NCAA Football 2012 game catch-all

I started a dynasty with the Georgia Bulldogs, and played my first game against Boise State just now. They nailed the game play, at least at first blush. It plays a lot like NCAA 11, but things are much more smooth. In hindsight, you could tell in NCAA 11 when the tackle animations were starting, but that's gone in 12.

I'm loving it so far.

You know you're a geek when....

And the first basic PS3 named rosters are up. PSN name is gamingtailgate

Article here.

Just named, and some duplicates eliminated. Nothing huge, but hey it's a decent enough start.

I think the custom playbook function is broken. Pretty frustrating to put 4 hrs into your dream boom only for it to glitch out. Was able to see it one in practice mode before the play call screen went completely blank. Very frustrated. EA quality shines through.

Seen some bug reports about not being able to pick a play and then your guys just go on the field in a big mass huddle.

And yeah as much as RtG is improved this year, it still pales in comparison to NBA2k11's My Player mode. For example in My Player you get a rating for your performance. Lots of little things you do during the game give you positive/negative points towards that. Running the right lane on fast breaks, setting picks, making good passes, all positives. You don't have to score a ton of points and dominate the game. You just have to run things within the offense, block out your man, play good defense, and you will make a good grade. If you allow your man to score, turnover the ball, etc, those are all negatives.

In NCAA RtG I get a star rating and some xp after the game. But I get no feedback during the game that I'm doing anything right. And so far, though 4 games of high school, every rating has been 1 star and somewhere between 40-60 recruiting points per game. Despite having a 5-catch, 125yd, 1TD game, I still just got 1 star. So despite covering my man well or playing my zone properly, I'm not getting hardly anything on defense. And even though I had one missed tackle that led to a 60 yd TD for the other team, I get no penalty either.

2k just feels so much better. Constant feedback as you play, actually making you better at the game, while giving you xp to make your character better as well. Constant learning, improvement, understanding, and fun.

RtG still just feels so disconnected.

Too early to judge in high school mode, but I hope they fixed some of the horrible coaching and/or player AI from last year. I can't count the number of times we had the ball under 1 minute, with the other team having no timeouts, and yet the coach/QB would call QB Kneel, but hike the ball with 30 seconds on the play clock instead of running it down and we'd end up punting on 4th down, instead of the game being over.

The customization is pretty sweet in online leagues. You can redo conferences AND lock in rivalry games into the league schedule.

Oh apparently I misinterpreted the star at the end of the game. Nothing to do with my performance. Just the xp reward for that. And then as you accumulate xp for the high school season you gain stars as a recruit. Seems like 0-199 = 1*, 200-299 = 3*, and so on?

So I don't know if the xp rewards are consistent every game or based on the length of the season. Seems like you could just play the longest 11-game HS season and get to be a 5* recruit pretty easily.

Think I stuck with the default 9, and 6 games in I already have several scholarship offers from 1/2* schools and almost there with some 3* ones.

It's very tempting to talk a bunch of my old classmates who I know play NCAA into helping to pit together rosters for our conference.

Stele - that's the problem I had. Going to try again and see if it is consistent.

Uh which part?

I can't count the number of times we had the ball under 1 minute, with the other team having no timeouts, and yet the coach/QB would call QB Kneel, but hike the ball with 30 seconds on the play clock instead of running it down and we'd end up punting on 4th down, instead of the game being over.

This definitely happened in one of my closer HS games last night. We were up 7, the other team ran out of time outs, we stopped them on 4th down and took over with 49 seconds left. Despite the QB Kneel being called and the playclock being so long, we ended up in a 3rd and 14 after two kneels with still around 30 seconds on the clock. Luckily on that play the QB did wait until the play clock ran down to 2 before finally hiking the ball, so time did actually run out during the play. But if he'd done that on the QB kneel on downs 1 and 2, there never would have been a 3rd down. So stupid.

Every AI opponent you play in an exhibition or dynasty mode is smart enough to use "conservative clock" and run the play clock down under 10. But your own team in RtG is too dumb for that. Very frustrating. You'd think since they actually did expand the mode this year they would have fixed some things like that.

Stele,

Sorry i had the playbook corruption issue. No playart and players coming out of the huddle in a big group mass. Deleted the playbook and going to start over.

I started making a playbook but got interrupted for dinner or something last night. Guess I should try it out.

It's great for me because I hate wasted plays and I love certain formations, but you can't find certain plays because it is scattered about in different team play books even though it is the same formation. I love compression and spread and it's tough to find that in a college playbook.

Yeah. I enjoy the I form and pro form quite a bit, with a little shotgun sprinkled in here and there. I guess I want a traditional NFL style offense.

Mr Gumpypants himself has some positive impressions on NCAA 12. I love Bill Abner's reviews, but he can be pretty hard on games, and in particular sports games. that's fine, as I think he provides an honest look at what is going on in a game. I can decide if what is bugging him is going to bug me. But Abner always provides a good honest take based on a lot of time with a game.

Anyway, over the years, to say that I have had a love/hate relationship with NCAA from EA Sports is sort of like saying the Romans had a love/hate thing going on with the Visigoths. There was a time when everything was joyous and then over the years the relationship turned poisonous and next thing you know we’re in the Dark Ages.

