This is why I have yet to reach level 2 after four characters.

I have a thing for those poison traps. I'll keep clicking it to disarm it, dammit, but all I do it keep getting hit. It says 45%, but I'm pretty sure it means 5%. ;)

This is more accurately why I have yet to reach level 2 after four characters. Trying to disarm a poison arrow trap has accounted for all of my deaths except for the first on when I was somehow immediately killed by a diggle.

You managed to break me with this long post ;). I just bought it . I didn't save 0.5$ but I found a 2 NIS coin (0.57$ value) on the floor at the post office which should cover it.

So far I'm playing warior smith build and getting my inventory cluttered and getting killed on the 2nd level.

How on earth am I supposed to survive as a pure rogue? I tried making one after a couple sword and board warriors and a monk psion. The difference is shocking.

I like burglary a lot, which helps for the rogueyness, but yeah it is a little harder than a full defense person.

I can see it becoming more powerful when ranged weapons and tinkering become available. But in the beginning I suffer greatly from a couple problems.

1. I can't attack worth a damn, 1 point of damage, maybe, hitting half the time.
2. I have no survival skills and weak stats.
3. I don't start with any throwing weapons or a crossbow.
4. No matter what I do, I can't avoid having to open doors by standing beside them.

Any ideas? A hybrid would work better of course, but I do really want to try a pure build.

If you can get level two of mycology, which is a rogue skill I think, that should really help through the first couple levels.

I think my failures in the game are generally related to overconfidence . I made a dual wielding swordsman assassin with maxed crossbow skill, got tons of bolts and when I was confronted with a swarm of monsters while being in a closed room . I didn't use the teleporter to escape ... big mistake. I had Iron armor, an upgraded iron helmet and copper boots along with 2 enchanted sword, an 3 damage crossbow I put on an anvil, and a ton of bolts. I had good stuff but I failed in the tactical aspect.

I finally made it to level 2 and the third room was a monster zoo. I made a mistake while trying to run away and ended up trapped in a dead end. Turns out standing at the end of a hallway actually isn't that bad of a strategy especially if you have the level 1 promethean magic spell. Unfortunately, I died after a half and hour with four monsters left.

Do your crafting skills get any better if you haven't picked one of the crafting abilities? Most of the recipes I have tried result in the "you aren't crafty enough" message.

Unfortunately no. It would be nice if there was like a 5% chance of leveling up every time you craft something, but as it is you have to devote a skill point to it.

On the plus side, smithing is really powerful for the early game and I try to spend points in it as soon as I have good materials. The gear you craft helps with survivability a lot. Both of my characters that have gotten below dungeon level 5 were smiths.

Ah yes, the perpetual issue in roguelikes. The moment you get comfortable is the moment you make a stupid mistake and these games make you pay for your mistakes, usually with your life.

I don't believe so.

There are a couple of items that will up your crafting by 1 level but that is it. With out investing in a crafting skill you won't be able to craft much.

Last night I started my longest lasting "Going Rogue" difficulty character. Been having some good luck so far and have floor 2 mostly explored.

Its mostly a rogue build with 5 rogue skills 1 warrior and 1 wizard.
Alchemy, Archery, Burglary, Fleshsmithing, Fungal Arts, Staves and Tinkering

Fungal Arts level 2 for the pet and remembering to use the buffs from the mushrooms makes a huge difference for the 1st couple of floors. The biggest problem with this build is lack of inventory space with all the mushrooms, crafting parts, and potions.

On level 5 now. Doing pretty good with a sword, dual wield, and burglar. I'm using a mace though in one hand because it does insane damage even with the penalty. I think it is called the magma mace.

What exactly is the penalty for non-proficiency for melee weapons and or dual wielding?

Bad Weapon reduces damage by 28%.

They are doubling that next patch.

That's brutal considering there are no non-proficient items. I think a pure rogue build is less possible after that

Two (so far) tutorials from the dude who does great Dwarf Fortress vids:

All I've played has been a rogue. Some things that seem to help me through the first 5 levels.

1. Take Smithy. It needs to be maxed by the first level. That way, once you find the smithy on the level (or the ingredients to make steel or just iron) you can build a nice sword. An Iron or Steel longsword will go an awful long way. If you're dual wielding, they'll go through 2 levels. When you max those out (or you make them into a Knight's sword, Katana, or Falyx) they'll carry you through 5. You will be one shotting most everything before that.

