GWJ OOTP League Thread

Pages

If it's not obvious, this is the official thread for the GWJ Out of the Park Baseball League. This thread is for commiserations, complains, notes, trade proposals, trash-talking (keep it light please) and other various crap. However, this thread is for posts regarding the GWJ league only. If you have a general OOTP comment, there's a thread for that.

The GWJ Baseball League features 16 teams in total, with 8 teams in two leagues. There are no Wild Cards in the GWJBL, but just a straight pennant chase followed by the Championship Series.

The GWJBL is also historical simulation of baseball, with league settings currently set to produce results similar to the 1988 MLB season. The league has had its history simulated since 1900, so yeah, there's a bunch of history there.

IF YOU WISH TO JOIN THE LEAGUE: You wanna sign up for the GWJBL? Fantastic! Two things though.

1.) New owners can join at any time, just drop me a line!

2.) New owners need to be of at least "Intern" status or have another member of the league vouch for them. This isn't a hard-and-fast rule, and if your application to take on a team is totally awesome, you'll be let in. However, if you're new to GWJ, hang out a bit, post a few times, let us all get to know you, then apply. Ideally. Again, this rule is not set in stone.

If you still want in, and neither of these things are an issue, drop the commish a line a Prederick at gmail dot com.

And off we go...good luck everyone and have fun!! I'll try not to pester ya all too much *chuckle*

Oh thank god. I know I have a hard time following web-ternet directions sometimes, so I tried to make them as clear and concise as possible. Again, if anyone has an issue, for god's sake let me know.

No go forth, view your rosters, and scream for joy/rage against fate.

I haven't gotten an email. sabresfan1983 at gmail dot com.

Problem (why me:). I uncompressed the tar.gz and got the GWJLeague.tar(with Winzip). Then uncompressed the tar file with Winzip, then with 7zip. Both got the same result: No folder name of GWJLeagueault was created, but 3 folders ( messages, news and replays) and 13 data files, were unzipped in a folder I made. Well I gather these all up in a folder I created as you suggested, 'GWJLeague.lg'. Now I was going to grab your attached file and put it in a /settings folder. But as mentioned above, only the 3 above mentioned folders were unzipped originally.

So what to do. Make a 'settings' folder and put accountsdata...into it? Or?

Sent. I think I accidentally quoted myself, so keep an eye out for that.

Yes, if you don't have a settings folder, definitely create a folder named "settings".

The "GWJLeagueault" folder name I should've amended, as, after a gave it a little working over, didn't pop up. The current file should just give you a GWJLeague folder whose interior looks like this. Should. Create a folder named "settings", move the GM Accounts .dat file there, and you should be ready to rock.

You did quote yourself, which seemed to have removed the attachment. Could you send it to me again?

Thanks!

The only thing I'm going to rage against is that I happened to view my roster before you had to redo the draft. I really liked the pitching staff on that team and I really don't care for the starting staff I have now.

Otherwise, it's just good to start moving forward.

Edit: Okay, I find the naming of my third baseman to be funny.

Thanks for the information. I dragged the 'accountsdata_gms.dat' file over to my 'settings' folder I created in GWJLeague.lg folder. What I got was, 'accountsdata_gms (1).dat' . So do I just get rid of the '1' and all is o.k. Or did my drag and drop not do the trick (I couldn't see how to actually download the file. It is 2 KB)?

One quick note for those of you running Win7- you'll find the saved_games folder under Documents/Out of the Park Developments/OOTP Baseball 12. Dump the .lg file there. I also had to manually create a settings folder inside the GWJLeague.lg file to have a spot to put the .dat file.

One issue I'm having- when I load up the league it lets me load, select my GM and enter my password and then gives me an error saying it couldn't load the GM data, and that I might need to delete my GM settings file in my data folder. Doing so clears the error but just leaves a db.cfg file in there. Anyone else having this issue or a possible solution? It doesn't keep me from managing my team, but I wonder if it's having an impact elsewhere that I'm not seeing.

