FF2010: GWJFFL Week 16 (and beyond)

It's invite only. Where's my invite?

Edit: Oh wait, it was sitting there right in my friends list. Silly me. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Yeah, if you didn't get an invite, you're probably not on my friends list. Friend me up.

I think I got an invite and I thought I hit accept but maybe not...

Lost the consolation championship by 1.5 points! Ouch, damn you Vick!

A post-season sweep (well, in the 3 in which I made the final game anyway). Woot!

I'll admit, I'm not too sad about losing the championship game, after starting 2-6, just making it was a proud enough performance for me.

Good Game, Damnsammit! See you in GWJFFL1 next year....

Grumps, thanks again for running a tight league!

Posted in the wrong thread. I'm usually reading the NFL thread and FFL thread at the same time.

Thanks for running things and good idea about the Steam group. Now you can more easily harass people if they don't show up promptly next August. And you can probably see who's online or not, and who's abandoning their teams...

Although I am happy to have won the championship in GWJFFL2 this year, I ended up losing in the first round of my other two (money) leagues by a combined total of 3.7 points.

Oh well, better luck next year in that regards!

And GWJFFL1, get ready for some Cowboys (next year, of course)!

Well, I had fun with you guys this year. So much so I don't think I'm going to join my non-GWJ league again, even though that league is a group of friends from the "real" world. The admins let in a couple people who ended up just smack talking to whole time and I don't have the patience for that crap anymore.

I gotta say the keeper league was interesting and I'm really looking forward to the draft for that league next year. Should be interesting.

I'm drafting all Cowboy players, btw.

I'm just going to try to talk my friends into implementing some of the GWJ rules.

PPR alone will help a ton.

Congratulations to...

So, would you say your boom/bust strategy worked as you kept your amazing players and did some smart waiver wire work switching out the later $1 drafted players?

That's actually pretty incredible. Mine was

Added 3
Drafted 10
Claimed 7

I made some not-so-smart moves (in the 20/20 perspective of hind sight) like hanging on to Stafford the whole year (he played 3 games, two really good ones, but still...) and reaching for some questionable players in the middle of the season hoping they would pan out. Also, losing Frank Gore and not bidding enough for Westbrook to replace him killed me in the end. This is the saddest thing (aside from finishing #2):

Waiver Budget $12

That $12 saved is helping me a lot now, isn't it?

Still, I think I got the best value in the league:

19.5 (221st overall) Nightmare's Heavies Peyton Hillis RB CLE

That dude was a *beast* this year.

Yeah, I saw this when checking out your team yesterday- quite frankly, I've never seen anything like it. Other than Peyton Hillis, it looked like you snagged every free agent of note in the league. It'll sure be interesting to see what you do with the team next year.

Honestly, what I found more interesting was the fact that the Minaseans and the Golden Jews managed to win the whole shebang with nearly their entire team as they drafted it.

As for my team, my championship starters were:

My other two players that made it the full season: Andre Johnson ($52 stud) and Randy Moss ($42 bust)

In a bit of a "year in review" here's a little summary of the 16 weeks of Team Grump. Yes, I know this is probably of no interest to anyone but me.

  • Week 1 - Result: W 132.1 to 109.55; Studs: A. Foster 42.8
  • Week 2 - Result: W 150.9 to 91.7; Studs: M. Vick 25.9, A. Johnson 33.8; Notes: Vick was claimed for $26 in week 2
  • Week 3 - Result: L 113.15 to 146.35; Studs: M. Vick 35.55; Notes: Moss has his season high 18.2 in week 3 right before imploding in week 4
  • Week 4 - Result: L 125.05 to 128.15; Studs: A. Foster 33.7, B. Lloyd 22.5; Notes: Vick got hurt and turned in 4.15 points; R. Moss played and turned in 0 and was traded to MIN
  • Week 5 - Result: L 97 to 130.15; Studs: No one over 20 points; Notes: Garrard led the team with 19.8; R. Moss got his season-high 18.1; Mark Clayton, who I claimed in week 2 for $11 turned in 1.6 points before suffering a season-ending injury
  • Week 6 - Result: L 123.55 to 128.65; Studs: J. Flacco 22.75, A. Foster 27.7, A. Johnson 27.8; Notes: Despite have the most players over 20 points so far, I lost by about 5 points thans to goose-eggs from E. Graham (claimed in week 6 for $0; left in Q2 - hamstring) and V. Shiancoe (drafted; played but not targeted once)
  • Week 7 - Result: L 102.8 to 118.15; Studs: J. Flacco 23.4; Notes: Left Stevie Johnson and his 29.8 points on the bench, mostly because he was playing the Ravens
  • Week 8 - Result: W 187.2 to 115.55; Studs: D. Garrard 34.2, A. Foster 31.7, L. Blount 25.9, B. Lloyd 29.9, L. Fitzgerald 25.2, A. Johnson 23.6; Notes: With Flacco and Vick on a BYE, it was a good time for Garrard to turn in his season high; R. Moss gets 1.8 points, gets traded to TEN and turns in 4 goose-eggs and 3 performances under 6 points in his last 7 games
  • Week 9 - Result: W 170.9 to 151.25; Studs: M. Vick 28.3, A. Foster 35.7, S. Johnson 25.5, S. Ajirotutu 27.1; Notes: Claimed Ajirotutu for $0, cut him and added him again all in week 9, this was his only game over 8 points all season including 10 goose-eggs;
  • Week 10 - Result: W 185.15 to 97.45; Studs: M. Vick 52.65, A. Johnson 29.6, B. Lloyd 27; Notes: Guess who's back? Back again? Yes, those 3 players alone outscored my opponent
  • Week 11 - Result: W 171.7 to 143.35; Studs: M. Vick 23.3, A. Foster 31.3, S. Johnson 39.7, L. Fitzgerald 21; Notes: Stevie Johnson's season high
  • Week 12 - Result: W 161.25 to 114.65; Studs: M. Vick 28.05, A. Foster 30.8, A. Johnson 20.6, B. Lloyd 23.6; Notes: D. Akers turned in a season high 16.7
  • Week 13 - Result: W 152.1 to 131.9; Studs: M. Vick 32.9, A. Foster 24.9, C. Ivory 23.7, A. Johnson 21.9; Notes: Added C. Ivory in week 3 (and again in week 4) and he finally turns in a 20+ point game... right before injuring his hamstring the following week
  • Week 14 - Result: W 134.7 to 121.85; Studs: M. Vick 27.1, A. Johnson 35; Notes: Playoffs!
  • Week 15 - Result: W 183.9 to 129.15; Studs: M. Vick 42.1, L. Fitzgerald 21.5; Notes: 5 players over 15 points but below 20
  • Week 16 - Result: W 118.35 to 86.65; Studs: M. Vick 26.45, A. Foster 23.5; Notes: Lowest point total since week 7 - the last time we lost - but my opponent had 9 goose-eggs on his roster (mostly on the bench, of course)

