NCAA Football 2011 Season Catch-All

Yup.

Auburn, Ohio St. and Oregon are all doing the happy dance because everyone just forgot them.

Paying for stripper/prostitutes and then paying for the follow up abortion!

That's the thing. You could all day about whose violations were more flagrant or whatever but that's the word that jumps out at you. There isn't enough damage control in the world...

Given Miami's history, it would be really nice if the NCAA had the balls to really make an example of them but it'll never happen.

Reading about this, I kept flashing back to all the hell I got from Miami fans around the Free Shoes University Scandal.

This just feels an awful lot like Karma. I mean a yacht, hookers, an abortion? Really? All from a guy who is part owner in an Agency that represented some of these guys as pros?

Oh, and the fact that Paul Dee, the guy who raked USC over the coals for looking ther other way during Agent misconduct, was the AD at the time. Yeah, that's just classic.

Seems fitting that the NCAA would do this to Miami as well, given the details that are coming to light.

I have heard pretty much all of the sports talking heads say that the Death Penalty is off the table as it ends up costing all of the other schools in the target school's league lots of money.

With the amount of realignment going on, that may not be as much of an issue going forward. Miami can go from a target of the SEC to becoming an independent. The ACC wasn't going to benefit from Miami much anymore anyway.

Supposedly, the SEC presidents voted today to disallow new schools from existing markets. That would shut out Miami and Florida State, while conveniently leaving the door open to Texas A&M.

That would also eliminate Clemson. The only candidate left that would make sense is Va. Tech.

There was a rumor today that the SEC was going to add A&M, OU, VA Tech, and Mizzou; Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com says he has confirmed that rumor was "totally false". All those teams have been rumored at various points, though. I wonder if the rumor was 1/4 wrong, 3/4 wrong, wrong only in that it's not a done deal yet...

Today the Longhorn Network announced that they would indeed air a second game this season, this one a conference game, and said they'd air highschool highlights (which pretty much flaunts a recent NCAA ruling).

The Aggies definitely want to play in the SEC in 2012. When does that mean they have to join by? The target keeps moving. It was originally reported as August 22 of this year. Then September 1. Now I've heard one rumor that it just needs to be this calendar year. I'm really hoping it happens before this season starts, because I'm having a hard time following pre-season practice reporting. I don't want to be this distracted when the games start.

I remember a lot of talk (started by the Cam Newton allegations) in last year's thread about players not being fairly compensated. Slightly interesting article on the subject over at Forbes about the value of a Football Scholarship.

This has a bit of humor.

This is a bit old, but worth the link. I'm glad someone linked it to me. I never really thought about the spectacle that surrounds the game. After watching it I kind of realized I took for granted the Saturdays I was able to spend in the stadium.

We out, PEACE!

As long as you end up in the SEC I'll be happy.

Arkansas can use the win each year ;)

Figures that a pig-caller doesn't realize we play every year already!

Also, prepare for a beating this year.

Maybe the SWC should just come back together now that SMU is playing football again.

I think SMU would be more fun to have in the Big 12 than A&M.

Care to elaborate?

Sure. SMU has a fun head coach, wealthy alumni that is spending ton of cash on the program, and they don't whine about everybody liking Texas more. If they came to the Big 12, I bet they would bring better TV ratings, too. And there have been rumors that Houston would come.

It would be big drop-off in basketball, though. But we would face another KU alum as sorts, since Daugherty coached under Roy Williams as KU. As a bonus, Daugherty and his wife were in the same Lamaze with my wife and me while were still in Lawrence.

SMU seems much more willing to go toe-to-toe with Texas than run and hide.

You think SMU would bring better TV ratings than Texas A&M? Are you crazy?

When A&M beats Texas in College Station for the 2nd year in a row (and 4 of the last 6) in football, sends its baseball team to the CWS, and makes the NCAA tourney in basketball the last 7 years in a row, I don't think we're running and hiding from anyone, in any sport. Especially in football... the SEC is a significant upgrade over the Big XII in basically every way imaginable.

If you guys are smart, you'll leave the remains of this conference behind and go to the Big East. (I've heard your admin is exploring that option among other things.) Otherwise, enjoy Deloss Dodds as the conference commissioner, because that's exactly who runs the show.

Edit to add: we have publically offered to continue to play Texas in everything. THEY are the ones who are going to sever over 100 years of history between the two schools.

MBH pretty much said it all. We've won 3 out of the last 5 in football against Texas, and have offered to keep the series, on Thanksgiving, even with our killer SEC schedule. It is impossible to call that running. The Longhorns, on the other hand, are threatening to stop playing us. That's running. That's being afraid to settle it on the field.

FWIW, if they do refuse to play us, it wouldn't be the first time. They refused to play us from (ancient history here, but interesting) 1912-1914. So it's not like the series has never been broken, and it was them chickening out then, too.

Almost all the Aggies I know respect KU and I know a lot of them want to go see the game at the Phog this year, since it may be their last chance. There's no reason for any animosity.

What's the incentive for Virginia Tech to leave the ACC for the SEC? Higher conference profile? TV money? It seems like a sweet gig to beat up the ACC and have a near-guaranteed BCS berth each season.

Don't get me wrong, as a Virginia grad I'd love nothing more than to see Tech football get dominated each year in the SEC. Tech tends to lose a game or two each season due to sloppy play. They just never lose to us, the big tease.

I hope VT gets added to the SEC as a cross-division annual football matchup for A&M. Both schools have similar military cultures. We last played a non-conference series with them a few years ago that was a lot of fun (despite the fact that Franchione *spit* was coaching us then).

I haven't heard Virginia Tech mentioned as a candidate *lately*....but we are about to have an open spot for a Tech on our schedule.

It's all good. I was rooting for A&M basketball until Turgeon bolted. But the way A&M is trying to get out is kind of lame. And I definitely would be excited to have SMU replace them. I think SMU's ratings would increase substantially if they were in an AQ conference.

And yeah, if the Big 12 finally tanks, I hope Kansas makes their way to the Big East. I think it would be a better football conference for KU, and it would be the mother of all basketball conferences.

So who will A&M play during rivalry week if Texas backs out?

i38warhawk wrote:

I imagine LSU would be pretty high on the list. We have a pretty long history with them from back in the SWC days. Beyond that I'm not sure.

LSU is the name I've heard as well. Longtime rival, they actually dropped our series in the mid-90s after we beat them 5 or 6 years in a row. SEC teams don't want to open their season with a non-conference loss.

They got some payback earlier this year, though. I can still feel the sting, if I concentrate.

Regarding A&M switching conferences - I am genuinely curious what opinions are out there. Houston sports talk has mainly blamed the Longhorns for always trying to get one over on their conference partners, and the Big 12 commish for being their lapdog.

Hate to break it to you guys, but Arkansas already plays LSU that week (usually the day after Thanksgiving). We fight over a golden boot, get drunk on a golf course (only at the Little Rock games), and make fun of Les Miles.

Here's a picture.

That's cool, because ultimately there are going to be so many people wanting us to keep playing the Longhorns then that their threats will end up empty. There are already rumors that the 'horn sympathists in the legislature will "force" the game to be played, giving them a convenient way to back down without losing face.
