NFL 2011 Post-Lockout, Pre-Season Thread

Vince Young officially cut.

It's funny. If this were a year earlier, I wouldn't call $20 mil guaranteed for a young quarterback such a high price for a promising 26-year-old quarterback. Hell, I would almost call it cheap. Sam Bradford, after all, was drafted and given $50 million guaranteed, having played 0 NFL games.

However, the rookie wage scale changes the picture substantially. Now, the numbers drop way off. The #9 pick (Tyron Smith) just signed a deal for 4 years, $12.5 million (all guaranteed, but that's the entirety of his money unless the Cowboys exercise the 5th year option).

Kolb's deal would have been considerably cheaper than 1st round QBs in the past, but now, one could almost fit both Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert (picks #8 and #10) into Kolb's deal.

Picking a QB high is no longer a team killer. Now, it's the financially prudent way to go. All those teams that took 1st round QBs this year just got extremely lucky.

tl;dr The Cardinals should've drafted a QB.

It's hard to fault a team for drafting Patrick Peterson. But they let other teams get ahead of them and draft up the top-of-2nd-round QBs.

Tweets abound of Chad Ochocinco signing with...the Patriots. Over/under on the Hoodie making him change his last name back to Johnson?

confirmed on NFL Network. oh snap.

Actually, you're right, I can't fault them for drafting Peterson. I forgot about that.

Panthers news: WR Steve Smith staying; TE Greg Olsen coming over from the Bears for a draft pick and a player, both tbd.

I'm starting to like what's going on here.

Good move by Panthers. Olson is in his prime and underutilized.

Jaguars sign Clint Session from the Colts, completing their linebacker group. Another guy that's young and entering his prime. Kind of a repeat of the Mike Peterson signing a few years ago, hopefully with equally good results.

Daryl Smith, Posluszny, and Session is a pretty damn good group. Now, about those safeties...

The secondary is looking like the Achilles Heel for Jacksonville, very surprising considering they play in the same division as the Colts... if that D-Line doesn't pan out they will be in a world of hurt.

The safeties are the biggest issue, as their struggles have made the cornerbacks look worse than they really are, though there is room for another player at that spot, too.

I think the Jags see Posluszny and Session as long-term building blocks, given their age. The defensive backs they sign are more likely to be more veteran and less long-term.

Absolutely, he's a great pickup. The stupid bastards.

Olson gets to be the Zach Miller to Cam's JaMarcus.

Now we get to find out if Olson is a good receiving TE or not.

David Akers signs with the Niners.

Raiders newest cheerleader is a grandmother

She looks way older than 37 in the face. More like 57.

EDIT: Not that I wouldn't.

I'm surprised New England doesn't want to sign him.

Well that didn't take long: Saints replace Bush with Sproles

Vince Young to the Eagles.

I hate to say it, but it's a great move for them. They can install the 'running QB' offense and not miss a beat when Vick gets hurt.

Yeah, but his glass ego won't last long once he gets showered with Philly-style boo birds. Wait, did that sound too much like *Legion*?

The Twitter machine coughed up this from Jon Beason: "Turn on the tube. Jon Beason the highest paid MLB (middle linebacker) in the league. The news breaks now."

What a difference, etc. etc. Carolina hasn't been so active in several years in (1) spending and (2) getting above-average free agents. It would be nice if they find another receiver, some depth on the O-line and a couple of reliable DBs, but still.

This is a long way from last year's to-hell-with-it attitude. A long way.

Oh, and Cam Newton will be wearing No. 1, baby! Let's hope that's a self-fulfilling prophecy and not capital-I Irony.

I really like Sproles, and he strikes me as a more durable option for the Saints.
I hope he does well in NO, except for in their first regular season game

So Houston has agreed to a deal with Bengals CB Jonathan Joseph. They're also rumored to be in the running for Bears S Daniel Manning.

Part of me is happy for the upgrades(s), but another part of my is sorry we didn't go harder for Asomugh. Is it even feasible for Houston to sign him as well as Joseph? Probably not, but I can't find any information on their cap numbers for this year. Considering they let Akoye and Anderson go, I'm guessing they are close to the cap.

So can getting a good CB and (possibly) S fix the 'Olè' defense? I'm dubious, but if our offense can keep doing what it does and the D can improve to even 15th, I think we're in the playoffs.

hoppa - Manning is now a done deal for Houston. So we have added both a corner and safety. I'm feeling fairly optimistic.

This gets talked about a lot, but McNabb did very well and certainly seems to have a fragile ego now. I think QB's in Philly may get beaten up by the press/fans, but it sure looks like the team knows how to keep them performing.

Jaguars reportedly agree to 5-year deal with Dawan Landry, but it can't be signed until 4:00pm EST.

I think he was the second best safety in free agency after Weddle, so that's a pretty good consolation prize after Weddle returned to San Diego.

Still a possibility that the Jaguars pursue one of the lesser free agent safeties in addition to Landry, although the market is heating up.