Other notes:

  • The two highest scorers in GWJFFL this year were Arian Foster (360.8) and Michael Vick (349.5 but also the highest per-game average of 29.1) and I was lucky enough to have them on my team.
  • Although I drafted with a focus on WR, two of my top three WRs (Brandon Lloyd, #2 overall WR; Andre Johnson, #7; Stevie Johnson, #9) were free agent pick-ups. Since I mostly ran 4-wide, I should note that the fourth-best on my team, Larry Fitzgerald (#17) was drafted.
  • My #2 RB changed every week until I picked up LeGarrette Blount for $4 in week 8
  • Kickers may be "worthless" but 3 of the top 10 finished the season as free agents

My Draft:

  • 15 Andre Johnson, Hou WR $52
  • 24 Randy Moss, NE WR $42
  • 16 Larry Fitzgerald, Ari WR $36
  • 14 Arian Foster, Hou RB $23
  • 53 T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Sea WR $11
  • 26 Justin Forsett, Sea RB $9
  • 1 Fred Taylor, NE RB $5
  • 49 Visanthe Shiancoe, Min TE $5
  • 8 Nate Kaeding, SD K $3
  • 80 Ravens D/ST, Bal D/ST $3
  • 68 David Akers, Phi K $2
  • 145 Jason Campbell, Oak QB $1
  • 157 Matt Cassel, KC QB $1
  • 191 Joey Galloway, Was WR $1
  • 207 Josh Morgan, SF WR $1
  • 213 Correll Buckhalter, Den RB $1
  • 219 Earl Bennett, Chi WR $1
  • 224 Josh Cribbs, Cle WR $1
  • 229 Mike Bell, Phi RB $1
  • 233 Javon Ringer, Ten RB $1

So as you can see, I had plenty of dead weight available for replacement. The season would had obviously been very different without the Vick acquisition since I basically had no QB (though Cassel did eventually get better after I cut him).

I still think it funny you determined Joey Galloway was worth $1.

He was a starting WR with McNabb throwing to him...

What a great season - I knew I had a killer draft in GWJFFL1, so the add/drop statistic didn't surprise me. Knowing my FF luck, I will probably be in the basement next year.

My GWJFFLK finish at #2 was the real stunner, though. I wasn't even planning on competing this year, just hoping I scored some good long-term players while my high priced free-agents (Ray Rice, Antonio Gates) let me sneak into the playoffs. I drafted 4 mediocre QBs hoping that one of them hit, and one did (Orton), though with Tebow on the horizon I'm a little worried about my long-term QB situation.

Good. Development didn't seem to be going anywhere fast under AOL.

Yeah I got the e-mail the other day.

Since I no longer have to worry about #11/#12 teams winning immunity, I'm amending my declaration now before I forget to do it next year. Effective beginning next post-season...

Relegation: Relegation will be determined by comparing post-season performance of the bottom two teams up for consideration. For example, beginning with #11 and #12, if the #12 team makes it to the semi-finals while the #11 team gets knocked out in the first round, the #11 team will be relegated. If a second team needs to be relegated, the post-season results of the remaining two lowest-ranked teams will be considered. Ties will be broken by relegating the lower-ranked team. For example, if both #10 and #12 lost in the semi-finals, #12 will be relegated, but if #10 lost in the semi-finals and #12 made it to the final round, the #10 team would be relegated. Obviously, the team that wins the consolation tournament is effectively granted immunity from relegation since no other team performed better than it did. You can not be relegated out of GWJFFL. In other words, there is no relegation for the "lowest-ranked" division of GWJFFL.

IF the new rules were effective this year, what would be the impact?
GWJFFL1: Potentially significant. #11 and #12 are playing in the "3rd place" game of the consolation tournament this week. The loser would be the first to be relegated, even if it's the #11 team. If a second team needed to be relegated, we'd compare the #12 and the #10 team. Since the #10 team got knocked out in the first round, they would be relegated instead of #12.
GWJFFL2: None. Both #11 and #12 were knocked out in the first round.

Again, these are not the rules with which we began the post-season and so I will not enact them until after next year since I don't think it would be fair to "change the game" at this late a stage. The rules for next season's promotion and relegation remain the same as declared in the week 14 thread.
