Dungeons of Dredmor

I've made it down to lvl3, having cleared lvls 1 and 2. Ran into a monster zoo on lvl2, but had an easy choke point nearby. This made it feasible to lure a few mobs out, kill them, and repeat. Some of the named entities were tough, but I managed to clear it out.

I love that monsters can trigger traps in the dungeon. It's fun to randomly get XP.

I need more bag space! PACKRAT!

Still no horadric lutefisk cube, so I've been selling everything to the shopkeeps.

Up to using some enchanted fine steel swords now, though they're not exactly super awesome. Most enemies on lvl3 are dying in one strike (dual wield). Blasted Anvil cursed my aluminum breastplate.

I just found my first zoo as well. I bugged out of there in the interest of self preservation.

Monsters triggering traps YES! It's fantastic to see a nasty beast get taken down by randomly stumbling into traps. I hope that we see some monsters that hate each other; it would be great to have some monster-on-monster battles going on that we might stumble on.

Don't forget to let your character sit idle for 30+ seconds at least once; an amusing idle animation will start to play.

I found a bolt of mass destruction that made a whopping explosion when I fired it off; I'm really enjoying the wide variety of ammunition in the game.

If only I could find some ingots! I've not found a single one yet, so I've been unable to make any new bolts.

I highly recommend sticking a horadric lutefisk cube into another horadric lutefisk cube. The result is quite awesome.

This game is scary addictive, replace the "one more turn" syndrome of turn based stuff like Civ with "one more door".

I am really enjoying this, finally. Up to 3rd level on Easy, but still on the first level of the dungeon. I will crank it up to Standard difficulty when this guy dies, I promise.

I like guiding monsters into traps. I'm also enjoying the general weirdness of the game. Anyone see the ingredients of the Grog? It includes a reference to a well-known adventure gaming programming system...

There are lots of references to other games in there. I found a Dwarf Fortress one; an item with a description that included "All craftdwarfship is... pretty crappy actually"

Most of the ore names are straight from DF too. (Except the plastic)

Did it menace with spikes of anything?

My love for this game grows with my bodycount.

I stopped to play a few turns of Ascension on my iPhone, only to look up and see Rutabaga (my 7th character) doing the same thing.

I've spotted Jurassic Park and Sergio Leone references, as well. Love it.

I know I have died more than 10 times but my scoreboard only shows my top 10 scores. I think I put my deaths between 25 to 30 and I expect that number to rise, rise, rise.

Does anyone know how I can see my entire graveyard?

hiscores.txt file in your Documents/Gaslamp Games/Dungeons of Dredmore folder has your full graveyard. Its funny I was just looking at that. My lowest scoring guy:

Zargon the Poleman
60
from a buff wearing off.

Woohoo - four hours of play time and I've finally got a character who's cleared level 1 and on to level 2

I expect to be slaughtered again shortly...

Check in your Documents/GasLamp Games/Dungeons of Dredmor folder for a hiscores.txt. It (may) contain the full list.

Whoops! Got Tannpusher'd there.

This game has a great way of making you feel big in the britches and then taking you down a peg. I was the supreme overboss in the first two levels, and then mere steps after entering level 3 I was sandwiched between an Octy and a djinn and mercilessly pounded (sounds like a fanfic setup there). Fun!

It was my first game, and I've lasted longer each game since then. Hooray for progress!

I found my first Monster Zoo last night (111 monsters in there!). Thank goodness it was near a choke point and situated in such a way that I could duck down a hall with only a couple of monsters following me so I could heal up occasionally. Also, Acid Bottle Bolts are pretty awesome.

111?! That's what a Monster Zoo is? Yowch. I thought I had it bad when I found a dozen behind Door #2.

Monster zoos are blue colored rooms on the map. I've had at least one per floor, and am still clearing out the one on floor five. (Doors are your friend. Close 'em when you need to.)

I did not have one on floor1, but there's been one ever since. Usually 3 stores, too. Bought some 10* armor of the archmage, which is rather decent. Now, if Krong will be kind and make my weapons more awesomer, that'd be keen.

The enemy numbers get outrageous sometimes but goddamn this a good funny game.

Exactly this sh*t right here is why Steam owns me, my pc, all my money.

Be careful if you find a wiggling tentacle wand; I zapped a few bats with it and as far as I can tell their corpses started exploding. I took about 30 damage and bit the big one before I could escape the zany conflagration.

Thanks. So far I have died 20 times. Top score is Blood Thief with 2,680 killed by the player (wow, that 'player' sure is a murder machine huh?). Lowest score is 0 from Vlad the Footman who died because God didn't like him.

Okay, so no bugs for me so far, but I finally got around to picking this up (work has been hell this week) and played my first match. I lasted about 10 minutes before opening a door and being confronted with 8 or so of those bat things. I died and had no choice about it.

I want to play more.

Goddamn you, roguelikes. God bless you, roguelikes.

Sigh. Was doing well, had almost cleared the second level... and accidentally right-clicked a shopkeeper. Oops.

Sigh. Longest run yet at max difficulty. Killed some monsters on level 2, doing good, doing good, the experience was nice, and then BAM - Monster Zoo. So that's what a Monster Zoo is. I could tell. There was a bajillion monsters and two big words gleefully shouting MONSTER ZOO!.

I retreated to first level, killed some monsters, because I am a vampire I only heal through potions, blood and corpses.

Then I went back and died to a enraged diggle. F-ing diggles.

Score 11,924.

This game sounds like fun. Is it one that I can play without really having knowledge of any older rogue-type games or would that really help me? I remember that you had to remember a billion different ascii characters and what everything was. Never quite made it past that

I'm still on my first character on Easy. About finished with the third level of the dungeon. I've noticed that the old, old memories of rogue and the like are guiding me. Definitely going to crank the difficulty up next time.

I had fun with the monster zoo on the third level. It had about 60 or creatures, maybe more. I stood in the doorway and fired off my Bolt of Mass Destruction, then my last Squid Bolt, and then when something survived long enough, I threw bombs at it and it's friends. I still almost died, but the mayhem was awesome as the AOEs hang around for the back ranks to advance into. Great fun.

No crashes since the first one.

Robear wrote:

Yeah the patch fixed my crashes (it was happening occasionally when the music track changed I think). Haven't had any problems since. Apart from the ones where I keep getting killed, of course

Robear the Footman, died on level 4. "He crushed like a mechanism." 41,248 on Easy.

I think you can. You can play it as a dungeon romp that happens to have randomly generated levels if you want (turn off permadeath, maybe crank it back to Easy if you want more "romp"). The connections to Rogue seem a little tenuous at this distance.
