Time Flies When You're Playing in the Pile

Super C
I recently had a bit of time to kill, so I decided to watch an NES game let's play and chose this title. The video inspired me to give it another shot - the first in at least a decade. The fact is, Super C is still a joy to play all these years later and still challenging, albeit easier than I remember it being. Certainly, there are some gotcha spots, but overall I had far less trouble with it than I remembered having in the past - no doubt helped by sticking to the spread gun for the entire game. Surprisingly, many of the bosses were complete pushovers, especially the last boss, once you figure out where to stand. Truly, the stages were typically much more challenging, but mostly tight controls left even them manageable in almost all spots.

In short, this one is worth revisiting. Now to give Contra 4 on the DS another go. You should hear my cursing in the distance by the time you read this.

I loved SuperC and beat it tons of times back in the day, thanks to a heavy favoring of the spread gun, but sometimes picking up the flame gun where the ceiling drops in one of the later levels. I've only ever tried a little bit of Contra 4, (gave it to the wife before we married) and it's just plain brutal. Good luck.

1942: Joint Strike just toppled on XBLA.

I didn't declare it, and I didn't intend beating it this month, but I'm getting close to my Palindrome Score of the Beast challenge for Gravey (66,666) so I needed to pick up an uneven GS achievement. This one was it.

Back to HL2 tomorrow, but I think the episodes may dribble into next month. We'll see how well the kids sleep over the weekend, and if this lovely Winter weather has set in, and all my weekend chores get 'rained out' (fingers crossed).

I finished Half-Life 2. My opinions from above still stand, but I do think they did a good job on the ending. The last two levels were distinctly different from the rest of the game, and I think they ended on a good note.

I'll do the episodes eventually, but for now, I need a break on all things Half-Life.

Finished Dungeon Siege (sans expansion pack).

BY THE BUSHY BEARDED GAMING GODS OF OLD THIS GAME WAS BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING!

I don't think I've ever played an more unrelentingly DULL 'RPG'.

At least Space Siege had the good manners to be short. This is 20 hours of killing trash mobs in a corridor (albeit an occasionally quite pretty corridor - the lava in the last area is quite lovely).

Anyone complaining that Dungeon Siege 3 should be more like the older Dungeon Siege games needs to replay a few hours of this....they'll quickly change their minds. Thankfully, Dungeon Siege 2 is a distinct improvement over this, so when I finally get around to finishing that it'll hopefully be less of a trial.

Of course...I still have to get through the DS1 expansion pack first

OH, and the best part. After killing the end boss a whole bunch of loot dropped (none of which was more powerful than stuff I'd gotten several hours earlier) and then before i could pick any of it up it automatically loaded the epic fina cutsce....oh no, wait...

....it just dropped me back to the main menu.

Great.

HA! Ok it looks like I didn't miss much - the ending seems to be just three or four static text screens with some voice over. A fitting reward for finishing this game I think you'll agree.

*sigh*

NEXT UP : Marvel - Ultimate Alliance.

I seem to be on something of an Action RPG binge at the moment Probably wont finish this before the month is up so I'll carry it forward.

A week to go and the wife and I are on the home stretch of Lego Indiana Jones 2. We finished up the second last hub last night, and plan on taking a chunk out of the final hub this evening. It's a busy week for both of us this week, so we may not make it.... but we're going to try.

Oh yeah, inFamous is finished. But it's so fun I'm playing again on an evil run. About halfway through that, but you can officially cross it off. I just might end up with a platinum trophy before the month is up too.

I'm working toward that too, but I've finally gotten into BioShock 2. I'm almost done with Pauper's Drop; it's certainly a solid experience so far.

I've made some solid headway in the Witcher (about the 8th time I've started it). Now I keep getting random blue screens in the swamps. This could put a crimp in what looked like my best chance to finish it.

Turn off auto saves if they're on, and restart the game every hour or so. That "fixed" the random crashes for me.

Oooh, that's a recipe for disaster for me. I lose an hour of play because I forgot to save and then wipe on a fight, I might not come back at all. I'll give it a shot for the swamp stuff. I didn't crash anywhere else, which is pretty weird.

