NFL 2011 Post-Lockout, Pre-Season Thread

Wow. I'm sort of liking this condensed signing period. Maybe they shouldn't allow any contact with free agents until late July every year!

The best part of this offseason was: no free agency until AFTER the draft.

I wish this became permanent. Teams drafted to build their team instead of filling holes left by free agents they missed out on.

Speaking of drafts, has the GWJFFL 2011 organizational topic started yet?

Legion: You'll go mad trying to understand the Texans' personnel moves. I think it's time to ease Rick Smith out the door.

Grumps said it'll be up tonight.

Some teams still have lots of cap room. 10 teams have over $20 mil in space:

Bengals: $41 million
Jaguars: $34 million
Buccaneers: $30.2 million
49ers: $30 million
Chiefs: $28.7 million
Broncos: $26.7 million
Bills: $26.5 million
Bears: $24 million
Cardinals: $23.6 million
Seahawks: $21.2 million

No surprise, the Bengals top the list and will stay there.

Slightly surprising that the Jaguars still have so much, as they've been plenty active in free agency. They still need to give Marcedes Lewis his long-term deal, but that's unlikely to count against the 2011 cap by an amount larger than his franchise tender already is.

Choose wisely.

Ronnie Brown heads to the Eagles

Glad to see my main concern addressed

Is there anyone not signing with the Eagles?!?

I had no idea the Eagles had a change in ownership.

*sputters in rage at the mere thought*

I can't tell whom Blaine Gabbert is kissing up to more: David Garrard or *Legion*, Mr.-Wants-To-Have-Colin-Kapernick's-Babies.

It's brilliant. Gabbert says Garrard is a great QB. Then he comes in and does way better.....HOW DOES GABBERT LOOK NOW?!?! Best QB Ever.

Holy crap, the Seahawks snagged Zach Miller away from Oakland. That's really bad news for Oakland's offense. Really bad.

I'm kind of surprised by the move... Carroll is rambling on about how awesome it will be to have TWO good TE's on their team, but speculation is that the Hawks package up Carlson and a draft pick to NYG for Osi.

That actually makes a lot of sense. The asking price on Osi is a first, right? Too rich. Carlson and a pick, much more palatable.

A MLB?

The Patriots have let Ty Warren go. Apparently, Belichick was pissed that he took the summer of 2010 off to finish his college degree, even though the owner of the Patriots urged him to do so. I think that would be called "entrapment" if the government did it to you, but in this case, it's just called douchebaggery.

I'm particularly interested because Warren went to A&M, and returned there to finish his degree. I hope he lands on his feet, and for Belichick, I hope karma is a bia.

Update: Ty Warren has signed with the Broncos. He joins a defense that already features his fellow Aggie, Von Miller. Here I thought I was already pumped to check out the Broncos...

That's Kaepernick, fellow 49er faithful!

So they have, so they have. As a Giants fan, I am in awe at the great off-season the Eagles are having as far as improving their team (Sans Vince Young, lol). I am jealous and a little scared. However, rumor has it Osi is going to Seattle for a draft pick and Carlson, which is why Seattle signed Zach Miller. I think that would be an awesome move for both sides, because clearly Osi wants out, the Giants have the DEs to replace him, and they haven't signed Kevin Boss yet. Carlson is definitely an upgrade, though wouldn't mind having both, if possible.

America's game is coming to...India? Well, it'd be interesting if the touchdown celebrations were done like a Bollywood musical number.

Saints sign Aubrayo Franklin to a 1-year deal.

I have a hard time understanding why Franklin had no success in getting more than a 1-year deal. Where was Houston in this? I guess it has something to do with Franklin being 30 already. Too bad he doesn't fit the Eagles scheme - all they do these days is throw money at guys around 30.

Eagles signed two rookie WR's (Cordario Calvin & Brandon Caleb). At least that gives more options in camp while they work out what's going on with Jeremy Maclin (undisclosed health issue) and DeSean Jackson (hold-out).

I think it's hilarious that with all the moves going on that the Eagles are still $3 mil under the cap for this year, and the Cowboys are $3 mil over.

Memo to the 49ers and Raiders: free agency means you can sign players, too, not watch them leave en masse.

According to PFT (link in my last post) Raiders are $17 mil over the cap for this year. Not sure what the 49's excuse is.

Houston got Vickers, replacing Vonta Leach at fullback.

Moss to Eagles?

I think football is better if Moss plays, so I hope he ends up somewhere.

RIP Bubba Smith, aka Police Academy's Hightower.