With NCAA 12, continuing this admittedly weird analogy, we could be entering the era of Charlemagne, which would lead to the Crusades and then enlightenment. We just have to hope that the Vikings (in this case gameplay bugs) don’t show up and start screwing up the plan.

In other words, I think I like NCAA 12.

Got my playbook finished, mostly.

Made it through a 2-min quarter game without bugs.

Also got the achievement for winning without scoring an offensive TD. So maybe my playbook still needs some work.

Had 4 INTs though, one pick-6, so my D is solid.

Now that I made it to college, RtG seems a little better.

Instead of xp, you get coach trust points for doing things right during practice and games. You get xp too for stats I guess. But for things like "good zone defense" or "lead blocking" on a punt return, I get coach trust points.

At least that's something.

They also ditched all the going to class and daily schedule crap from last year and went with a dynasty interface. Probably for the best. I didn't mind the between game videos and RtG presentation, but the interface was a pain in the ass last year. Having to sim practice but play the study/workout events was very tedious. Now you go into one practice for the week, get your 25 reps in, earn some xp and coach trust, then play your game. Much more fluid and gets you from week to week faster, and practice is actually worthwhile now.

Jayhawker wasn't wrong about super sim being pretty messed up in the other thread.

Seeing a lot of it during RtG. Possessions go by in a matter of seconds rather than minutes.

And just had a really strange one where we stopped a team on 3rd down, I hit "sim until next play" button and then was back on the field in 20 seconds or so. I looked to see what happens, and there is no 4th down play listed for the other team. No punt, no rush, no pass, no turnover, just nothing. Only 3 plays listed for their possession, and suddenly it was our ball. Very strange.

Thanks for the heads up on super sim. That's the first I've ever heard of that. As Jayhawker rightly pointed out way back in the 2* thread, I'm a heavy user of super sim. Mostly so my games go quicker and because I suck at defense. However, I don't like the idea of getting minutes worth of extra possessions as a result of my laziness. I'll have to keep an eye on that.

Seems that my RtG estimate was only half right. If you sim from the sim screen then your coach is dumb and doesn't run down the clock in the last minute when you have a lead. But if you "watch the play" with R1, then they do seem to wait.

Or maybe it was just the HS games that were broken? Maybe it's only broken when you're on offense and the QB snaps it early for you? I don't know for sure.

Made a copy of my RtG player when I had Signing Day, and am playing the Safety version first. Might go back and play WR as well. Then again I might just have to replay the HS part to try to get the 5* recruit achievement someday.

Anyway I'm getting better at FS. Up to 3 INTs now. Still got burned on a couple plays when I beat the WR to the spot, try to jump, and he somehow catches it. It's weird like the jump button makes me jump out of the way and lets him catch? Perhaps I should just be using L1 and trying to knockdown passes? Bah.

So anyone found any good sliders for AA yet? I've loaded SN's from Operations Sports but have yet to give them a try.

Also, anyone found an enjoyable non-custom playbook yet? I typically run Multiple, I think I used Texas A&Ms for my one game with Nebraska so far.

I've used Multiple for years now so I'm sticking with it.

My play books are done on both sides of the ball. Working my way through a Dynasty with Oregon. Sob far my D is stronger than my O which is unusual.

Getting really sick of RtG, hoping the rosters get done tomorrow so I can start dynasty.

It gets better when you can call a handful of plays yourself, I've definitely made some big plays with those. But sometimes the 3 choices are all identical. Cover 4, Cover 4, Cover 4, when it's a tie game and they have the ball at midfield? Might as well just give up and let them have the game cause they're going to get a field goal as time expires playing that soft D.

Also can't count how many times that holding X for CPU assist has taken me so far out of position to give the other team wide open plays. I've seen passes of 74, 80, 80, 94, and 98 against me this season because the CPU guarantees I'm getting beat. Also doesn't help with the switching camera BS as the ball goes over my head. On those plays where I could still have a chance to catch the guy, that's impossible after the camera swings with the ball in midair and I take 3 steps the wrong direction.

Also, it's sickening seeing Pryor leading the Heisman voting and Ohio St undefeated and #1. Even though the names are random, since you can't use custom rosters for RtG, there's no way to delete him from the team.

Yeah I posted that already last page, you filthy skimmer.

They're just a basic rename, with no edits. Tyrel Pryor is still super awesome starting QB at Ohio St and so on. I could make edits myself, but it's worth waiting another 2 days for buckeye02 at Operation Sports to finish his.

I did actually make edits to gamingtailgates for UofL but just to play some exhibition and practice with to try out my playbook and grab some trophies.

But theoretically it's worth waiting a couple more days for more accurate rosters to start a dynasty that I will likely spend weeks or months playing here and there.

Fairedales are done. I think he is going to do coaches soon.

There is some word on the OS forums that his rosters may have inadvertently altered some QB's tendencies. Hopefully it is not going to be a big deal.

Jay/Stele,

Once the "good" rosters/coaches are up should we all download the same ones for our dynasty? Or can the commish do it only for the league. I haven't downloaded the rosters before, but I'm assuming it's similar to when you download a created team. Thanks!

Yeah for you 360 guys, Fairdale Kings (from Louisville!) are up.