Heh - I'm obsessive about quick saving in games like this. Develop that compulsion/reflex/personality defect and you'll be fine!

And Marvel Ultimate Alliance is down. Shorter than I remember it being but quite fun. I skipped a couple of sidequests though so in the process of winning managed to - at some unspecified point in the future...

Spoiler:

condemn Professor X to death at the hands of Mystique, let the Western seaboard of the US get destroyed by a rogue asteroid and put Odin in a huff so he didn't help when a big dude turns up to enslave the whole of humanity for a considerable length of time.

OOPS!

I could probably go back and fix some of that by replaying missions but...nah. I'm calling this one done.

Funnily enough, it also goes about setting up what appears to be a plot thread to go forward into any sequel...which got completely ignored for MUA2 in favour of the Civil War stuff.

Definitely better than the second game though, even though the plot is bonkers.

Put me up for Shadow of the Colossus (August, maybe) Persona 3: FES next month, please!

There's a new thread created each month. I'll try to get this one on there, but I'm not going to promise it. The best bet it to post in the new thread on July 1st.

Gotcha Force is done. I honestly thought i might not get to it, but I say down to it for a couple hours tonight and knocked it out. I was left feeling a bit burnt out on the whole mech in an arena thing, which Custom Robo managed to keep enjoyable, despite being a couple steps too complex for my tastes. A happy middle ground between Gotcha Force and Custom Robo might be quite a good game. Just so long as the camera isn't {ableist slur} like in Gotcha Force, where it has to alwas center on your 'target' so if it's a big something in the sky right overhead, you have no idea what's going on around you while you're fighting 3 enemies. The voices and beat you over the head about how it's for kids presentation definitely need to be skipped as much as possible. Sadly, the voices can only drop to about 30% maximum volum. Otherwise I liked the game quite a bit.

Evidently you get all kinds of new borgs when playing through 2-8 new times. I don't think i could bring myself to do such a thing.

I finally finished Chrono Trigger on the DS last night. I didn't play it back in the SNES days but this game was pretty fun. I am not sure if I am going to go back and replay it again for all of the other endings as my backlog is still pretty long. Has anyone else gone back to replay this game? Are the other endings worth the replay?

The wife and I finished up Lego Indiana Jones 2 last night.

Despite some of the improvements the game made over the original - especially the "tear away split screen", we felt that it was the weaker of the two games. The hub system that replaced the strong plot-driven game play makes for less focused play sessions, and thus less overall enjoyment. We would have much preferred the sequel to have unfolded like the first game instead of trying to be an open world.

Yeah I found Indy 2 to be disappointing. Felt like they had to cobble a lot of filler around the levels based on the 4th film in order to make it a complete package.

...which of course is entirely theoretical since THERE NEVER WAS A FOURTH MOVIE. IT DOES NOT EXIST.

Ahem.

Anyway, at least they learned their lessons going forward. The more recent games are significantly better.

Call it another failed month -- I'm stuck on

Spoiler:

Balduran's boat, fighting those damned werewolves in

Baldur's Gate. July, damn it.

Have stalled on Twilight Princess, having hit the eight hour mark where I often just wander away from games. Must...find...willpower...

I'm about an hour from the end of Fable III. I might not have finished it in June, but I came close.

As for Puzzle Quest 2, it's still cranking along. Honestly, it's become a bit of a drag. Everything just feels so padded out. Get an item on the other side of this door, but before you can go through it, go find these three objects scattered throughout the dungeon. Now that you've found those, go back to the door, get the item on the other side, then venture into the town, then go back into the dungeon, then go to the other side of the dungeon, then fight three of the same enemies scattered throughout the dungeon. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I have to confess that the game is from late 2006 and I played it back then. But I have finished another time Might Magic Dark Messiah and enjoyed it at lot, it is on sale now also so I recommend this to anyone for some fps fantasy/medieval combat.

Well, I failed to complete Jericho, again. Have had very little time to actually play after I completed Mother 3... I didn't even write my impression of that game's ending in the appropriate thread!

Must carry over, as usual.

Events conspired against me. The Witcher is not finished.

July where's the new thread?