2. I take x-bow now so that I can have a crossbow at the start, but I'm kind of on the fence for this. Its nice, but with a little work on the other end and patience with melee its not necessary -- especially since I can fire the weapon without being 'trained' in it as if it were a mace or axe.

3. By the time I'm getting through levels 4-5, I'm trying desperately to add defensive needs to my character. On level 5 with those stupid pumpkins, golems, mustaches, and humpers, one monster zoo will threaten to tear me apart and completely deplete my inventory. By this time, I usually have aluminum armor which is nice, but I need to dodge more!! More!!! Guh...

4. Where is my goddamn chalk! I went through four levels, scouring before I found one! ONE! thanks a lot stupid random dumb dumb.

5. Oh, if you go xbows, make sure you raise that perception. Sucks when you can't see your entire screen and you get like two shots on a mob before they close.

6. I suck. Follow none of these rules.

Check out my new character I'm working on clearing level 3:

I just got necklace +3 pierce I can't wait to try out my goodies on level 4.

Edit: back to the drawing board - boss monster destroyed me.

Here I thought my biggest death that could have been prevented was smashing the spacebar to rest and having a creature come up and eat me before realizing what was going on.

Then there was last night. I didn't have my headset on and was looking while I started hitting the spacebar to rest. Next thing I know, I'm dead! Turns out I was standing on top of an arrow trap and set it off every time I hit the spacebar.

I just had my worst death. Was standing in the doorway to the store selling and a slime hit me. I had the reactive AOE Astronomy buff and it went off hitting Brax. He then proceeded to summon demons all over the dungeon. I could not get away.

Can someone explain how haywire works? Its popped a couple times for me but I still can't figure out what it does.

Haywire chance is your character's spell critical chance. Haywire chance may affect any magical abilities. For instance, vampirism is magic-based and might critically hit due to haywire. It is also possible to summon two monsters at once due to haywire. Per patch 1.0.4, vampirism and other non-spell abilities will no longer trigger haywire. It is currently bugged (1.0.3), and only triggers on non-spell abilities.

Sorry for your loss but that's hilarious.

Guh... so my last game was going great as a rogue. I finally figured out what the heck I was doing. I realize now that there's a definite hump you have to get over at level 4. Once I passed that hump, I was rolling all the way through 8 before I got put down like a Female Doggo when I opened a monster zoo, retreated back to the teleporter only to find out that the teleporter sent me...nowhere. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Stupid Witchdoctors and their stupid spells put me down from a distance.

I think I have my setup ready for a run on dredmor himself, but keep getting killed early on normal mode. I take staff training, golemancy, mathemagic, magic training, blood mage, ley walker and burglary. My problem is not actually fighting enemies or monster zoos, but traps that deal DoT damage. I eventually just run out of healing potions. The furthest I've gotten is level 6 on normal mode. 250k score

Just had my rogue get taken out on Dlvl 8 by overconfidence. I had great gear (healing 1 hp with every step) and thought I could finish off a heavily damaged named unique in melee. He one shot me for 60+ damage.

Lesson learned - ALWAYS kill nameds with ranged weapons.

BTW, I just learned something new. You need to add "-opengl" to the launch options to get the Steam overlay working in this game. I don't know why it isn't on by default.

If it's not added you won't see your steam friend's messages of anguish when their beloved character dies until you exit the game and see the messaging window open on the desktop.

Oddly enough the steam overlay ONLY works on 3d accelerated games. Since it doesn't work without opengl that would mean either the direct3d is messed up or it renders in 2d.

In any case, opengl also got rid of my screen tearing, so I would recommend it heartily.

Well, I'm rocking as a rogue again. I have found that my setup works pretty well: Dodge, Sword, Dual Wield, Smithy, Burglary, Assassination, and Archeology.

I usually one shot half of the mobs in the dungeon, and if I don't I'm often a countershot away when they attack from their death. My stealth is so high that I actually wandered into the last two monster zoos to finish them off (its something around 55-58). I didn't realize this, but on my sword skill (and I assume with other weapons) when you buy a sword skill, it adds the bonuses you get for each weapon equipped.

I'm rocking my current run so far. Sword, Dual Wield, Armour, Rage, Assassination, Accuracy, Smithing.

One of the merchants I came across on level two had a literally EPIC shield. Max star rating. 18 magic defense. I'm a sword and board fighter now, but the second dual wield skill, Offensive Tactics does trigger even though I don't have two weapons equipped.
