OOTP 12 League?

In!

Wish Brooklyn was in there, but hey.

Hi
I am DONAN's brother and am ready to "PLAY BALL." Have had to endure Mariners last few years (still a fan, though frustated) and feel OOTP is a great alternative. By managing a team may develope an appreciation for management. lol

Welcome!

I wonder if changing that New York team to Brooklyn will have an impact.

Also, with just eight teams per league, only division winners make the playoffs now.

Alright, I count what... six owners? Seven including me. And changing city names is just as simple as a text edit, the game isn't quite advanced enough to take into account things like population size and attractiveness of a city yet. The only real effect it'd have would be weather.

Can we consider changing the rating from 1-20 to 20-80? I undersand as the range is larger the number is more accurate, which makes for easier scouting.

I'm going to say we shouldn't, as that's part of the game's mystery. Looking a prospect or potential trade, and judging your scout's valuation of his ability against his actual stats, and trying to make the smart deal.

Alright, i've re-worked the league. EDIT: Two leagues of eight teams, split into two divisions of four. Teams are as follows:

Northern League - Eastern Division:

Baltimore
Boston
Brooklyn
Pittsburgh

Northern League - Western Division:

Denver
Portland
Seattle
Vancouver

Southern League - Eastern Division:

Atlanta
Charlotte
Miami
New Orleans

Southern League - Western Division:

Dallas
Los Angeles
Phoenix
San Diego

Also, RE: the inaugural fantasy draft, I left that to the AI so it balances out the talent. I did it with a fixed budget of $90M for each team, so everyone's on an even keel to start. There's only a $10M difference between the highest and lowest payrolls.

Ok. I'll take Seattle or San Diego (I have other choices too if others have a real need for these two).

Also, it's been quite awhile since I've used FTP (which I take it, is the way we will be transferring files to the Commish). Any place to go for a refresher on how to use? Which one to use? Etc.

Thanks!

Also, I'll list names at beginning of this thread, or if you want to start a more current on Pred' and do it. Just let me know.

Pred, for the playoffs are you going to do 3-day sims instead of a week?

And did you go with that All Sim Baseball site? If so, do we have an ETA on our site being live?

List of names added to first post of thread as of 20 July, 2011.

If we want to do this AllSimBaseball thing to make things easier on the commish I'm more than happy to cover the cost, pitch in, or whatever. Anything to make it more fun and less work for the commish is well worth it.

Pretty sure everyone is just being nice and not putting any pressure on Prederick about getting the league started.
I'm happy with all the rules, league structure, etc. and I'm excited about getting the show on the road.

Pred, let us know if there's anything else you need us to do.

Hey all, sorry for the radio silence. The first week of august sounds like the best start date for me though, although if anyone desperately wants to start sooner, i'll see what I can do.

Alright.

According to page one, we've got seven interested parties? Great. Everyone please specify the team they'd like to take control of, of all the teams listed in this post. I'm about to pull the trigger on a website over at AllSimBaseball, so i'm hoping "opening day" will be within a week.

If you'd prefer a team be moved closer to your town/city, say so. This is a fictional league, so I don't really give a crap if your team is in podunkville, be please note it may (may, i'm unfamiliar with the specifics) affect your Local Media Contract, along with other things (don't everyone move to NYC at once ).

I am tentatively scheduling Opening Day for August 5th, with the first sim happening the following Monday (August 8th). I will be creating a specific GWJ League thread sometime soon, so if you have any last minute concerns, comments, issues, PLEASE bring them up now, and not, say, six weeks after the All-Star break. That would make me a sad panda.

Sidenote: If there's anything i've learned from having played 5-7 seasons now, familiarizing yourself with some Sabermetric stats isn't a bad thing. FIP has saved me from some awful signings and gotten me some gems already.

Give me Baltimore please.

Edit: To add a little context to our league, Baltimore is where I was born. We moved west of B-more when I was 4, but after my parent's divorce my father eventually moved back to the outskirts of the city. And then I went to college right outside the city and I worked in the city. So, basically, I'm from Baltimore and I'd like to see a winning baseball team in Baltimore again.

Hello to all.
I will go with any team to help fill out division. Team doesn't matter to me. Does that help?
(Actually I guess would prefer a team from the east coast since I retire early in the evening.)