I just went back in to try my password out to see if I got same error you mentioned. But no, all went smoothly. I clicked around. Went to Spring training etc. and everything ran fine. I'm using Win 7 Home Premium.

Prederick: Btw, if I get that gamesdata confirmation that it's fine, I can go ahead and use FTP without worrying about global settings etc.?

Hi
haven't received e-mail. Maybe never sent e-mail to you. mitchson at net-venture.com.
Thanks

Just to verify, because there's no 'commish' aspect for GM's, there is no way to edit names, correct?

Yes. Any editing you'd like done to your manager personally I have to handle.

Weird, you shouldn't be dealing with that at the moment. Even after deleting and replacing the .dat file that happens? Well, if it happens again, I may consider personally setting passwords for everyone on my end and sending the .dat file out, but I hope it won't come to that. Ostensibly, if you get that message, just delete any accountsdata .dat files. the db.cfg file leave alone.

mitchson, Counselor, the e-mail's been sent.

I'm going to put opening day on indefinite hold until everyone's gotten to look at their teams and set their passwords without any issue.

Yes, the file attachment is just 2KB. All you should need to do to download it is select the attachment in the e-mail I sent everyone, which, with most e-mail clients, should only require clicking on it. And all the FTP work is taken care of in the league files itself, so all you should need to do is choose to Export to FTP and it'll do it automatically.

I got the email, but I don't see myself or my team on the list of managers.

Nice work, Pred. I think I got it all figured out and set up. Here are some questions and observations:

As a test, I accidentally exported my team file via FTP before making any changes. It went smoothly but maybe Pred, you can verify that it went through. I would like to modify my rosters somewhat prior to Opening Day, do I just export it again?

So if I understand correctly, the next event in game will be Opening Day, which will involves us trimming down our current 40-man ST roster down to 25 right? What happens exactly if we forgot to make the appropriate changes/upload our team file on each sim day?

Still a little bit confused about free agent signing, but it sounds like exactly what you'd do in a single-player game but the outcome of the offer (acceptance, rejection, competing offers, etc.) is determined by AI at commissioner's next sim. Correct?

When I went to set my GM password under 'Manager Options,' I noticed under 'Team Control Settings' the only items that required my input was 'Initiate and React to Trades.' I made some adjustment to that, YMMV.

Can I be fired as the GM by my team owner? I think that'll be pretty funny. If I suck at the game, I'd be kicked out of the league by the game itself.

Finally, not sure if anyone else is playing on a mac (macbook pro for me.) I'd be happy to entertain any mac-specific questions (eg. location of files, directories, etc.) and try my best to help.

Introducing Pittsburgh Fighting Pierogies starting RF Craig Peterson, from San Jacinto CA.

Looks like I'm up and running. Thanks, Pred.

My mistake, I sent you an updated file, so you should be in there and ready to rock.

Pretty much. You can export as many times as you want, prior to me simming the in-game time. What's wonderful is that there is a in-game FTP tracker, so when I go to download new files, I can see what the local time was when the file was uploaded, and what date in-game that upload represents. Baltimore, Pittsburgh, your uploads are fine.

So if I understand correctly, the next event in game will be Opening Day, which will involves us trimming down our current 40-man ST roster down to 25 right? What happens exactly if we forgot to make the appropriate changes/upload our team file on each sim day?

Regarding going from the 40-man to the 25-man roster, if you don't do it, the AI should handle it for you. At worst, it means I, the commissioner will force the AI to do it for you. Those of you who have spent some time playing the game should know that while the AI is nice, it does have the occasional tendency to drop the 3B you just signed to a 4-year $35M contract to the bench.

RE: Free Agency, yes, exactly. You can either make the offer yourself, or tell me the offer you'd like to make and it'll get done. As far as the Off-Season free agency period goes, we may try something different for the time frame of when players file and the end of winter meetings to allow for the proper frenzy.

