Bastion Catch-all (now coming to iPad)

I bought the soundtrack edition for 20. I can't wait to play it tonight.

Does the full version let you play with the camera zoom level? The art work is nice enough that I'd like to be able to zoom in at some set pieces, but I couldn't find an option in the demo.
For those who completed it, how long did it take you to get through it?

No zoom, at least not in the 360 version. 5 hours sounds about right, but I'd really recommend doing a New Game+ playthrough afterward. The game feels quite a bit different with all the weapon upgrades and a bunch of idols active.

Yeah, between the Proving Grounds and Who Knows Wheres, I think I really stretched out my time with the game. New Game+ was another 2-3 hours, which I did in one sitting, like watching a great movie. I don't consider any of that "stretching out" to have been padding either, I enjoyed every moment of it, whether it was story, trying new combinations, or challenging myself with different weapons.

You guys beat the game in 5 hours? O.o

I'm pretty sure it took me about 15 hours, including retries and optional content.

I downloaded the Steam demo in an act of restraint.

I played for a minute, fell off a cliff and died. All of my actions were narrated and it was funny.

I bought the game.

So, I'm in love. This game has lived up to everything I had hoped for. I played 2+ hours of it and the only real complaint I have is that I don't know the end.

Okay, and the narrator perhaps talks too often. I'm not quite annoyed by it, but it's pretty close.

Can't wait to get back to this tomorrow.

Just played about half an hour of it tonight on Steam. Eeeeeee I'm excited.

Installing (just got back from work)

Played it for a bit and it's quite something different. The narrating part is quite alright.
Falling through openings, I guess...but I'd like to see that you cannot fall through parts
that are hidden. Only encountered that once so far though.
All in all an excellent game experience so far.

Soundtrack for sale on Steam for $5 instead of $10.

Played 1.5 hours or so. It's great fun. Can't wait to play more, but sleep calls. I'm glad I bought the soundtrack edition as it saved me five bucks (If you didn't buy the soundtrack edition, it looks like you can still buy just the soundtrack for half off on Steam).

Having tried some with mouse/keyboard and some with a 360 controller, I like a little bit of both. It can be hard to shoot arrows with the 360 controller because the right thumbstick is the one that aims without moving yet you are firing with X (or B or whatever). The mouse lets you aim really nicely. However, it's a bit of a bummer to use the WASD keys due to how the levels are laid out and it's a bit difficult to go diagonal. It would be nice if you could map the diagonals to the keyboard, but I doubt you can do that.

The developer says the controls are fully remappable even for gamepad in the PC version. I haven't tried it yet, but moving the right thumbstick functionality to D-pad might solve the issue.

You can also use the right and left bumpers to switch targets.

With some weapons, you need to aim independent of targeting.

OMG I love this game. Its been a while since a game made me play past midnight on a workweek. I love the controls, its so satisfying to hit stuff in this game (listen up deathspank).

But more importantly, the storyteller! Oh I love the storyteller, I want him in all my games from now on. Having the storyteller in Diablo 3 would be absolutely awesome!

About 2+ hours in and I love the War Machete & Fang Repeater.

In fact, upgraded, the Fang Repeater with is just plain cheating

I fired this up last night on PC. I played through the first couple of missions, and played through the challenges for the bow and the machete. The game lacks the necessary precision to make the challenges not feel like a game of chance. It's just not grabbing me yet, and that's a little disappointing.

As the people who first played on Xbox have mentioned through the pages, the game has a slow, steady start, and even progression. If you don't like the idea of sticking with it for hours, to get to the great stuff, then shelve it.

Challenges are easier once you've upgraded your weapons a bit (and you can choose the proper perk loadout). But I totally agree about the precision aspect.

Is there a targeting system on PC, aside from the mouse?

(For the bow) On the 360 you'd target the last balloon in the line you're aiming for, to ensure it doesn't stray from its path.

If you're having trouble with a challenge, it's usually a sign that you should leave it and come back when you have a few more upgrades for that weapon. The bow challenge is pretty easy once you have at least one of the +penetration upgrades. You probably don't need many upgrades for the machete challenge, that one is more about prioritizing targets.
Also, don't feel like you have to finish the challenges. There are a lot of good secret techniques to be had elsewhere.

That's the thing, if you're going for the precision shot your window to achieve that is so short that you can't target the last balloon in time.

Also, it seems weird to me that the challenges, I repeat, challenges use the weapon that you've upgraded with no indication that's the case.

Went out and bought a wired 360 controller to play this (and other games). Loving it. Need to play again. Stupid work.

You can aim while holding the block button. Block, line up your shot, then fire the bow.

Actually... I think you're talking about the Bow challenge. To get it in 5 shots, you do need the upgraded damage bonus, then when aligning your shot, Make sure you target the last ballon of 3 in a row, basically a straight line, charge up and let fly. That's the "trick" you can pick which ballon you are targetting using LMB/RMB.

So essentially, you need to down 3 ballons in a row (only possible with the upgraded dmg) 4 times and then that middle ballon.

PS. I'm playing with an xbox controller on the PC. Best purchase I've made this year

That bow challenge was really easy with the mouse because you can aim. I don't even think I had any upgrades... just used the power shot. I imagine it would be harder with the 360 controller aiming wise.

I suspect that I will switch to the mouse once in awhile for the challenges.

That's what I plan on doing. Having the option to switch controls is nice.

The challenge confunding me is the damn Machette challenge. There's no way to kill everything in 90 secs!!! They can fly off the damn map and throwing the machette misses moving targets 1/2 the time.

Anyone have any advise?

The biggest tip for that challenge is (if you're fast, this will win it for you, so I spoilered it):

Spoiler:

Dodge your way quick as a bunny to the center where the black (green?) squirts spawn. MASH YO' ATTACKS. Kill them before they manage to spread out too much. As they stop spawning, immediately target the blue squirt spawning machines, then the turrets, and finally the squirts that managed to wrest themselves away from your initial onslaught.

Kill the guys coming up out of the ground, first. That'll get you most of them dead. Then kill the machines, and kill the turrets last. Then mop up any remaining guys. The turrets will kill some guys for you, and the key is getting the ones that run away (the ones that sprout from the ground in the center of the map) before they get that chance.

Youtube. If I couldn't get first place in a challenge after a few tries, youtube always had the answer.
Weirdly enough I think the first few challenges are among the hardest - the hammer, the machete, and the shield.

Spoiler:

The machete is not very intuitive - you need to stand where the squirts come pouring out of the ground and kill them as they appear. After you've killed a ton of the squirts at the spawn location, the spawn rate slows down (after ~15 seconds IIRC). Then take out the carts and turrets. There will be a few squirts left at that point here and there but you should be able to chase them down. Try to chase them down and melee them if possible. The thrown machete will often miss the fast-moving squirts and it takes a fair amount of time to get off a throw.

Skip it. I figured the reward can't be worth the frustration, and you only need to complete seven Proving Grounds for the Vigil, which actually counts towards the completion achievement.

Hammer, machete, shield, and pike I couldn't do at all. Some of the ranged ones were dead simple, especially with an upgrade or three, and then I just needed a hint from the Interwebz to complete the dueling pistols. Done, and to hell with the machete challenge (even though they're my favourite melee weapon) (and in the game).

I skipped the hammer, pike, and pistol challenges. Hammer and pistols were just too twitchy for me, and the pike challenge was just really annoying.
