Dungeons of Dredmor

Finally made it down to dungeon level 7, by far my deepest attempt (normal difficulty, permadeath). Died to a haywire spellmine in a narrow corridor that I didn't see. Score: 309936

Back to the drawing board!

I'm ashamed as the furthest I've made it is the 3rd level. No, 4th level. I really need to put more time into the builds as I've been mostly playing around with all the skills so far.

My only complaint is that the randomized stuff isn't quite up to par with other roguelikes, but that's the part of a roguelike that will be forever iterated on. Those algorithms are difficult.

One thing that confuses me right now is the crafting. I'm not sure where to go with it as there are almost too many options. Still trying to wrap my head around everything.

I've been concentrating on just smithing to work through crafting. I think one craft skill per character is probably best, otherwise I'd explode from having to decide which potential ingredients to drop when my bag is full.

Find a room in a cleared-out area and just dump your crafting resources there. When you decide to craft something, just go there. Works better than worrying about carrying everything around with you all the time.

Had a really frustrating death yesterday. Was only on level 2 but went through a teleporter and wound up surrounded on all sides by Deths. Couldn't move to run away or go back through the teleporter so couldn't do anything except get pounded on until I died.

Dredmor has fallen to Mister Biggles the Fencer!

Invisibility potion to set the field (to escape the room once I saw him), potions of just about every flavor, and a grunge ear mushroom for resistances. Much easier to handle!

Hm. I could have sworn that game was started on Normal difficulty, but it only unlocked the easy (/w permadeth) achievements.

A Winner is You! I wonder if you're the first one of GWJ lineage to put him into the dirt. I've only made it to level five so far.
Is the ending anything interesting? I've heard one person say that they felt cheated, and other say that they thought it was fitting and amusing. I'm hoping we get at least equal resolution as was opened in the intro; two screens of text & images seems like a reasonable expectation. Hopefully something more than 'Congratulations! Restart Game? Y/N?'

I'll wait until the next patch to dig back in, but I'm already intrigued by some of the mod-tools in progress for the thing. A Gaslampgames forum member has already developed working injectors for armor, weapons, food, and drink, with customizable sprites and effects. Seems like a good sign.

Sigh. I can't believe I just sold my anvil.

Just... you know, ask for it back. That shopkeep seems like a pretty reasonable guy.

You're about spot on for the ending. It didn't exactly feel like a commensurate reward for the 10 floors of grindy mcgrinderson.

The big question, will you play again, Tyrian? I played about 20 hours total and think I've petered out on the gameplay of this. I was hoping for a little more roguelike than it has offered, so I switched to Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup which I've been loving for its character depth, enemy variety, level construction, and that it hasnt neglected some of the Rogue tropes that I find important like unidentified items and partially random dungeon branching.

I have sunk in about 10 hours and never made it deeper than level 3. I think i might be approaching boredom with it but I can't tell.

It's a good question. Honestly, I'm not sure if I will or not. I mean, I've got more than 20hrs in it now, which is a pretty good value for the $4.50 I paid.

But now that I've seen the bottom of the game, I'm not sure if I'd bother to go through again on harder difficulties just to see that ending again.

Anyone else have the compulsion to clear out every level before moving on?

I definitely do. Having never played a rougelike before I was going to ask on here if that was normal or not. Because of this compulsion I have still never made it past the 1st floor. Also I'm terrible.

You're normally limited by a hunger meter, so exploring every level is not necessarily an option.

That's one thing that this game needs. It's too easy to just sit in a quiet spot and hammer the space bar to get out of a jam.

I would also like to see unidentified items and/or some kind of randomized item effect. Eventually you can get to know what every mushroom and potion does.

Regardless, I don't expect to see success any time soon, if ever. I suspect I'll hit the boredom point before then.

So, I gather from peoples comments that you can sell things. Do you just sell them to the cat thing or is there some other place (I have yet to successfully reach level 2)? I can't figure out how to interact with the cat thing other than the time I set him on fire.

Drag and drop items on to Brax and he will give you a price. You can also shift click items in your pack while in a shop to quick-sell them.

Holy crap does a Monster Zoo ever end? I came back up a level to sell some stuff and buy a piece of armor when I ran into a Monster Zoo. I ran for a bit, buffed myself and then found a good spot to kill things, but it seems to never end.

Since I ran I can't see how many monsters there really are, so it's just a stream of things to kill. I went up a level though. Thank god there's no depreciation of the armor and weapons.

Edit: Nvm. There's an achievement to clearing out a monster zoo. Can do.

How exactly are uberchests unlocked? I've opened a couple both with and without lockpicks but I don't know how I did it.

Apparently marking unopened uberchests on the map is one of the most requested features. Oh well, I've only gotten weapons from them so far, and I'm a monk so I don't use them anyway. So far I've done pretty well, anything that threatens me gets (literally) kicked across the room.

Pull every lever you see and some of them will open the uber chests. Some levers do other things but there's no real reason not to pull every single one that I've seen.

There should a number on the right side of the screen indicating how many monsters were left. I guess if you run away the number disappears?

The numbers don't go away (not sure about if you go up a level and come back down). I had a 48 monster monster zoo this morning. I once had an 111 monster one.

The number of monsters left should be right below your mini-map.

So possibly some of the chests are unlocked and pulling a random lever locks them? Thats evil!

It aggravates me that after 20+ years of playing Roguelikes that I will still do some really dumbass things.

I was on my second-best run, had almost cleared the 3rd level (the Doom level, I love that!), when I found a Monster Zoo (43 monsters). I managed to clear it out but stupidly opened a door to the next room before fully healing up. Only to find a Deth party in there. Continuing the stupid theme, I tried to fight, got surrounded, couldn't disengage, and got killed. Stupid stupid stupid!

Yeah, I've found that I tend to either die right away or once I'm down on about the third level and start getting cocky.

Does anyone know what the game's native resolution is? The graphic scaling works very well and things stay nice and smooth. But I'm wondering what the original un altered graphics look like.

I keep dying to the most inane, stupid stuff. Like trying to disarm a trap, or accidentally drinking the wrong potion, or shooting an arrow only to find out it has an area of effect ability.

This is why I have yet to reach level 2 after four characters.

I have a thing for those poison traps. I'll keep clicking it to disarm it, dammit, but all I do it keep getting hit. It says 45%, but I'm pretty sure it means 5%.