I'd like Boston, or Pittsburgh as a backup. If you're trying to balance out the number of human commishes per division I'll just take whatever team is needed.

+1 to this. You really need to understand what all those advanced stats mean to play efficiently as a GM. FIP is a great example, because a ground ball pitcher with a great defensive infield backing him up is going to look drastically better than when he gets traded/signed to a poor defensive team. If enough folks are in the dark about this sort of stuff we can take it to a separate thread to discuss advanced stats and their implications. By the way, if you couldn't already tell, I love this sort of stuff :).

Man I wish I had the time and mental energy for this! Good luck guys!

Sounds like someone wants to be convinced to join. Just keep in mind you can play as little or as much as you'd like. You can have the AI do a bunch of crap for you. If all you want to do it set your lineups, then do it. Only want to do trades and drafts? Do it.

Don't be the oddball man out.

Pittsburgh is mine!!
Should we have team names as well? I want to be the Pittsburgh Fighting Pierogies!

Stats be damned. It's all about the team name.

Brooklyn, naturally. I would love team names too! Not that I know which one I would want, but I'm sure I could think of SOMEthin'.

Okay, well, we're gonna be the Baltimore Bridgeburners.

Like a bolt from the blue the Brooklyn Sandwiches are reporting for deliciousness (and solid fundamentals).

DO IT!

Pick something dude:)

San Diego Surfers for me.

Given that the in-game team nicknames are already utterly ridiculous, your team name can be whatever you want, as long as it's not ludicrously vulgar/offensive. I don't want to see anything in my feed about the Miami Sh*tting D*cknipples (although, let's be honest, that'd be hi-freaking-larious).

EDIT: Sidenote... the league commish's email addy is Prederick at gmail dot com. For simplicity, and so he can yell at you if neccessary, send him an e-mail listing your team, and the nickname you'd like so he can begin putting this abomination together. T-Minus 9 days to opening day people!

I just sent you what you requested, but it just dawned on me, is the GM Name the one I used when I first signed into the on-league module (which I did a week ago or so). So is that the name (Donevyn) the one I should of given you? (I gave you another at time of post).

Also, for us new folks. Can you give us a check list of steps on how this all proceeds, and what needs to be done?
(and as mentioned before, I've not use ftp in a long while. What do I need to get to do that, or is it in OOTP?

Thanks!

I'm in. I haven't played OOTP since version 9, but this sounds like fun. Also, I can offer assistance with hosting and website if we need it. I'd like the Dallas team if it is still available. (My Rangers are playing good baseball.) I assume we are going with a 'fantasy' (non-historical) league -- no real players right?

Nope, all-fictional league. Drop me an e-mail so I know your preferred team nickname and I have you in my address book.

So here's our owners list thus far -

Pittsburgh Fighting Pierogies - Novocain

Baltimore Bridgeburners - garion333

San Diego Surfers - Donan

Boston Waving Whiteflags - Landshrk83

So slumberland, mitchson, jakeleg, drop me an e-mail with all the relevant information and we'll inch ever-closer to opening day.

I think I understand what you're confused about, so let me try to explain. Your GM name is whatever you want it to be. If you want to be known as Lord Balderdash, then i'll enter your username as that. If you started up a different league for your own fun (I have), it doesn't transfer or or anything. Whatever you want it to be, it will be. Right now, i'm just going to leave everyone's GM names as their forum names, unless everyone here is okay with using their real names.

As far as how this works, it's really, really easy. The commish handles pretty much all of the simming, so all a user would do is download the most recent league file, check his team, set his lineups/staff, maybe make some transactions, and then export a team file, and either e-mail it to the commish who will then upload it to the server, or upload it to the server yourself via FTP.

My team: Dallas Dirigibles

Nothing evokes speed, grace, and power like a blimp.

Do we have a name for the league yet? Something perfunctory like GWJBBL? Or something with more panache? Any ideas?

One question for those who have played online leagues in both OOTP 11 & 12: is the league update process any faster in the new version? I play in an OOTP 11 league at the moment and you basically have to re-download the entire save file structure for the league whenever a week's worth of sim is published.

I'm interested in joining, but I'm not sure I'm as interested in doubling up on 5-10 minutes of download time with another league. Maybe AllSimBaseball helps alleviate some of that?