As for the Manager Options, I had to sim from the inaugural draft to the current date (April 1st), and most teams wouldn't have made any moves, leaving the AI-controlled teams to sign whatever remaining talent there was. So I set every user-controlled team to AI roster control in everything except for trades so lineups and pitching staffs would be set, and signings (if any) would be made.

And in an online league, GMs can't be fired by the AI, so even if you finish 1-161, that just means you've got the #1 pick on lock.

Alright, i'm going to set our first sim date, tenuously, to Thursday night at midnight. That first sim will take us up to opening day and 25-man rosters, et al. I'm then going to do another one Friday at midnight, and that'll be our first week of in-game play. That said, i'm only going to do this once everyone's got the league installed, a password set, and is ready to rock without any issues.

I hope everyone gets a really good look at their roster, all of it, from Rookie League through the Majors. Without any stats to speak of, it's not the easiest to get a total idea of the players you want around, I know, looking at my roster, there are already a few dudes who may end up trade bait by July. Moreover, I've got a 16-year old whose intelligence I hope wins out over his laziness career-wise.

I tried the new file, and I still can't see myself.

Couple things: 1) So it's o.k. to test ftp, as long as I do the one I really want before Thursday?; 2) In, 'Manager Options', I set most of the top control options to myself out of habit. Should I have left them to AI? 3) Midnight ET?;4) Does that game alert you, or you will alert us when it's time to download a simmed period for us so we know to deal with it? And when this happens, we will inport said simmed file and the game will know where to look for the file? Or we need to look for GWJBL.leg (or whatever it's named, don't quite remember it now)?

Thanks

While I can't speak specifically to OOTP (as this is my first mp game), but the standard way that file uploads work with text sims is that whatever your latest upload is wipes out the previous one. So, if you do a test upload today just to make sure it works, but then make a bunch of roster and lineup changes for tomorrow night's sim, then the newer upload replaces the previous upload.

If you're use to being in control, then turn off the AI. If you find yourself overwhelmed, turn it back on.

I sent most of this in an email to Prederick, but I'll post some of it here in case anyone else is running into problems. When I load the league, log in, enter my password, I get an error regarding the accountsdata_gms file that was sent in the initial email being incorrect, and that I may need to delete it. I also get an error when trying to upload my team via FTP. I know the two are connected- in OOTP's online league FTP options dialog box you can import an account data file, check that file, but there is also a spot to enter a general manager's key. My key right now is asf7akseg789q34tkHGZ. Does this match what others have for their key? I think that may be the only problem that is keeping me from uploading via FTP. I'd really like to get that working so I don't have to manually email my team and import the league every week.

Weird, I may have to upload a new league file for you then.

1.) You can upload changes to your roster as many times as you like before the sim date. The final, most recent one is the one the game will use.

2.) Up to you. Do you want to handle promotions/demotions throughout your organization? Or do you want the AI to do it?

3.) Yes

4.) I will alert everyone when a new league file has been uploaded. Now that you've got the league installed, you don't have to look for the file and manually unpack it anymore. In the OOTP dropdown menu there's a option labled "Load Online league File" which will do everything for you.

Landshrk, i'm going to upload another league file tonight, I advise you to delete everything in the GWJ League folder, create a new one, and start over, and see if that fixes it.

EDIT: Alright, I had a few minutes before work, so I uploaded a new file. Counselor, Landshrk, i've sent you both new .dat files, and I both of you need to grab the new league file, try installing again, and let me know if anything goes wrong.

Also, Baltimore and Pittsburgh, if you could grab the new file as well (for you it should just be a matter of hitting "Load Online League File" in the OOTP dropdown menu, as mentioned above) and check to see if the moves you made (if any) stuck.

I didn't make any moves, I just hit the button to make sure everything was working.

Not sure why, but completely uninstalling and reinstalling OOTP12 and then redoing the league setup seems to have worked. Sorry for the trouble I caused.

I finally got into the game.

Hey Pred set-up went ok. Sent you FTP, could you let me know if went through ok.
Thanks

I uploaded a file as well. I'd like confirmation that I didn't screw it up.
