes. Luckily I saved some of these earlier episodes, specifically "The Giant Pool Of Money" as well as the follow up episode that was released about a year later.

I also believe the Planet Money blog also has all their episodes archived, free to play but not always available for download.
