GWJ Online Boardgame Group

Just found out about this thread after hearing about it on the podcast. Can't believe I haven't seen this before now... this is what I get for not being very active on the forums anymore.

Sign me up for any and all spots that are free! I would love to learn how to play tons of board games, and of the ones I already know I would like to flex my skills. I have Steam, I have e-mail, and I have a web browser.

Please invite me to the Steam group. I'm vrikkgwj on there.

It's an informal system. Show up in vent we'd night, and see who is up for what.

I'd also be down for power grid. Anyone have a learning resource? How to Play hasn't covered it.

Add me to the group as well (link to my Steam profile is in sig).

I'm interested in playing Power Grid, and although I am by no means claiming to be an expert I have played the game a dozen or so times. Here's a link to the Board Games with Scott video he did on Power Grid (he's got the designer in the video as well). That plus the official rules from the Rio Grande website should be enough to get folks started. I'd be glad to answer any rules questions folks have.

Again, I HIGHLY encourage people to get in and load the games you think we might play in BSW ahead of time, as it can be a boring 3 minute wait for a new game's assets to show up.

I'm shamed that I'm this late to the party. My supplication for an invite:

With this being back to school week, I can't guaranteed my presence on Wednesday, only my desire. I don't know Power Grid yet, but I'm good on 7 Wonders, Stone Age, RftG, Dominion, etc.

I'd love to join, please, Steam profile is in my sig.

Probably won't be able to join in on any US time based fun but would love to join in on the Euro based offspring. Would be up for any PBEM games as well, currently totally loving Thunderstone on Yucata.

I'm happy to play games with the group, but if anyone is interested in learning PowerGrid on BSW or Though the Ages on www.boardgaming-online.com/ I would be happy to play or teach.

Is that link right? It wasn't working for me. I've played Through the Ages (the actual offline board game) three times now and have yet to finish a full game. I wonder if online will take out a lot of the fiddly upkeep and speed things up.

UPDATE: Link works for me now.

The online interface for TTA seems less than conducive to learning the game.

The website does go up and down more often than you'd like. (I'm guessing it's some sort of hosting issue that the site owner can't afford to fix).

Rabbit - I think it's as good as many BSW games. At least you don't have to wade through all of the German / BSW meta game crap. The nice thing about it is that when you are taking your turn all of a player's options are listed in a drop down action menu. As you progress though your turn, it continues to update the list based on your available actions, resources, research, etc. Also, at any point during your normal action phase, you can choose to reset your turn and start over.

The server is really setup for asynchronous play, as the server will email you when it's your turn, but it also works fine in real time with some refreshing required. You can monitor other people's turns by viewing their player board or looking at the journal.

The fiddlyness of the boardgame is the only thing that keeps it from getting more regular play from me. In the time it takes to play TtA, I could have played a (short) 18xx instead.

Maybe I need to get in a game to see what you mean. Trying to see a board view was really muddled to me.

Good overview for Stone Age:

And the official game rules:

See you all tonight.

To those that just finished the Tikal game at Spiel by Web, thanks!! Was awesome.

Anyone up for another game?

Good game, it was fun.

Also I'm finally back from vacation and looking forward to joining in on the festivities tonight. I could also use an invite to the Steam group. http://steamcommunity.com/id/liquidl...

Let's try again next week for a Eurozone GWJ Board Game night. I have an early, and long, day tomorrow, so I can't hang out much longer. Hit me up for a game if you see me idling on steam.

I told my wife that no one showed, and received the nicest pat on the head and sympathy sigh I've ever received from her. There's a lot of sarcasm and little jabs in our interactions.

Don't mind me, just subscribing.

Argh, my fault!

When you said 8pm, I obviously assumed 8pm my time, forgetting you are an hour ahead. Reading posts for actual content does not seem to be my forte.
I'm available most of the rest of this evening, just need to comfort the wife after her long day and then I can play.

Druidpeak, I'll make sure you're an admin in the steam group so you can post events. I'll also update the OP with info for the weekly Euro game nights - can you repost the day/time (and time zone) that you're doing it?

Sorry that no one showed - keep trying! New players are coming in all the time!

I'm going on Vacation at the end of the week so I'll pass on this one, though I'm definitely up for more PBEM. I highly recommend people give it a shot - spielbyweb is quite nice and the rules are there on the site.

When I come back, I think I'd like to start a game of Wallenstein - haven't played it, but the rules look identical to Shogun, so it should be great.

So are we on for Stone Age (at least) tonight? I've freed up my calendar for you people!

We are ON. 8PM is official start time, though if you're there earlier I might be!

Yeah, Shogun was a remake of Wallentstein. Shogun made a couple of changes that I much prefer over Wallenstein - and I think the map is more interesting - but I'd be up for a game of Wally, too.

Actually, everything on SpielByWeb is great except for Bus. Screw that game. Hoity Toity is also just a bit too much on the light side. Santiago and Hacienda are both lots of fun. Reef Encounter melts my brain a little bit.

Looks like I'm not going to be able to make it tonight - have fun all, hopefully see you next week.

Im in for sure. I might or might not be on vent, depends if I'm multitasking on the couch. I'm down for anything, although im a bit burned out on Seven Wonders. My kids are a little too into it right now!

I think I have only just figured out how worker movement actually works in this game now!
I blocked myself off once or twice thinking that the edges with no stones would provide the cheapest movement, only to find all my moves really expensive.

Hopefully I can do better in this game!

I really wanted to play tonight, but I just had an impromptu vacation thrown at me for this weekend, starting tomorrow. HF guys, hope to see you next week!

Ok, i have missed the first two weeks, but I don't see anything stopping me tonight, pending my wife coming up with something. I'm cooking dinner for her, then I'm heading to the nerd cave to board game it up.

One invite for me, please! Thanks in advance!

My gf would like an invite as well, please. Her username on Steam is KTHD.

Thanks!
